⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section contains detailed, chapter-by-chapter plot summaries.
Prologue
Thirty years prior to the main events, the continent of Brekon is torn apart by a cataclysm known as “the Break.” Soldier Varrik scrambles through the chaos to save his younger brother, Trigg, but can only watch as a volcanic fissure swallows him whole.
Varrik survives by clinging to a boulder as molten core power floods his veins, transforming him into a Core fae. Overcome with grief, he finds only his brother’s smoldering boot leg and wraps his wrist in the scorched fabric, cursing the Fates as new, immense power takes root within him.
Part One: Hamelyn and the Journey to Penbroge
Chapter 1
In the city of Hamelyn, twenty-five-year-old Esti works at a paper mill with her Aunt Lenna. She is a fiend, a half-fae and half-Bane hybrid, who must conceal her stubby horns from citizens who blame her kind for the deadly Fly Plague that has suffocated the city for five months.
As she navigates the city, enduring the curses of a fanatic, Esti secretly uses her rare magic to read people’s character constellations in their stars. Her identity as a fiend must remain hidden at all costs.
Chapter 2
Esti returns home to her tenement apartment where she lives with her Aunt Lenna and her beloved mother, Marryn. Marryn suffers from a chronic neurological illness caused by the Break, which locks her muscles into agonizing fits and requires constant care.
Esti reads her mother’s stars, which have never changed: Willing to sacrifice. Can withstand heartbreak. Would do anything for her daughter. She prays to the Fates for a cure, sharing a sweet biscuit with her mother while her mind turns to finding a solution.
Chapter 3
Unnatural red lightning and a deluge of black rain shatter the night, killing the Flies but signaling a new disaster. The Poison Plague has arrived, rendering the city’s water supply toxic and plunging Hamelyn into chaos.
The corrupt Govern, Lord Havlon, announces he is damming the river and selling water for coin. As riots erupt, Esti and Lenna sprint toward patrol headquarters to secure water rations before they run out.
Chapter 4
Esti and Lenna reach the front of a panicked crowd at the patrol headquarters. The guards extort them, charging three coins per jar and leaving them nearly penniless in exchange for two jars of water.
On their way home, they are cornered in an alley by two fae men who see Esti’s revealed horns and try to steal their water. Lenna’s fierce confrontation buys them time but doesn’t solve the problem.
Chapter 5
Esti’s ex-fiancé, Theo, arrives with friends and scares the thugs away. He introduces his new, lovely fae fiancée, Gisela, whose stars Esti reads as warm and kind, making it impossible to hate her.
Theo warns Esti that citizens will violently target fiends as desperation grows. After thanking him, Esti sends him back to his new life, feeling the sting of his abandonment.
Chapter 6
Lenna comforts Esti over her heartbreak, but their conversation is cut short when Marryn suffers three violent, consecutive seizures. Esti discovers their supply of life-saving bittermint tincture is completely gone.
Ignoring the strict curfew, Esti kisses her mother’s forehead and sprints out into the city, desperate to find an apothecary before her mother dies.
Chapter 7
After searching the city, Esti finds an apothecary who sells her the last of their money in exchange for sunshade peel tincture. As she leaves, the sun sets, and she is instantly caught by patrolman Klaus for breaking curfew.
Klaus drags her to a public punishment platform and brutally whips her back thirteen times with an iron-spiked, poison-tainted whip. He leaves her chained to the post, bleeding and unconscious, as screams begin to fill the city.
Chapter 8
Esti awakens on the platform in immense pain to a horrific sight: a Rat Plague of cat-sized, bloodthirsty rats swarms the streets, devouring citizens. Unable to free herself, she summons a burst of adrenaline and painfully climbs the 40-foot greased pole to escape the swarm.
She spends the night perched on the narrow top, dangling above the rat-infested city, surviving through sheer willpower as people are eaten alive below.
Chapter 9
At dawn, a haunting melody cuts through the air. Lord Varrik, the legendary Pied Piper, marches into Hamelyn wearing his multi-colored cloak and playing his enchanted pipe.
The magic melody charms every rat in the city, forcing the entire Rat Plague to march in synchronicity into the river and drown, ending the threat.
Chapter 10
As the survivors emerge, the Piper demands payment from Lord Havlon for clearing the Plague: 130 citizens. Havlon readily agrees, sacrificing his people. The Piper’s magic compels chosen fae and fiends, including Esti, into a captive parade.
