Lights Out Book Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. The following covers the major events and the ending.

Lights Out opens in the dark. Kate Green wakes inside the trunk of a moving car, bleeding and struggling to breathe. The book then rewinds to explain how she got there.

Kate is a retired Olympic soccer player working as a national sports reporter for TRP Sports Television. During a post-game interview, New York Comets point guard Mason Burke insults her parenting. A camera malfunction means his provocation is never recorded.

A bystander’s video of Kate’s profane response goes viral anyway. The network suspends her, and her public humiliation becomes national content.

The Murder on North Street

Kate is helping her best friend Yvette Robbins decorate a school gym for a Halloween dance when sirens flood the town. A neighbor calls Yvette: emergency vehicles are surrounding her gated estate.

Kate drives her home. Lead detective Peter Bernard, a former NYPD officer new to Greenwich, tells Yvette that her husband, Comets superstar Kurt Robbins, has been shot dead in their kitchen.

Bernard interrogates Yvette for hours and treats her as the primary suspect. Kate tells her friend to stay silent and hire a defense attorney.

With the mansion cordoned off, Yvette and her teenage daughter Dylan move into Kate’s Victorian home on Fern Street. Kate begins investigating on her own.

Money, Motives, and a Burner Phone

Fifty thousand dollars in cash is missing from Kurt’s bedroom safe, but Yvette’s far more expensive jewelry is untouched. Kurt’s diamond studs and gold chain are also gone from his body.

Yvette admits she returned to the house on the afternoon of the murder to smooth over an argument. That leaves a twenty-minute gap in her timeline.

A diner waitress named Jo reports that Kurt had a explosive argument with head coach Sebastian Bradshaw hours before his death. Detective Bernard never followed up on her calls.

Kurt’s younger brother Gene is arrested for larceny and obstruction. Unopened foreclosure notices show he defaulted on a million dollars in gym mortgages Kurt had already paid off.

Kate also finds a secret burner phone in Kurt’s life. At Madison Square Garden she sees her colleague David Lopez arguing with Mia Mars, a social media assistant for the Comets.

Inside Mia’s office, Kate finds a Polaroid of Kurt and Mia together in front of Yvette’s Picasso lithograph — taken inside Yvette’s own house. She also finds Mia’s discarded ultrasound.

The Family Circle Tightens

Kate’s estranged biological father, legendary NYPD homicide detective Liam Murphy, resurfaces to assist the Greenwich investigation. A DNA warrant confirms that Mia’s unborn child is Kurt’s.

Kate’s son Jackson, recovering from a near-fatal Adderall overdose, admits that Dylan supplied him with pills obtained through her boyfriend Zeke. Dylan had searched Jackson’s room after the murder for her hidden stash.

Kate’s ex-husband Tyler, an investment manager who handles Kurt’s funds, was on a call with Kurt at 2:01 p.m. on the day of the murder. Kurt left a voicemail saying he had changed his mind about withdrawing ten million dollars for a “love nest.”

Tyler concealed the voicemail because his alibi at 2:22 p.m. was a motel meeting with town realtor Christie Orlow, with whom he was having an affair.

At Kurt’s televised funeral, tabloid reporter Cal Callahan publishes an article in which Mia claims Kurt loved her and planned to leave Yvette the day he died.

Vandalism and Escalation

Vandalism spreads through town. At Greenwich Lake School, a photo of Dylan is defaced with red paint and the words “Beware Dylan—you are next.”

Kate’s house is egged and her lawn decorations are decapitated. Spray paint on her oak tree warns Tyler to stay away.

Police arrest Zeke and Christie’s stepdaughter Madison, who admit to the vandalism after discovering Christie’s affair with Tyler.

The Path Through the Woods

Christie tells Kate she rented a house on Chester Street to a tall woman with a deep velvet voice — Mia Mars’s older sister, Heather. The property sits directly behind the woods bordering the Robbins estate.

At dusk, Kate walks into the pine forest behind the rental and finds a hidden footpath leading to a loose iron fence behind Kurt’s tennis court. Near the gap she finds a piece of a zebra-patterned high heel.

Hidden in the shadows, Kate overhears Mia and Heather loading a suitcase into a car. She records them on her phone.

Mia confesses on tape that she shot Kurt. When he canceled the house purchase and refused to leave Yvette, she walked through the woods with his own gun and shot him when he laughed at her.

Mia and Heather spot Kate. Heather reverses the car into her, fracturing Kate’s ribs and rupturing her spleen, then dumps her unconscious body into the trunk.

Christie, unable to reach Kate by phone, had guessed where she went and called the police. Officers intercept the vehicle and open the trunk.

How Lights Out Ends

Mia Mars is arrested for murder and Heather cooperates with the state. Kate’s recording becomes the decisive evidence that convicts Mia and clears Yvette of the shooting.

TRP offers Kate her job back with elevated status, restoring her professional reputation.

Recovering in her hospital suite, Kate confronts Yvette about the zebra-patterned heel found at the fence. Yvette confesses that she returned through the woods that afternoon to check whether Kurt was with his mistress.

She found Kurt on the kitchen floor, bleeding from Mia’s gunshot. He raised his hand and begged her to call 911. Furious that he had broken his promise never to leave her, Yvette looked at him and walked away.

She let him bleed to death so she could emerge as a wealthy widow rather than a humiliated ex-wife.

Kate decides not to report her. Doing so would tell Dylan that her mother allowed her father to die.

Kate reconciles with Liam and accepts her aptitude for investigative work, leaving the suburban version of her life behind.
