Julia’s Prologue
Seventeen-year-old Julia Lowell is recovering from an emergency room visit caused by an allergic reaction to cashews when a silver-haired attorney arrives at her family’s Nebraska home.
Bernard Elizando introduces himself as the representative for the estate of Remington, an eccentric wealthy man the Lowells barely remember.
Bernard reveals that Remington named Julia’s parents as primary beneficiaries of his vast estate, including a five-story Manhattan mansion.
The inheritance comes with conditions: the family must live in New York City for six months, and twins Julia and Liam must attend the exclusive Gardenwood Academy.
Still healing from her boyfriend Will dumping her for another girl, Julia sees the move as an escape from public humiliation. Her parents hesitate due to their struggling grocery store, but Bernard urges them to consider the life-changing offer.

Damion’s Prologue
Seventeen-year-old Damion Rutledge sits through a tense dinner with his emotionally distant parents when family attorney Jeffrey Callahan arrives unexpectedly. Jeffrey announces that the estate of Damion’s great-uncle Remington has been disbursed to complete strangers from Nebraska.
Damion shared a secret bond with Remi and planned to spend the summer at Riverside Manor, his only sanctuary. His father Quinn, a ruthless financial magnate, erupts in fury and vows to contest the will and evict the Midwestern family.
Quinn reveals the unknown family will occupy Riverside Manor for six months. Damion is consumed by grief and resentment toward the incoming strangers taking over the one place he felt truly at home.
Chapter 1: Arrival at Riverside Manor
Thirty days after Bernard’s visit, the Lowell family arrives in Manhattan and pulls up outside the grand stone edifice of Riverside Manor. Julia reveals her parents’ grocery store was facing foreclosure before the inheritance saved them.
Bernard provides a cover story, instructing the family to claim they earned their fortune through investments while concealing the residency stipulation. While waiting for Bernard, Julia and Liam explore the neighborhood and stop for burritos.
Julia realizes she lost her worn leather wallet, which belonged to her ex-boyfriend Will and holds sentimental photos. Returning to the restaurant, she learns no wallet was turned in, leaving her grieving her past life.
As Julia stands furious on the sidewalk, she spots a prep-school boy across the street holding her lost wallet.
Chapter 2: Street Confrontation
Damion examines the lost wallet, musing over a winter photo of a girl inside. Julia charges across the street demanding her property, and Damion holds it above her reach while checking the owner’s license.
Julia explains the wallet belonged to her ex-boyfriend William Malone, but her own ID is tucked behind his. Damion reads the name Julia Lowell from Springfield, Nebraska, and realizes he is face-to-face with one of the grifters occupying Remi’s house.
As Julia leaps to grab the wallet, she accidentally headbutts Damion in the nose. Bleeding and in pain, Damion hands over the wallet and watches her march away, knowing his enemy has arrived.
Chapter 3: First Day at Gardenwood
On their first day of school, Clint takes a traditional photograph of the twins on the mansion’s front stoop. Inside, Julia discovers a secret library accessed by pressing a first-edition copy of The Great Gatsby.
At Gardenwood Academy, Headmaster Seth Green delivers a sharp warning: Julia’s math scores are dangerously low. If her retest scores do not improve, she will be expelled, causing the family to fail the inheritance stipulation.
Liam requests the academy’s top math tutor, and Headmaster Green assigns student guides Jasmine and Beckett to lead the twins through their first day. Julia feels the weight of her family’s future pressing down on her.
Chapter 4: Gardenwood Hallways
Jasmine guides Julia through the crowded hallways, introducing the school’s social structure. They are joined by Donovan, who explains the various cliques including The Toms, The Oscars, and The Dead Poets.
In homeroom, Julia’s focus vanishes when Damion Rutledge walks in looking polished in a sweater and Rolex. Making eye contact, Julia realizes he is the boy whose nose she broke and stumbles into a desk.
Throughout the day, Julia feels isolated and judged by wealthy peers. After a stressful meeting about math remediation, she drops her textbooks in the hallway, and Damion walks past without helping.
Chapter 5: Headmaster’s Office
After school, Damion and Beckett enter Headmaster Green’s office. Green explains that a new student needs confidential math tutoring to avoid social embarrassment and pass assessments.
Green reveals the struggling student is Julia Lowell, residing at Riverside Manor. Hearing Remi’s home referred to as the Lowell residence infuriates Damion, and he initially refuses to help.
As Damion exits, Julia corners him in the hallway, desperately asking him to accept the tutoring job. Damion plays hard to get, demanding a future favor in exchange for confidentiality, enjoying the upper hand.
