The Sky Beneath Her Summary: Secrets of the Oceanus
The Sky Beneath Her: A House Full of Someone Else’s Past
Tula Cassidy is broke, divorced, and sleeping badly.
Her escape comes as a work assignment nobody else wants: clear out a long-abandoned 1940s beach house in Southern Shores, North Carolina, left behind by a man who lived to be 118.
Inside that house sits an unfinished manuscript about the 1942 sinking of the Oceanus — the same wreck where Tula’s diver mother vanished seven years earlier.
Mary Ellen Taylor’s novel moves between Tula’s present-day search and the wartime voyage of a pregnant Austrian refugee trying to reach New York alive.
TL;DR: The Short Version
A 2026 paralegal on the Outer Banks finds a hidden manuscript that unravels both a 1942 shipwreck survival story and the truth about her own family.
- Two timelines: wartime Atlantic crossing and modern coastal town.
- Two women: one fleeing an abusive husband, one fleeing her own grief.
- Central threads: inherited secrets, the ocean as both threat and healer, and the choice to stop playing it safe.
- Ending in brief: answers arrive, and both women start over on their own terms.

The Sky Beneath Her Summary
Spoiler warning: the section below covers the plot, including the ending.
The novel opens in Vienna in September 1941. Naida runs along the Danube with a small bundle, fleeing a husband she cannot outrun by ordinary means.
She has already made a wish into the river that curdled into something closer to a curse. Under false papers she becomes Gertrude Werner and travels through wartime Europe to Trinidad.
In April 1942 she boards the liner Oceanus, heavily pregnant and bound for New York. Dr. Atticus Brooks is aboard too, posing as a rare book dealer while working as an intelligence operative.
Chief Mate Kevin Riggs runs the deck. Wealthy industrialist William Weller travels with the actress Sigrid Stein, and Weller is secretly tied to Gertrude’s husband Alfred Gruber.
Weller recognizes Gertrude and threatens to hand her and her unborn child back to Austria. Four days out, a German U-boat torpedoes the ship off the Outer Banks.
Weller tries to seize Gertrude on the tilting deck. Kevin Riggs intervenes, and she is lowered into a lifeboat with Mrs. DuPont and Dr. Brooks.
Weller dies during the sinking. In the lifeboat, Gertrude gives birth to a son, Eric, with Dr. Brooks guiding the delivery and Sigrid later arriving to help.
Rescued by the USS Roper in Norfolk, Gertrude takes over Sigrid’s discarded identity and becomes Margaret. Alfred Gruber drowns in a Danube boat incident arranged through Brooks’s network.
Margaret marries Kevin Riggs, who raises Eric as his own. That is the buried line Mary Ellen Taylor later pulls into the open.
In June 2026, Tula Cassidy works as a paralegal at a Norfolk firm and is still recovering from her divorce from Dave. Managing partner Mr. Brooks sends her to clear his great-uncle’s empty flattop house in Southern Shores.
He also hands her part of a manuscript. Tula reconnects with her old friend Kaitlin, who runs a cleaning service and surf shop, and runs into Nathan Rogan, her teenage crush and her mother’s former dive buddy.
Nathan has a grant to dive and film the Oceanus. Tula, who has panic attacks around water, keeps finding reasons to stay near it anyway.
Cleaning the house turns up photographs, false passports, and the rest of the manuscript. Retired reporter Lex Green then gives Tula two facts that rearrange her life.
Her great-grandmother was Margaret. And her mother Mariah, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in Greece, chose to die on her own terms on the Oceanus rather than in a hospital bed.
Dr. Brooks had quietly funded Tula’s trust fund at Mariah’s request.

Tula fights with Kaitlin about playing life safe, then decides to stop. She starts pool re-entry training with Nathan and dives the wreck.
At the hull she releases her sea-glass necklace into the ship and surfaces with the panic gone. She donates the manuscript to the Manteo historical center.
She resigns from the law firm, accepts a final trust check from Mr. Brooks, and agrees to move to Florida with Nathan for a diving career.
