I Must Betray You Summary: A Descent into Surveillance

Warning: This section contains major spoilers, including the ending.

Cristian Florescu lives a double life. By day, he is a high school student. By night, he listens to illegal Radio Free Europe broadcasts. He yearns for freedom. His grandfather, Bunu, encourages him to think independently.

This makes Bunu a target. Cristian’s world shatters when he trades a stamp for a US dollar. This is a crime. A Securitate agent, nicknamed “Paddle Hands,” catches him.

The agent makes an offer. Cristian becomes an informer, codename “OSCAR.” In exchange, the state will provide medicine for Bunu, who is dying. Cristian agrees. His task is to report on Dan Van Dorn.

Cristian tries to be a bad spy. He reports only public facts. He tells the police about Dan’s music taste or his clothes. He withholds all private information.

Around this time, Cristian grows closer to a classmate, Liliana Pavel. They share a rare Coca-Cola. They dream of the West. However, the system poisons their connection. Liliana shares a family secret.

Soon after, the secret police interrogate her father. Liliana concludes Cristian is a traitor. She leaves him a note calling him a liar. Ruta Sepetys shows how surveillance destroys ordinary love.

Then, Bunu dies. His body is broken. Cristian discovers the truth. Bunu was poisoned with radiation by the Securitate. His “leukemia” was a lie. The final blow comes from a beating.

Cristian is consumed by rage. He decides to fight back. He writes a manuscript exposing the regime’s crimes. He titles it *Screaming Whispers*.

When the Van Dorns prepare to leave Romania, Cristian acts. He hides his manuscript on the diplomat’s desk. It is a desperate gamble. If caught, he is dead. If it works, the world will see. The action costs him dearly. The Securitate suspects him. They tail him constantly.

History intervenes. In December 1989, protests erupt in Timișoara.

The unrest reaches Bucharest. Cristian and his friend Luca join the crowds in Palace Square. The army opens fire.

Luca is shot. Cristian is beaten and arrested. He is taken to a prison. There, he sees Liliana again. She has also been arrested. In the chaos, she helps him escape. Cristian runs into the streets just as the military switches sides.

The revolution succeeds. The Ceaușescus flee and are executed. Cristian finds Luca alive, though he has lost an arm. Liliana is freed. But the cost is high. Cristian’s sister, Cici, is found dead. She was shot during the fighting. Cristian survives and eventually marries Liliana.

More than twenty years later, Cristian opens the secret archives. The author, Ruta Sepetys, delivers the final blows of truth.

He discovers his mother, Mioara, was an informer. She reported on her own family out of fear. He also learns Cici was a double agent. Cici had arranged his initial blackmail.

She did it to help the Americans and secure passports for the family.

The book ends with Cristian standing before Agent Paddle Hands. He is ready for one final confrontation.
