Something in the Water Summary: The Complete Plot

SPOILERS AHEAD. This section recounts the entire story, including the ending.

In Something in the Water, Catherine Steadman introduces Erin Locke, a documentarian preparing a film about three prisoners before and after release: Holli Byford, Alexa Fuller, and Eddie Bishop.

Weeks before her wedding to investment banker Mark Roberts, Mark is fired after a colleague’s pricing error triggers a corporate cover-up.

Mark’s fear of financial collapse drives the couple to escape into their planned honeymoon in Bora Bora. After a storm, they take a boat to a remote dive site and find a locked black canvas duffel bag floating among waterlogged papers.

Back at their bungalow, they cut the bag open and find one million US dollars in cash, over a million pounds in diamonds, a handgun, a smartphone, and an encrypted USB stick.

They dive again and discover a crashed private Gulfstream jet on the seabed with five dead passengers.

Instead of reporting the crash, Erin and Mark decide to keep the fortune. Erin switches on the dead passenger’s phone and connects it to hotel Wi-Fi, which triggers a text exchange with a dangerous contact. The couple deletes hotel security footage, alters guest records, and smuggles the cash and diamonds back to London.

Once home, they set up a numbered Swiss bank account to launder the money. They learn that Daniel and Sally Sharpe, a British couple they met in Bora Bora, have drowned in a staged diving accident.

Mark admits he told resort staff the Sharpes had found the bag, a lie that led to the couple’s murders.

Pressure builds when counterterrorism detective DCI Andy Foster asks Erin about Holli Byford, who has skipped parole and fled to Syria.

Mark tries to sell the diamonds through an art dealer named Charles, but the dealer refuses because the stones lack provenance.

Erin turns to gangster Eddie Bishop in Pentonville Prison. She agrees to deliver a video message to his estranged daughter, Lottie, in exchange for Eddie selling the diamonds.

Lottie rejects her father, but Eddie keeps the deal and deposits two million pounds into Erin’s Swiss account.

Mark wants to burn the remaining phone and USB drive, but while he is away, Erin turns on the phone and finds a voicemail offering two million euros for the drive. She realizes Mark had already heard the voicemail and hidden the drive in a truffle box.

Erin arranges a trade in Norfolk and asks Eddie for protection.

A man named Patrick attacks her in her hotel room, knocks her unconscious, and steals her bag, phone, and gun. Erin escapes, runs to the woods, and discovers that Mark hired Patrick to rob her so Mark could complete the trade and flee to New York with the money.

During the exchange, the Russian buyer asks for the plane’s crash coordinates. Mark tries to bluff. When the Russian pulls a gun, Mark draws the stolen Glock, but the gun accidentally discharges.

The Russian shoots Mark twice, and Mark dies in the mud as Erin watches.

Following Eddie’s phone instructions, Erin buries Mark and Patrick in the forest, reports Mark missing, and constructs an alibi.

Weeks later on Christmas Eve, a heavily pregnant Erin watches news of a terrorist attack in London carried out by Holli Byford.

The novel ends with Erin alone, wealthy, and permanently changed.