When his eyes meet Esti’s, she reads his stars: Defender. Thief. Liar. His magic forces her to join his line of captives, pulling her away from her home and family.
Chapter 11
Under the pipe’s compulsion, Esti and the 130 captives are led to Dolven Bay and loaded onto a large ferry. Esti realizes the Piper has taken nearly every fiend in Hamelyn, including 28 of them, among whom are six children.
The Piper, Varrik, stands at the front of the ferry, playing his pipe with arrogant indifference as they cross the water toward his territory.
Chapter 12
Seeing Esti’s infected back wounds, Varrik summons Lady Lacera, the Needle, who uses a magic wooden needle to instantly numb her pain. Meanwhile, a captive tries to escape but is easily stopped by the immense strength of Frid, another Core fae.
Theo attempts to comfort Esti, but she feels a deep emotional chasm between them, feeling more alone than ever.
Chapter 13
Upon landing, a rebellious captive is violently subdued by Frid, who warns that anyone who disobeys will be thrown into the sea. The Piper announces they will camp for the night and continue to Penbroge City at dawn.
Esti watches the camp being set up, her mind filled with desperate thoughts of escape despite the threats.
Chapter 14
At the camp, Esti confronts Theo about his shallow past affections, sensing his lies. Late at night, she attempts to escape into the dark forest, but her path is blocked by Garren, a Core fae enforcer.
She discovers his stars are Resilient, Prefers silence, and Holds a grudge, a dangerous combination.
Chapter 15
Before she can act, the Piper uses his pipe to magically pull her back like a puppet. Furious, Varrik drags her into his private tent and restrains her on his bedroll, asserting intense physical control.
He forces her to say “thank you, sir,” and orders her to sleep, leaving Esti’s body burning with a mix of fear and unwilling attraction.
Chapter 16
In the morning, Varrik discovers Esti’s bandages have bled through. To keep her from slowing the group, he forces her onto his horse. When she tries to steal his pipe, he crushes her hand and ties her to his saddle.
After she stumbles, he hoists her onto the horse in front of him and whispers a vow into her ear: “Unlike Lord Havlon, I keep what’s mine. And you, fiend, are never getting away from me.”
Chapter 17
During the long ride, Varrik and Esti engage in verbal sparring. The group eventually arrives at a leyline, a magical teleportation pathway marked by ancient stone cairns.
One by one, the captives step onto the leyline and vanish, transporting directly to the grounds of Penbroge Castle, Varrik’s grand home.
Chapter 18
Inside the castle, Varrik separates the fiends from the fae. Esti’s infected wounds cause her to collapse, and Varrik, in a moment of panic, scoops her into his arms before she hits the floor.
He carries her to his private bedroom, his demeanor fierce as he commands her not to die, revealing a possessive concern that shocks Esti even through her feverish haze.

Chapter 19
Esti’s fever intensifies as the blood infection from the poison whip spreads. She endures agonizing, sleepless nights, her screams echoing in the room as the pain becomes unbearable.
The suffering strips her of all conscious thought until she finally succumbs to darkness and loses consciousness.
Chapter 20
Esti wakes to find a healer treating her wounds roughly. Varrik bursts in, furious, and dismisses the healer for his callousness. He then personally tends to Esti, giving her a bitter medicine to swallow.
He gently lays her back in his bed, and she falls asleep surrounded by his unique, comforting scent of metallic sugared-smoke.
Part Two: Penbroge Castle and the Desert Leyline
Chapter 21
Esti awakens four days later, fully recovered, in Varrik’s plush bed. She learns that Varrik had the rough healer dismissed and that Lady Lacera, who has a prejudice against fiends, has been helping tend to her.
After a bath and fresh bandages from servants, Esti moves into Varrik’s adjoining sitting room, feeling stronger but still a captive.
Chapter 22
As Esti eats a luxurious meal, Varrik enters and asks for her full name. She gives him “Estinya Zeta,” and he softly repeats “Estinya,” sending a shiver down her spine.
He evades her questions about why she’s there, stating only that it’s her new reality and that he is interested in her, before ordering her to follow him.
Chapter 23
Varrik leads Esti to Lady Ciona, a Core fae who can scent blood. Ciona takes a small sample from Esti’s arm, her eyes turning bloodshot red as she confirms Esti’s infection is fully healed.
