The Tearsmith Summary: A Gothic Tale of Forbidden Love
(Spoilers)
The story begins in the oppressive atmosphere of Sunnycreek Home, where Nica Dover has lived since her parents’ death.
She copes with the trauma of the orphanage’s abusive matron, Margaret, by wrapping Band-Aids around her fingers.
Her life changes when Anna and Norman Milligan visit and choose her for adoption. Before they leave, they are captivated by the piano music of Rigel Wilde, a brilliant but hostile boy who has tormented Nica for years. They decide to adopt him as well.
In their new home, Rigel presents a charming facade to the Milligans while remaining cold and aggressive toward Nica. He is intensely jealous of any boy who approaches her, especially a popular student named Lionel.
Flashbacks reveal that Rigel’s hostility is a mask for a deep, all-consuming love for Nica that began when they were children. He believes he is fundamentally broken and a danger to her gentle spirit.
The past resurfaces when Detective Rothwood arrives, investigating the crimes of Sunnycreek’s former matron.
The trauma of her memories sends Nica into a panic, and she flees into a storm, where Rigel finds her and carries her to safety.
As the adoption process moves forward, the tension of becoming legal siblings creates a painful conflict. Rigel, believing he will ruin Nica’s chance at a normal life, secretly asks Anna to cancel his adoption.
After a school party, Nica finally confronts her own feelings and confesses her love to Rigel.
They share a kiss, choosing each other over the safety of their new family structure. The climax arrives when Lionel aggressively forces himself on Nica.
Rigel intervenes and brutally attacks him. During the fight, a car threatens Nica, and Rigel shields her with his body, taking the full impact.
Nica recovers, but Rigel suffers severe head trauma, falling into a deep coma that is worsened by a pre-existing neurological condition.
At the hospital, Nica learns the full extent of Rigel’s sacrifice and health issues. Adeline, a friend from the orphanage, reveals a buried memory: it was Rigel, not Adeline, who held Nica’s hand through the cellar door to comfort her in the dark as a child.
He had sworn her to secrecy, believing the wolf in the fairy tale could never hold the girl’s hand.
Refusing to give up, Nica stays by Rigel’s bedside daily, holding his hand and telling him stories. She also finds the strength to testify in court against Margaret, securing justice for the orphans.
One day, while crying on his chest and calling him her “Tearsmith,” Rigel miraculously awakens, revealing he heard every word she said.
To resolve the legal issues, Rigel’s adoption is canceled, and Nica is officially adopted by the Milligans.
Rigel remains a part of their family as her partner.
An epilogue set years later shows them living happily together, raising a daughter. The story ends with Nica tucking her daughter into bed, beginning to tell the legend of the Tearsmith all over again.
