The Graveyard Girls Summary: A Gripping Serial Killer Thriller
TL;DR: A Burning Town and a Body in the Dirt
Beneath Brambletown, Georgia, an underground coal fire has burned for years, leaving a scorched stretch of land the locals call No Man’s Land.
Nothing grows there, and the ground stays hot enough to speed the decay of anything buried in it.
That is where human bones surface in Rita Herron’s The Graveyard Girls, the eleventh book in the Detective Ellie Reeves series.
Detective Ellie Reeves and park ranger Cord McClain are dispatched to identify the remains, while a town still haunted by a teenager’s disappearance fifteen years earlier watches every move.
The case soon points to a pattern of missing girls across North Georgia, each linked by red scarves and red shoes.
What follows is a five-day investigation into a small town’s buried history.

Spoiler warning: the following section covers the plot, the killer’s identity, and the ending. Fifteen years after high school valedictorian Ruth Higgins vanished, a burn-scarred wildlife photographer named Emanuel Black finds bones protruding from dry earth near Green Gardens Cemetery. Detective Ellie Reeves and Georgia State Park Ranger Cord McClain arrive from nearby Crooked Creek to assist Sheriff Clint Wallace, who resents outside law enforcement. Medical examiner Dr. Laney Whitefeather confirms the victim was a teenage girl, strangled with a red scarf and buried barefoot. The discovery draws Ruth’s estranged younger sister Tilly Higgins back to Brambletown from Atlanta. DNA and dental records identify the remains as Bonnie Sylvester, a thirteen-year-old foster child who disappeared three months earlier from Cleveland, Georgia. FBI Special Agent Derrick Fox joins the team with a murder board of unsolved North Georgia cases. Every case shares the same details: a red scarf, no shoes on the body, and one red shoe missing. Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Kat Jones finds her mother Ida’s old “shadow journal” on a laptop. The entries reveal that Ida and her cousin Hetty once saw Ida’s abusive father, graveyard caretaker Earl Bramble, dragging a body into No Man’s Land. Ruth Higgins had nicknamed the two girls “The Graveyard Girls.” In Athens, sixteen-year-old runaway Jacey Ward is lured into a black pickup truck outside a convenience store. Hours later, Cord finds her freshly strangled body in a ravine near the cemetery, alongside one red cowboy boot. Ellie and Derrick search an abandoned farm in Ballground and find a locked wardrobe holding multiple red scarves and eight pairs of red shoes. That same day, a vehicle deliberately rams Tilly and her brother Hayden off the road. Kat and several teenagers later sneak into No Man’s Land and uncover a buried skull, a shovel, and a hat belonging to her grandfather, Earl Bramble. Kat makes an anonymous tip call, and Ellie’s team excavates the grave. The skull is confirmed as Earl Bramble, dead fifteen years from blunt force trauma, which rules him out as the active killer. Cord’s fingerprints are found on the shovel, and Agent Fox handcuffs him for questioning. At the same time, Kat’s best friend Carrie Ann Parker disappears after her car tire is punctured on purpose. Forensic testing on the killer’s truck and the trophy collection matches DNA and prints to Joe Jones — Ida’s husband, Kat’s father, and a delivery driver for the “Ten Below” store chain. Under questioning, Ida admits she struck her father Earl with a shovel fifteen years ago to stop him from killing Hetty. Teenage Cord witnessed the aftermath and helped hide the death to protect the girls. Ida and Hetty had always assumed Earl killed Ruth Higgins. In truth, Ida’s boyfriend Joe was the predator all along. As an abused child, Joe fixated on his own mother’s red shoes. The obsession grew into a compulsion to murder young girls and keep their footwear. Ellie and Derrick track Joe to his childhood home on Bush Road, where he has thrown Carrie Ann into a murky pond to drown. Ellie dives in, pulls the girl out, and performs CPR until she revives. Derrick corners Joe in the woods and arrests him at gunpoint. In exchange for dropping the death penalty, Joe confesses to the full string of murders and shows where he buried his mother, Ruth Higgins, and the other victims. The District Attorney declines to charge Ida, Hetty, or Cord, citing self-defense and extenuating circumstances. Cord finally tells Ellie about his past, and the two reconcile.