Ciona also reveals that Varrik stayed by Esti’s bedside for the entire four days of her fever, a fact that surprises Esti.
Chapter 24
Esti tricks her guards into taking her to the old servants’ quarters, where she reunites with the other captive fiends. Her friend Kaetir assures her that all 28 fiends are being treated well, fed, and given outdoor time.
Their reunion is cut short when a furious Varrik bursts in, ordering Esti to follow him back upstairs immediately.
Chapter 25
Back in his rooms, Varrik forbids Esti from leaving without his permission, demanding she learn the rules of his “game.” He displays intense jealousy over her friendship with Kaetir, questioning why Kaetir was holding her hand.
After Esti tells him to “go to hell,” he slams the door and posts four guards outside, locking her in.

Chapter 26
While Varrik is away, Esti searches his room, discovering a hidden sketch of his deceased brother, Trigg. She also finds a hidden window pane and devises a plan to escape.
She ties bedsheets together to form a rope and begins to climb out the window, but Varrik’s voice suddenly booms from behind her, catching her in the act.
Chapter 27
Varrik pulls Esti back inside and carries her to his bed. Instead of punishment, he cuts away her bandages and gently applies a healing salve to her back, which smells like bittermint and velvane.
When he asks why she was whipped, she tells him it was for breaking curfew by one minute, a fact that leaves him brooding in silence.
Chapter 28
Varrik continues to tend to Esti’s back with surprising tenderness. He admits there is “something about her” that makes him keep her separate from the others. He leans in, noting she smells “sweet,” and gently strokes her horn.
When he asks if she feels drawn to him, she denies it, attributing her feelings to his magic. Frustrated, he leaves, ordering the guards to change his bedding because it “reeks of fiend.”
Chapter 29
After Varrik leaves to collect more fiends, Esti demands to be moved to the fiend quarters. He eventually agrees but taunts her about another fiend woman showing him “appreciation,” which sparks a sharp pang of jealousy in Esti.
This confusing feeling leaves her angry and shaken, realizing Varrik is starting to steal something from her heart.
Chapter 30
In the fiend quarters, Esti is publicly accused by a fiend woman named Nell of being Varrik’s “whore.” Others, like Odelina, defend her, revealing that Varrik rescued their burg from anti-fiend mobs.
Their argument is interrupted when Ciona and Frid arrive, announcing they are all leaving for a new location via leyline.
Chapter 31
The fiends are transported to the deserted Midoraye Burg. Here, Ciona reveals a world-altering secret: a fiend’s blood, when spilled during a Plague, can stop it. She explains that fiend blood is the key to preventing all nine Plagues.
The gathered fiends are stunned, their identity as hated outcasts suddenly transformed into the potential saviors of the world.
Chapter 32
As the fiends react with shock and anger, Ciona explains the need for secrecy to prevent them from being trafficked. Inspired by her words, Odelina and others volunteer their blood.
Varrik stands behind Esti when Nell taunts her, and Ciona divides the fiends into groups to begin testing their blood against contained Plagues.
Chapter 33
Esti volunteers, but the sight of the Rat Plague pit triggers a traumatic flashback to her whipping. Varrik steps in, playing a gentle melody to calm her panic. Afterward, he suddenly licks her blood from a cut on her arm.
Shocked, Esti kicks him and he immediately hoists her onto his horse, galloping away from the burg without explanation.
Chapter 34
Esti demands answers, biting Varrik’s arm. He finally explains that his Core magic has “Latched” onto her life force. The Latch is a permanent bond that only forms when there is mutual attraction, linking their lives forever.
He promises she will be protected and age slowly, but can never leave his side, revealing the depth of their connection.
Chapter 35
That night, Esti dreams of her family, but the dream turns into a nightmare where her Aunt Lenna accuses her of ruining everything and her mother asks why she abandoned her. She wakes up feeling immense guilt.
The nightmare reinforces her desperation to return home, torn between her growing feelings for Varrik and her duty to her family.
Chapter 36
Determined to escape, Esti disguises herself as a servant and manages to get past the guards. She runs across the castle grounds and leaps into the leyline portal, successfully escaping Penbroge Castle.
However, her victory is short-lived as she tumbles out of the portal and lands in a strange, new environment.
Chapter 37
Esti lands in a sulfurous mud pool in a hot desert. As she tries to get her bearings, a giant, predatory sand monster called a serpill emerges from the dunes and corners her, preparing to attack.
