Chad Zunker‘s In His Wake opens in Costa Rica, where a private team tracks a clean-shaven man named Dawson who faked his death.

In Austin, Texas, the Turkish assassin Yusuf Demir, known as the Caracal, fires a sniper shot from the Frost Bank Tower.

The bullet kills presidential candidate Senator Lowell Carson and wounds FBI Agent Nelson outside the Four Seasons Hotel.

Investigative journalist Dean Dawson arrives at the scene as his brother Eric Dawson, the FBI Special Agent in Charge, takes over the investigation.

Dean’s ex-girlfriend April North shares a photograph of text messages she found on her boss Edward Sullivan’s phone. The messages mention that Dawson has not broken and that Carson is no longer a problem.

Dean’s younger brother Ben discovers his six-figure student loan debt has been paid from a Cayman Islands account.

A distressed blond woman later visits Ben at his bar and asks whether his father is truly dead. The FBI also discovers that agent Lamar Barkley sold the motorcade order for fifteen thousand dollars and was then shot dead.

Dean travels to Midland and interviews Hank Starch of J. Walter Petroleum, which won an offshore drilling block through anonymous research and a four-million-dollar investment from a woman named Ida Jo Welsher.

April reviews security footage from Ben’s bar and identifies the blond woman as Trisha Sullivan, Edward Sullivan’s wife. When Jerry Dawson’s former secretary Sally Kimble agrees to meet Dean, the Caracal shoots her dead before she can talk.

Dean and April fly to Washington, DC, and find the Sullivans’ Georgetown home ransacked. Eric confronts Senator Ted Lambert, who admits he was blackmailed with a prostitution trap set by Carson’s chief of staff.

Within hours, the Caracal kills Lambert in his Capitol Hill townhouse.

At Union Station, Trisha Sullivan tells Dean and April that she and Jerry Dawson had an affair after Edward became abusive.

Jerry discovered that Edward Sullivan, Senator Lambert, and billionaire Hossle Jester were working together to avoid liability from a Gulf oil spill.

Jerry faked his death, funded an escape through the lease scheme, and hid evidence before being captured and tortured in Costa Rica.

Trisha gives Dean a key and code to a UPS Store mailbox. The mailbox contains encrypted logs and surveillance photos proving Jester, Lambert, Sullivan, and Jerry were on Jester’s boat coordinating the forty-million-dollar hire of Yusuf Demir.

Dean and April confront Jester at a Ballet Austin fundraiser, and he makes incriminating threats in front of witnesses.

Yusuf Demir appears and fires at them, hitting Dean as he shields April.

Eric, who tracked Dean with a GPS tag, shoots Demir dead. Dean publishes the explosive story.

Jester is arrested on his private jet, Edward Sullivan is abducted by the Zeta Cartel, and Andrew Rainer dies by suicide.

In Costa Rica, Jester’s forces release Jerry Dawson, who returns to Austin to seek forgiveness.

Three weeks later the family is rebuilding its life, and Dean receives a text with a photo of a snowy mountain cabin.

He drives there and reunites with April.
