Elspeth Spindle lives in Blunder, a kingdom cut off from the world by a sentient mist created by the Spirit of the Wood. Eleven years earlier, she caught a magical fever and absorbed the spirit of the Nightmare Card.
The Nightmare lives inside her mind, granting her strength but speaking in cryptic rhymes while slowly growing stronger.
During the Equinox, Elspeth is attacked by masked highwaymen while returning from her father’s home. She fights them off using the Nightmare’s power. She later learns the highwaymen were Ravyn Yew, Captain of the Destriers, and his cousin Prince Elm.
Ravyn discovers Elspeth’s infection but offers a deal instead of arresting her. He belongs to a secret council collecting all twelve Providence Cards to lift the mist and cure the infection.
Their plan also aims to save Ravyn’s dying brother Emory from the King’s sacrificial ritual.
Elspeth joins the council under the cover of a fake courtship with Ravyn.