Just as it lunges, Varrik appears, playing a thunderous song on his pipe and drawing his sword.
Chapter 38
Varrik kills the serpill, but as he turns to Esti, a second monster attacks from behind, sinking its venomous fangs into his side. He decapitates the second beast before collapsing, venom frothing from the wound.
Gripping Esti’s hand, he begs her to stay before losing consciousness in the sand.
Chapter 39
Refusing to let him die, Esti hauls Varrik’s heavy body to the safety of the mud pools, which the monsters avoid. She packs the mud onto his wound to stop the bleeding.
Watching over him in the moonlight, she finally admits to herself that she is deeply in love with him.
Chapter 40
Varrik wakes with a high fever, and Esti confesses she doesn’t hate him. He asks for a kiss, and they share their first intense moment of passion. He then admits the venom was temporary and he just wanted her to stay.
After she shoves him in anger, he apologizes for his cruelty and promises things will be different, restoring a fragile hope between them.
Part Three: Wystinn Burg and Beddig Burg
Chapter 41
Back at Penbroge Castle, Varrik apologizes for his past behavior and confesses he wanted her from the moment he saw her. Esti admits she is drawn to him too and tells him about her sick mother.
Touched, Varrik gives her paper and ink, promising to have a letter delivered to her family in Hamelyn.
Chapter 42
Esti writes a letter full of hope for her family. Varrik introduces her to his messenger, Henry, and is startled to discover he can feel the energy of her star-reading magic through their Latch bond.
He promises to have Henry deliver the letter and await a reply, then invites Esti to dine with him.
Chapter 43
Varrik hosts an extravagant, romantic dinner for Esti on a castle terrace. He wipes away her face powder, telling her she has “rewritten beauty” and admiring her freckles.
His nervousness over the feast is endearing, and Esti finds herself giving in to their mutual pull.
Chapter 44
The dinner is playful, with Esti and Varrik teasing each other. He asks her to call him Varrik and confesses his obsession with her horns, hair, and freckles.
He asks her to build trust with him, promising to consume every inch of space between them, but they are interrupted by an announcement.
Chapter 45
Varrik introduces Esti to his ally, Govern Conrad, whose magic can heal through bandages. Varrik insists on wrapping the bandages himself, and Conrad’s magic completely heals Esti’s back.
Afterward, Esti is shown to her new private bedroom, a sign of Varrik’s growing respect for her.
Chapter 46
Fully healed, Esti is taken to Wystinn Burg, a hidden sanctuary where fiends and fae live together in peace. She sees her friends thriving and working, their lives vastly improved.
Varrik shows her the town, telling her he wants her by his side, and his vision for a better future begins to take shape.
Chapter 47
Esti tours the town, seeing the hope Varrik has created. Varrik joins her, telling her he wants her “on his side.” He presses a sweet kiss to her forehead, deepening her feelings for him.
She realizes she is in danger of completely losing her heart to him.
Chapter 48
Varrik takes Esti to meet a dying Core fae named Birute, who is aging rapidly without a Latch. Varrik explains this is why he needs to find Latches for his people, but Esti spots Theo locked in a jail cell.
Shocked, she rushes to confront Varrik about his methods.
Chapter 49
Theo explains he was locked up for trying to escape to his wedding. Esti confronts Varrik, arguing for Theo’s release and challenging his idea of sacrifice.
Varrik relents, releasing Theo, and Esti shares a final, peaceful goodbye with her past, fully embracing her connection to Varrik.
Chapter 50
Ciona theorizes Esti’s unique blood might be the key to the rare Darkness Plague. Varrik flatly refuses to let her anywhere near it.
Their discussion is interrupted by an urgent report: an Ash Plague has struck Beddig Burg, a city in Varrik’s territory.
Chapter 51
Varrik’s team, including Esti, travels to Beddig Burg where a suffocating Ash Plague is burying the town. The air is thick with putrid ash, and screams are heard from those trapped below.
They prepare to enter the deadly storm to save as many as they can.
Chapter 52
Varrik uses his pipe to compel 242 citizens out of the Ash heaps, but the strain on his magic is immense. Esti’s presence as his Latch gives him the strength to persevere.
Watching him risk everything to save others, Esti’s heart swells with pride, seeing him as a true savior.
