Wicked Onyx Summary: Debbie Cassidy’s Dark Academia

Wicked Onyx: A Cursed Bloodline at a Deadly Academy

Anamaya Onyx has spent her life hiding under a fake name in a slum town, watching her mother die slowly because no healer would treat an Onyx.

When a posthumous letter leads her to a hidden journal and a set of ancestral focus objects, she learns her family may have been framed for a crime a century old.

Wicked Onyx by Debbie Cassidy opens the Veritas Legacy series inside Nova Terra, a realm scarred by an event called The Overshadowing, where monsters and identity-stealing Echoes cross into the world.

Anamaya uses an obscure legal decree to force her way into Nightsbridge Academy, a walled stronghold that trains supernals to hunt those creatures.

What she wants is her bound magic back, and a book that could prove her bloodline innocent.

Readers of dark academia fantasy, paranormal romance, and romantasy with academy trials, cursed lineages, and slow-burn tension will find the premise familiar and fast-moving.

Those who prefer morally gray antagonists, found-family dynamics among outcasts, and heroines who fight with words as much as magic will find the tone matches their taste.

Wicked Onyx Summary (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: The following section covers the plot from beginning to end, including the final chapters.

The book opens with a prologue set six years before the main story. Selina Evergreen, a student at Nightsbridge Academy, is hunted outside her window by a hooded figure who breaks her wards, strangles her, and casts a memory-erasing spell.

Six years later, twenty-one-year-old Anamaya Denton lives in the slum town of Carlston under an assumed name. Her mother, Ariana Onyx, has just died after months of illness, unable to seek treatment without exposing the family identity.

Anamaya trades a captured sewer critter to a local caster named Bunty for a pain-relieving tincture. Bunty tests her blood, recognizes her as an Onyx, and tries to blackmail her instead of paying.

He refuses the tincture and calls her mother’s suffering karma. Anamaya releases the flesh-eating critter on him and leaves him to die.

Back at her cottage, a posthumous letter from her mother leads her to a hidden box beneath the bed. Inside are ancestral focus objects, including the ruby amulet of her great-great-grandaunt Dharma Onyx, and Dharma’s partially burned journal.

The journal contains an entry declaring “IT’S ALL A LIE” and claiming the Onyx family was framed for the extinction of the Blackthorne bloodline a century earlier. A hundred years before, the Arcanum Imperium bound the magic of every Onyx and cursed each generation of women.

Anamaya’s own curse removes both physical pain and physical pleasure. In the journal she finds a legal loophole: Timor Exstinctionis, a decree obligating the ruling council to protect endangered magical bloodlines so the Weave of magic stays stable.

She decides to invoke it, demand entry to Nightsbridge Academy, restore her magic, and locate the Libra Veritas, the Book of Truth, hidden in the academy vaults. On the tram to Nightsbridge, wards fail under attack by elemental Mudarks and face-stealing Echoes.

Hunter units led by Drayven Thorn, a barghest shifter, and Sterling Damascus, a dhampir vampire prince, arrive to save the passengers.

Anamaya already hates Sterling: six years earlier, after her childhood friend Annabeth Damascus burned to death when the atrium doors stuck shut, Sterling and his men executed her father in the street.

She is taken into Bramble Tower, treated by the halfling healer Darla, and meets Yash Vitra, Tower Master of the Unwoven and a rare naga shifter. When Vitra touches her shoulder, she feels genuine physical sensation for the first time in years.

Anamaya is housed among the Unwoven, students whose magic has been bound as punishment.

She forms close bonds with three of them: Clary Tavona, an Evergreen witch bound for refusing to heal an attacker; Dori Embercrest, an Embercrest witch bound for sharing restricted spells; and Benedict Ironhart, a sorcerer runt who wields volatile Chaos magic.

She stands trial before the Superna Coterie, the governing board of Walter Regent, Xander Crax, Portia Reign, Heidi Embercrest, Constance Selethis, and Yash Vitra. Portia Reign, Anamaya’s hostile step-aunt, demands her execution or expulsion.

Heidi Embercrest and Xander Crax vote to admit her under the Lex to preserve Weave balance, and Vitra becomes her official mentor.

Shortly after, in the dining hall, Anamaya witnesses Tamina Vayne, a Baobhan Sith, publicly beating her bonded hound Ruspin, a Therianthrope shifter trapped in beast form.

Anamaya catches the whip with her bare hands and challenges Tamina to a three-minute arena duel on Coral Isle. If she survives, Ruspin goes free; if she loses, she becomes Tamina’s pet for a week.

