A Far-Flung Life Summary: A Generational Tragedy

Spoiler Warning: The following summary recounts the novel’s full plot, including the ending.

On January 10, 1958, Phil MacBride drives a truck with his sons, Warren and Matt. He swerves to avoid what he thinks is a man, but it is a red kangaroo.

The truck rolls and bursts into flames. Phil and Warren are killed instantly.

Matt is thrown through the windscreen. He survives with severe brain trauma and no memory of the crash.

His mother, Lorna, and his sister, Rose, are left to cope. Rose carries an older guilt from being expelled from boarding school after a sexual scandal.

Rose had a secret ritual for managing shame. She wrote her sins on paper, chanted “Yawa,” and burned the notes.

On the morning of the crash, Rose wanted to stay at the station to see Miles Beaumont, a trainee manager. She lied to Matt, claiming his crush would be in town.

This lie put Matt in the truck in her place. Rose believes the crash is her fault.

Months later, Matt returns for a trial visit. During a thunderstorm, Rose and Matt drink whisky in a shed.

Matt’s brain injury lowers his inhibitions. A brief, clumsy sexual encounter occurs.

Matt has no memory of it the next day. Rose flees Meredith Downs in horror.

She moves to Port Grace and works at a meatworks under the alias Rose Smith. She learns she is pregnant.

A doctor refuses her request for an abortion. Rose gives birth to a boy in December 1958.

Dr. Finbar Rafferty recognizes her and flies her and the baby back to Meredith Downs. Rose is severely depressed.

Lorna arranges for a secret adoption. Before it happens, Rose hides a confession note inside her mattress.

On January 10, 1959, exactly one year after the crash, Rose takes the baby to the Proserpine mineshaft. She jumps, intending to kill them both.

Rose dies. Pete Peachey, a local roo shooter, finds the baby alive.

Sergeant Wisheart and Dr. Rafferty record Rose’s death as an accident. Lorna cancels the adoption and raises the boy, Andrew Ross MacBride, as her grandson.

By 1969, Andy is nine years old. Matt runs the station and has recovered much of his physical health.

Hollamby Mining arrives, led by geologist Bonnie Edquist. Matt initially resents her presence, but their relationship becomes romantic.

Matt discovers Rose’s hidden note while redecorating her old room. He realizes he is Andy’s father.

He hides this knowledge from everyone. Meanwhile, Andy starts a family tree project to find his father.

Andy suspects Pete Peachey or Miles Beaumont. Pete Peachey is a World War II veteran and former POW who secretly cross-dresses to cope with trauma.

Andy discovers Pete’s secret. The information spreads to a local gang led by Bradley Waghorn and Johnno MacBride.

The gang assaults Pete, defiles his makeup, and shoots his dog. Matt drives them off at gunpoint.

Pete euthanizes his dying dog and leaves the station. Matt breaks off his engagement to Bonnie, calling himself “damaged goods.”

Andy is sent to boarding school early. In 1988, Matt leaves Meredith Downs to work as a boatbuilder.

Andy takes over the station, marries Jane, and has three children. In 1999, Andy negotiates a joint venture with the now-retired Bonnie to turn the station into a conservation reserve.

In January 2000, Lorna is dying of cancer. She tells Matt she believes Andy’s father was Miles Beaumont.

Matt does not correct her. After Lorna dies, Andy tells Matt he is content not knowing his father’s identity.

Matt finally reunites with Bonnie. They reconcile and choose to live out their years together.

The book by M. L. Stedman ends with a pearling lugger being airlifted to the ocean, fulfilling a family promise.