Chapter 6: Stoop Deal
Dressed in threadbare sweatpants, Julia is startled when the doorbell rings. She opens the door to find Damion smirking at her casual attire, offering his tutoring services.
Julia feels embarrassed but remembers Headmaster Green’s warnings. Recognizing that failing math will cost her family the inheritance, she swallows her pride and formally asks for his help.
She demands the tutoring remain secret in exchange for a favor. Damion flirtatiously accepts and steps inside Riverside Manor, leaving Julia flustered by his presence.
Chapter 7: First Home Tutoring
Damion begins tutoring Julia at the kitchen island, discovering his concise methods actually help her understand math. He uses the session to inspect the house and learn about her family’s grocery store background.
When Julia steps out, Damion wanders into the library and spots a legal pad with notes referencing Remington and Bernard Elizando. Realizing this could serve as legal evidence, he secretly photographs it.
Donovan unexpectedly arrives, catching Damion there. Damion covers by claiming they were hanging out, triggering school gossip. Later, Damion learns his mother will host the Age of Innocence ball.
Chapter 8: Riverside Park Confrontation
Julia walks her cat Clank through Riverside Park, enjoying the autumn foliage and financial security. She spots a boy on her favorite bench writing in a journal and realizes it is Damion.
At school, Julia receives a text from her cousin Lauren reporting that a mysterious caller inquired about Lowell’s Market. Near her locker, Julia is cornered by The Skins, who confront her over rumors about Damion.
Suddenly, Damion approaches, grabs a baguette from Julia’s hands, and dramatically declares he will make serious moves so she never forgets him, leaving the mean girls stunned.
Chapter 9: Defending Julia
After teasing Julia with the baguette, Damion walks with Coco, Naomi, and Bella, who press him for details about Julia New Money Lowell. Damion defends Julia’s Midwestern background while maintaining his rebellious stance.
Part of him feels empathy for how poorly Julia fits in, while another part hopes the social rejection forces her family to abandon the house. Later during study hall, Damion texts Julia flirtatiously under the guise of scheduling tutoring.
Chapter 10: Social Cliques
At lunch, Jasmine and Donovan explain Damion’s reputation as a mysterious loner from a prominent family. They describe the season, a series of lavish parties leading to an extravagant Halloween ball.
Julia insists Damion is strictly her tutor and swears she has no romantic interest after Will broke her heart. At home, Shawna expresses excitement when Liam mentions Damion, mistaking him for a suitor.
Julia clarifies that Damion is only her confidential tutor, though her parents remain optimistic about her making friends.
Chapter 11: Dartmouth Pressure
Damion ignores urgent calls from his father demanding he attend a Dartmouth promotional trip. He resents his father’s expectation that he study finance and join Rutledge Investments.
Damion holds a secret dream, shared only with Uncle Remi and Beckett, to attend veterinary school in Colorado. Beckett urges him to come clean before admissions deadlines.
Later, Damion and Beckett head to the basketball courts where Beckett has invited Liam to play. Damion feels uneasy around Liam, knowing the truth about the inheritance.
Chapter 12: Basketball Courts
Liam convinces Julia to walk to the basketball courts so she can socialize. There, Julia sees Damion playing shirtless and is thoroughly flustered by his physique.
Coco and Naomi sit nearby looking effortlessly stylish. Feeling out of place and terrified of being caught watching, Julia flees toward the statue near her house.
Safe inside Riverside Manor, Julia receives a text from Damion teasing her: “I saw you watching, Nebraska.”
Chapter 13: Irving Farm Coffee
Damion meets Julia at Irving Farm Coffee for tutoring, disappointed they are not at Riverside Manor. Julia arrives dressed casually in flannel and Converse, and Damion presents her with a fresh baguette.

Chapter 16: Cat Loyalty
During another home tutoring session, Julia watches her cat Clank climb onto Damion’s lap and purr while Damion gently pets him. As Damion points out an error in her math problem, Julia realizes the tutor is more charming than the evil persona.

Overwhelmed by a panic attack, Julia retreats to the stairs, reciting Shakespeare to regulate her breathing. Downstairs, Quinn publicly condescends to Julia about her lack of college plans.
Unexpectedly, Damion steps in to defend Julia, lying to his father that Julia has endless options because she is brilliant.

However, Bernard plays along with the cover story. When Julia leaves briefly, Bernard confronts Damion privately, warning that he will not lie for him and demanding Damion tell Julia the truth.
Damion accuses Bernard of switching sides, but Bernard replies there are no sides and expresses faith that Damion will do the right thing.
