Check out our detailed chapter-by-chapter breakdown of Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston

The plot of Anatomy of an Alibi unfolds over a few days in October. It is narrated by several characters, primarily Camille Bayliss, Aubrey Price, and Hank Landry. The story also flashes back to events ten years prior.

Camille is married to Ben Bayliss, a powerful defense attorney in Baton Rouge. She is unhappy and wants out of the marriage. Her goal is to find evidence of Ben’s infidelity to trigger a clause in her prenuptial agreement.

While searching his things, she finds a bar napkin with Aubrey Price’s name and address on it.

Camille confronts Aubrey at her workplace, Doug’s Tavern. Aubrey is confused; she has never met Ben. But she recognizes the name of his hometown, Corbeau.

Aubrey’s parents were killed in a hit-and-run in Corbeau ten years earlier. Paul Granger, a local drug dealer, was convicted of the crime. Aubrey has always believed in his innocence.

Realizing Ben has a file on her, the two women form an alliance. They devise a plan to swap identities for a single day. This will give them both what they want: Camille can secretly spy on her husband, and Aubrey can investigate the past.

On Saturday, October 10, the plan goes into effect. Aubrey, in disguise as Camille, goes shopping in St. Francisville, creating a digital trail.

Camille sneaks back into her own home in Baton Rouge. She hides in the attic with cameras. Aubrey, however, goes off-script.

She uses the opportunity to visit Paul Granger in prison. Granger tells her he was framed. He says the former police chief, Kevin Foster, confessed before he died that a video exists proving his innocence.

Back in the attic, Camille makes her own shocking discoveries. She watches Ben meet with two men, who turn out to be Aubrey’s housemates.

They deliver a red Mustang. More importantly, she overhears a tense conversation between Ben and her sister-in-law, Margaret Everett.

Ben is furious. He says he covered for Silas, Camille’s brother, the night Silas killed Aubrey’s parents. Camille is devastated to learn her own brother is the killer she and Aubrey are hunting.

The situation explodes when Ben finds Camille retrieving her cameras. He destroys the evidence and threatens her. Camille flees the house and calls her brother in a panic.

That same evening, Ben is stabbed to death in his office. His custom hunting knife is the murder weapon.

The next day, Hank Landry, Ben’s law partner, finds the body. He removes Ben’s files to protect their clients. He discovers Ben was running a massive blackmail operation, manipulating cases for the rich and powerful. Detective Nathan Sullivan leads the murder investigation.

He seems focused on Hank and Camille.

But the case takes another turn when Ben’s missing knife is planted in Aubrey’s apartment. Her housemates hide it just before the police search the house.

Hank, meanwhile, begins his own investigation. He traces the evidence to a jewelry box belonging to Aubrey’s mother. Inside a secret compartment is a USB drive.

But before Aubrey can access it, a man named Frank steals it. Frank is a plant working for Silas Everett.

Silas and Camille watch the video. The final twist is revealed. Silas was not driving the truck that killed Aubrey’s parents. It was Margaret.

She let Silas believe he was the killer for ten years to control him. When Camille confronts Margaret, Margaret attacks her.

In the final confrontation, Detective Sullivan attacks Aubrey at her home. He admits he killed Ben. Sullivan was Foster’s corrupt nephew, and Ben was getting too close to the truth.

Aubrey’s housemate, Deacon, intervenes and kills Sullivan. Silas arrives and orchestrates a cover-up. They frame Sullivan as Ben’s murderer and the original hit-and-run driver. Aubrey agrees to keep the secret to protect Deacon.

In the resolution, Silas visits Aubrey. He tells her Paul Granger’s release is imminent. He also hints that Margaret has started drinking again.

He then receives a phone call: Margaret has died in a fatal car accident. Silas tells Aubrey it was the only justice possible. Aubrey understands that she and Deacon are now Silas’s alibi, trapping them in his web of secrets forever.
