Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh Summary: A Jury Killer Unmasked

Introduction

The verdict should decide who lives and who dies, but what if the killer is the one casting the vote?

In Thirteen, author Steve Cavanagh places a predator inside the one place the law considers sacred.

This fourth Eddie Flynn novel follows a defense attorney who once worked as a con artist, and it puts him against a killer with a medical condition that makes pain impossible.

The story moves through the cold, crowded courts of Manhattan. It is for readers who enjoy fast legal battles, serial killer psychology, and main characters who operate outside the standard rulebook.

Cavanagh, an Irish author and former lawyer, writes from his background in civil rights and legal practice.

Thirteen Summary: The Killer Within the Verdict

SPOILER WARNING: This section includes the full plot, including the ending.

Joshua Kane is a serial killer who cannot feel physical pain. His condition is called congenital analgesia. For years, he has committed murders along the East Coast and framed innocent people for them.

To secure guilty verdicts, he kills potential jurors, takes their identities, and sits on their juries.

In New York City, actor Robert Solomon is accused of murdering his wife, Ariella Bloom, and his head of security, Carl Tozer. Rudy Carp brings Eddie Flynn onto the defense team.

Eddie is a former con artist turned lawyer, and he is struggling with the breakup of his marriage to Christine and distance from his daughter, Amy.

Eddie meets Bobby Solomon and decides the actor is innocent.

He agrees to work the case. At the same time, Kane targets a private investigator named Wally Cook. Kane kills Wally and steals his identity to enter the jury pool.

Prosecutor Art Pryor challenges Kane from the main jury. Kane becomes the first alternate, Juror Thirteen. Kane then creates chaos to move into a voting seat. He runs over juror Brenda Kowolski.

The judge sequesters the jury at Grady’s Inn. Kane later strangles juror Manuel Ortega and stages it as a suicide. He frames juror Spencer Colbert with a fake “Guilty” note.

Eddie and his team find the physical evidence does not match the crime.

The mattress lacks blood from Ariella where Carl’s body lay. Router data shows Bobby’s iPod was active at home at midnight, but another device tried to look like his at 9:00 PM. FBI analyst Paige Delaney connects the case to a serial killer named “Dollar Bill.”

Kane kills the defense’s jury consultant, Arnold Novoselic, and frames Eddie. Corrupt detectives arrest Eddie and try to kill him. Eddie escapes with help from Harper and Judge Harry Ford. The corrupt officers die in the crash.

Eddie and Delaney realize the killer is on the jury. SWAT storms the hotel, but Kane escapes. Kane kills Art Pryor and drives to Bobby’s safe house. Eddie confronts Kane there.

A shootout follows, and Eddie shoots Kane multiple times, killing him with a shot to the head.

Eddie then exposes Bobby’s security guard, Holten, as Russell McPartland. McPartland was Kane’s accomplice. Delaney and Harper shoot McPartland before he can fire at Eddie.

The innocent men framed by Kane are cleared. Bobby Solomon is released. Eddie signs his divorce papers, but he stays committed to defending the innocent.

Kane kills Arnold Novoselic in Rhode Island and frames Eddie. Granger and Anderson arrest Eddie and try to kill him in a staged escape.

Eddie fights back, causes a crash, and is rescued by Harper and Judge Ford.

The corrupt officers die. Both sides give closing arguments, and the jury is dismissed to deliberate.

Section 5: Friday (Chapters 67 to 73)

FBI SWAT storms Grady’s Inn but targets the wrong juror because Kane planted a notebook.

Kane escapes through a window, kills Art Pryor, and steals his clothes and car. Eddie and Harper realize the killer’s DNA profile belongs to Russell McPartland, a corrupt security guard who swapped samples years ago.

They go to Bobby’s safe house, where Kane holds Bobby at gunpoint.

A chaotic shootout begins with SWAT and tear gas. Kane kills several federal agents. Eddie grabs a Glock and shoots Kane multiple times, killing him with a headshot.