A jealous prima incantor named Viola later shoves Anamaya through a border portal into ratakan territory. She outruns the ratakan sentries until Drayven Thorn rescues her and carries her back.

Heidi Embercrest escorts Anamaya into the catacombs beneath Trinity Tower to meet the Weave Watchers, spectral guardians of the Weave. They call her “daughter of Ariana, blood of Dharma, the chosen betrayer,” test her resolve, and agree to unravel the block on her magic in stages.

During a later lunch in the main dining hall, a sea dragon crashes through the windows. Anamaya leaps onto its tail and punches it before Yash Vitra compels the beast back into the ocean with ancient commands.

In Combat 101, Sterling Damascus tries to humiliate her, forcing her into a hand-to-hand demonstration of the Hamlin maneuver and choking her until Drayven tackles him to the gravel. Anamaya later tells Drayven the full truth about Annabeth’s death and her father’s execution.

Drayven reveals his own history: Sterling’s father burned his packlands and killed his wife Brenna and his children. A childhood blood pact prevents Drayven and Sterling from killing each other directly.

The arena match takes place at The Devil Fish club on Coral Isle. Tamina uses Baobhan Sith mental compulsion to project dislocated joints, broken bones, and internal tearing into Anamaya’s mind.

Because Anamaya has lived in numbness for six years, the simulated pain makes her feel alive. She laughs through tears, holds her ground, and endures until the three-minute bell, winning Ruspin’s freedom. Tamina slashes her chest in a rage.

Drayven leaps into the cage, licks the wound, and carries her out. His saliva contains a clotting agent that also functions as a metaphysical mate mark, a ritual act of claiming, and he and Vitra clash over it.

Anamaya begins sleepwalking and seeing visions of a rook and a crying girl. In the library, she and her friends find the personal journal of Selina Evergreen, an Unwoven student.

The next morning, Clary, Dori, Benedict, and even Yash Vitra have no memory that Selina Evergreen ever existed. Anamaya realizes a massive memory-erasing spell covers the academy, and she is immune because she arrived after it was cast and sleeps in Selina’s old room.

During a midnight storm she sleepwalks to a garden pavilion, guided by Selina’s spirit. She digs up Selina’s preserved corpse beneath the floorboards and shatters a crystalline gem on its chest. The broken gem collapses the memory spell and restores Selina to everyone’s recollection.

The administration fast-tracks the Unwoven for the Combat Grading Exam outside the southern border wards. Anamaya joins a squad with Poppy, Bella, Bryce, a Therianthrope shifter, and Tyler Damascus, Sterling’s younger brother.

The exam collapses when wild Echoes and a Landwyrm, an ancient draconic Horror believed extinct, breach the outer wards. The Landwyrm’s gaze paralyzes the students, and Echoes possess Bryce.

Anamaya steps in front of the Landwyrm, raises her bare hands, and channels raw Weave energy outward. She holds the creature at bay until Drayven, Sterling, and the Hunters arrive to finish it.

Afterward, Drayven visits her room and admits his attraction to her. He explains they cannot be together because he is waiting for the blood pact with Sterling to weaken so he can kill him and honor his vow to Brenna. He says goodbye.

The novel closes at the Restoration Ceremony in Trinity Tower, where Heidi Embercrest leads the Unwoven around an enchanted glowing wheel. When Anamaya’s turn comes, Heidi unbinds the ancient spell on her bloodline.

As Weave power floods back into her, her physical curse shatters. For the first time in six years her nerves awaken, and Wicked Onyx ends with her screaming as pain returns.

In a final POV epilogue, Yash Vitra sends his snake familiar Purina across the realm with a secret message to an unknown master: “The sage spoke true. I believe the key is among us.”

Quotes from Wicked Onyx

“Karma was indeed a bitch, and some people deserved to die. My mother was not one of them.”

“I’d spent all my life among humans and supernals like Bunty and Carlisle—Arcanus without affiliation to any coven—skimming the outskirts of society while the magic users who I should have been able to count on for support pretended I didn’t exist.”

“You don’t belong here, and if it wasn’t my oath-given duty to save you, the stain of your bloodline would have been wiped from this world tonight.”

“There’s no such thing as friends for an Onyx. Friends betray and lie and pretend not to know you when others find out about the friendship.”

“Pain isn’t just housed in our bodies, sweetie… It’s also housed in our minds. Let me show you.”

“You can’t break me. I’m already broken, bitch.”

“Nightsbridge is filled with Horrors for us, but you’ve been surrounded by horrors all your life. Horrors that wear human faces.”

“The sage spoke true. I believe the key is among us.”
