Murder at 30,000 Feet Summary: Spoilers Ahead

The novel opens at San Diego International Airport, where Pioneer Air Flight 868 to San Juan is delayed for hours.

Among the waiting passengers are Francesca Kessler, a grieving mother chaperoning the Crestwood High baseball team, and Coach Brendan “Cal” Callahan, who carries a secret about her son’s death.

Three years earlier, Francesca’s fifteen-year-old son Matthew was killed by a hit-and-run driver.

Coach Cal saw the vehicle, a Ford Bronco belonging to former player Billy Wilcox, but Sheriff Alan Eckles and Booster Club president Penelope Abernathy pressured him into silence to protect star athlete Trey Turnberry.

Billy Wilcox is on the flight heading to his destination wedding, joined by his fiancée Jillian Azarian and maid of honor Angie Diaz. A week before the trip, Billy assaulted Angie. Right before boarding, she files a police report and shows Jillian a recording of the assault.

Undercover Federal Air Marshal Carlos Renaldo is also aboard, distracted after flight attendant Katie MacIntosh abruptly ended their relationship. Flight attendant Cathy Yap, Cal’s ex-wife, confronts him during the flight and then tells Francesca that Cal witnessed the car that killed Matthew.

At cruising altitude, Captain Brett Bancroft flies into an unexpected wall of thunderstorms. A lightning strike shorts the avionics and plunges the cabin into darkness for two full minutes. When the lights return, player Kai Rivers finds Billy Wilcox dead on the lavatory floor, his face beaten with a collector’s bat signed by Trey Turnberry.

Carlos secures the scene and keeps the murder quiet to avoid panic. On the ground, FBI Special Agent Sam Cooper investigates the Crestwood hit-and-run and Angie’s report, discovering that Billy’s Bronco had tire treads matching the marks from the night Matthew died.

A second crisis unfolds when the FBI orders the plane to divert to Jacksonville. First Officer Drew Ridley, part of a drug-and-cash smuggling ring with Katie, panics. He opens the fuel valves to force the plane onward but dumps the entire reserve, causing a double engine failure at 30,000 feet.

Captain Bancroft glides the powerless A330 through the storm and lands on Martini Cay, a tiny 2,820-foot strip in Turks and Caicos. The plane overshoots, plows through sand, and stops in shallow water. All passengers survive and take shelter in an abandoned hangar.

Francesca unknowingly carries the Samsonite suitcase holding nearly three million dollars in cartel cash. Its GPS tracker leads two armed hitmen to the island. They shoot Ridley in the knee and Cal in the chest before Carlos and Marco Reyes, an undercover DEA agent, kill both attackers.

Bancroft flies the wounded coach to a hospital in Cockburn Town. Back in the hangar, Carlos spots bloodstains on Penelope Abernathy’s sleeve and confronts her. She is the killer: Billy had confessed the cover-up to Jillian, and Penelope silenced him during the blackout.

Survivors are rescued by the HMS Wilmington. Trey Turnberry is indicted for vehicular manslaughter, Eckles pleads guilty to obstruction, and Ridley and MacIntosh are arrested for trafficking. Penelope is charged with first-degree murder.

Francesca reunites with her husband Rick, and Carlos is recruited by the FBI.
