Twisted Pawn Summary: The Deep Dive
Warning: Full spoilers ahead.
The novel opens at Chiesa di San Pietro Martire in Naples.
The Ferrante family is baptizing baby Gennaro, also called Nero. This is not a normal baptism.
Achilles Ferrante kills a rival clan’s underboss and uses his blood during the ceremony. Tierney Callaghan watches, disgusted. She is wearing a red minidress, deliberately out of place.
Achilles stares at her with open hatred. He calls her “Piccola Fiamma,” which means little flame. The nickname is not affectionate. It is a marker of their toxic history.
During the baptism, armed men attack the church. They throw flares and fire automatic weapons. Achilles shoves Tierney under a pew and gives her a gun. He promises to return for her.
She tries to crawl away when an explosion seems near. Achilles catches her, throws her across the room, and shields her body with his own. In that moment, he becomes physically aroused. Tierney resents this.
The attackers leave a headless corpse strapped to a black horse. The torso is sewn with explosives. Someone has declared war on the Ferrante family.
The narrative then shifts to the past. At fourteen, Tierney had recently arrived in America. She had survived a Siberian prison camp where she was tortured and raped. She spoke only Russian and some American Sign Language.
She self-harmed by picking at her skin until it bled. One night, a boy appeared in her room. It was Achilles. They could not understand each other’s language. Yet they formed an instant connection.
Tierney touched his cheek. Achilles flinched. It was the first time he had ever felt a loving touch. He stayed with her until morning. He began sneaking into her room to protect her from nightmares.
Back in the present, a week after the baptism, Achilles is in his apartment. The disemboweled body of Hamish Upton is nearby. Upton was a DJ who had slept with Tierney.
Achilles has been killing or maiming Tierney’s sexual partners. He once cut off Angelo Bandini’s fingers. He let Bandini live because killing the son of the Chicago Outfit’s boss would start a war.
Achilles believes no one is allowed to hurt Tierney except him. Luca, his older brother, arrives to find him covered in blood. Their father, Don Vello, is dying. The church attack has forced an emergency meeting.
Don Vello must name a successor. He had considered Achilles, but Achilles’s fixation on Tierney has become a liability. The story now centers on three questions: who attacked the church, what broke Achilles and Tierney apart, and can either escape the world that shaped them?
