Don’t Fall in Love With Me Summary: Full Story

SPOILER WARNING: This section reveals the complete plot, including the ending.

Three years before the main story, Gracie watches Jackson Cole marry Chloe. Heartbroken, she buries herself in a demanding London marketing job. On her twenty-seventh birthday, she receives a message from Jackson, who is divorcing Chloe and wants her help rebranding his family’s mineral water business in France.

Gracie resigns and travels to Sainte-Églantine-les-Bains, staying with her grandmother Mellie. She reunites with Jackson at Château Angèle, where their chemistry immediately returns. Jackson explains his marriage ended because Chloe refused to move to France and treated his family poorly.

While in town, Gracie encounters Étienne, a mechanic she met ten years earlier. At seventeen, she had stumbled upon his river cottage and they formed a deep friendship, but he vanished the following year. Now, Étienne is distant but agrees to fake-flirt with Gracie to make Jackson jealous.

Gracie discovers Étienne owns a garage Jackson’s mother Sandrine wants to buy. Through their interactions, Gracie learns Étienne’s mother Estelle died of ALS six months after they met, which is why he disappeared. His former girlfriend Eve also died of ALS, leaving him emotionally closed off.

Gracie proposes using Estelle’s art nouveau painting of Sainte Églantine for the brand, renaming it simply “Sainte.” Étienne gives permission for the artwork without asking for payment. As the rebrand progresses, Jackson admits he has always loved Gracie, but she realizes her feelings for him were rooted in unrequited angst rather than genuine love.

During a kayaking trip, Gracie and Étienne camp overnight and share their first real kiss. However, Étienne pulls back, wanting to keep things casual. Gracie decides to stay in France permanently and open her own freelance consultancy.

Étienne ends the relationship after learning of Jackson’s confession. When Gracie demands to know why he hates Jackson’s family, he asks if she truly doesn’t remember. Gracie recalls a buried memory from age seven: a bleeding boy begged Albert for help, but Sandrine dismissed him and drove him away.

Gracie confronts Étienne, who reveals the truth. Sébastien, Albert’s late son, was Étienne’s biological father. Sébastien and Estelle had a secret relationship.

When young Étienne sought Albert’s help, Sandrine lied to Estelle, calling her a gold digger to protect Jackson’s inheritance. Étienne is Albert’s grandson and Jackson’s cousin.

Jackson and Gracie find hidden love letters between Sébastien and Estelle in the château. Gracie brings them to Étienne, and they read them together. Sandrine apologizes but Jackson defends Étienne, telling his mother her cruelty denied him a cousin. Albert eventually embraces Étienne as his grandson.

The novel ends with the successful launch of Sainte mineral water. In the epilogue six and a half years later, Albert has passed away peacefully. Jackson is married to Sylvie with a son named Alfie. Gracie and Étienne live at the restored Les Saules with their daughter Elle.
