Cursed Daughters Summary: A Nigerian Gothic Family Saga

Introduction

Oyinkan Braithwaite returns with a novel about inheritance, obsession, and the weight of family stories.

Cursed Daughters moves between 1994 and 2025, following the women of the Falodun family in Lagos.

The book opens with a suicide and ends with a departure.

Between those two events sits a curse that shapes romantic choices across three generations.

Braithwaite, known for My Sister, the Serial Killer, shifts toward darker domestic territory here.

TL;DR: The Curse in One Breath

A family curse condemns the Falodun daughters to love in vain. Monife falls for Kalu Kenosi in 1994, loses him to his mother’s classism, and dies after a secret pregnancy and painful abortion.

Twenty-five years later, her niece Eniiyi—born on Monife’s burial day and looking identical to her—falls for Kalu’s son, Zubby.

The revelation forces Eniiyi to confront whether she is living her own life or repeating her aunt’s tragedy.

The novel follows how she breaks that loop.

Cursed Daughters Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. This section recounts the novel’s events, including the ending.

The story begins with Monife walking into Elegushi Beach at night in April 2000. She leaves a short note behind. Her body is later found, and her family buries her while her cousin Ebun is heavily pregnant.

Ebun gives birth to Eniiyi on the same day as Monife’s burial. The child looks exactly like Monife and even has a matching burn scar on her thigh. Grandma Bunmi believes Eniiyi is Monife’s reincarnation.

The novel moves back to 1994. Monife meets Kalu Kenosi, nicknamed Golden Boy, at a football match. She approaches him at a party, kisses him, and they begin a relationship.

Kalu’s mother rejects Monife because of her family background and academic record. She pushes Kalu toward Amara, the daughter of a wealthy family friend.

Desperate to keep Kalu, Monife visits a herbalist called Mama G. She receives a spiritual powder and instructions involving a blood-soaked menstrual pad with Kalu’s name pinned to it.

Kalu discovers the pad by accident. He is disgusted and accuses Monife of using juju. He ends the relationship and later marries Amara in January 1996.

In 1999, Monife and Kalu meet again at a supermarket. They begin a secret affair. Monife becomes pregnant. Ebun is also pregnant at the same time, but refuses to name the father.

Kalu’s mother and Amara confront Monife and demand she abort the child. Kalu does not defend her. Monife and Ebun obtain illegal abortion pills. Monife takes hers and suffers a miscarriage.

Ebun later admits she could not go through with the abortion. Devastated and feeling betrayed, Monife goes to Elegushi Beach and drowns herself.

Twenty-five years later, Eniiyi returns to Lagos in 2024 with a master’s degree in human genetics. She saves a young man named Zubby from drowning at the same beach where Monife died.

Eniiyi and Zubby fall in love. When she meets his parents, she discovers Zubby’s father is Kalu Kenosi. Amara attacks Eniiyi, screaming that Monife’s ghost has returned.

Eniiyi shaves her head, sleeps with her friend Funsho, and breaks up with Zubby to prove she has her own will. Grandma West dies from dementia shortly after.

At the wake, Kalu arrives and prostrates himself, begging forgiveness. Tolu reveals he deleted Kalu’s final message to Monife before her suicide—a message where Kalu promised to stand by her and keep the child.

Eniiyi returns Kalu’s old keepsakes, packed in a Royal Dansk tin, and leaves Nigeria for a genetic counselling job in the UK. Sango dies peacefully the next day.

The epilogue describes Monife’s spirit wrestling the family curse in the ocean until the curse expires. Eniiyi flies toward her new life, finally free from the pattern that claimed her aunt.
