Spoiler warning: This section reveals major plot points, including the ending.

In March 2024, Margot Cooper’s life as the wife of A-list actor Jack Cooper collapses in a single news cycle. Ten young women go public with explicit messages and photos proving Jack’s serial harassment.

Margot’s upcoming lifestyle book, The View from Here, is shelved as the scandal explodes.

Margot flees Montecito with her sixteen-year-old daughter, Skye, and heads to her childhood home in Pittsburgh. Her sister Julia, an investigative journalist, welcomes them.

While exploring their late parents’ attic, Skye finds a box containing 1977 New York tabloids, Orbit Room nightclub pay stubs made out to their mother, Ginger Daughtry, and a newspaper headline reading “Is This Lady X?”

The discovery sends Margot and Julia digging into their mother’s hidden past. They contact former senator Vanessa Purdy, who points them toward her old ghostwriter, Rachel Horowitz.

In April 1977, twenty-year-old Ginger Daughtry arrives in New York City from Allentown with dreams of becoming a dancer. She takes in two roommates: Rachel Horowitz, a feminist writer disowned by her family for being gay, and Faye Bouchard, a French-Canadian woman fleeing an abusive forced marriage.

Ginger gets a job at the legendary Orbit Room nightclub, where she later helps Faye get hired despite the manager’s predatory behavior.

After Rachel is raped by bookstore owner Dennis LeRoy in May 1977, the three women try to report the crime. NYPD Officer Sherman Boyle dismisses Rachel, mocks her, and threatens all three.

Realizing the system will not protect them, Faye and Rachel decide to strike back. Joined by Ginger, they vandalize LeRoy’s bookstore with the words “RAPIST” and “LIAR,” signing the act “Lady X.”

The vandalism becomes a citywide sensation. When Officer Boyle continues stalking and harassing the roommates, they retaliate by painting his police cruiser and signing “Lady X” again.

The stakes escalate when the roommates help their coworker Jasmine escape her abusive boyfriend, Mets pitcher Carl Fitz. Carl attacks Ginger, and Faye smashes his hand with a hammer, ending his career.

Fearing arrest, the women send Ginger to Pittsburgh to hide. There she meets Peter Evans, a kind Vietnam veteran. But Ginger returns to New York on July 13, 1977, just as the infamous citywide blackout hits.

Officer Boyle corners Ginger in their apartment building and chokes her. Faye bites his arm, and with a push from Ginger, Boyle falls five stories to his death. The blackout chaos leads police to rule the death accidental. Ginger calls Peter, leaves New York forever, marries him, and buries her past in an attic box.

In 2024, Margot faces her own battles. She discovers Skye was being harassed by a classmate who tried to extort explicit photos. When the school dismisses her claims, Margot withdraws Skye and threatens an expose. Returning to California, she finds Jack and her manager Noelle have secretly aligned against her.

After Jack tries to force a fake TV reconciliation, Margot smashes her living room with a baseball bat. Jack uses footage of her breakdown to blackmail her into appearing on the Today show.

Margot, Julia, and Skye travel to New Jersey and Brooklyn, meeting Rachel Horowitz and Faye Bouchard. Faye and attorney Todd Ackerman reveal the full truth: Lady X was a collective movement born from Ginger, Faye, and Rachel. Ginger sacrificed her dancing dreams to protect her friends and build a family.

On live television, Margot appears alongside Jack but refuses his script. She publicly announces her divorce, exposes his coercion, tells him to “fuck yourself” on air, and walks off set.

One year later, Margot lives in a Brooklyn brownstone and works as an executive producer funding media about women’s resilience.

She visits Ginger at a memory care facility with Julia, Skye, Faye, and Rachel. Though Ginger’s memory is fading, she recognizes her old roommates, and the three original Lady X women embrace.
