Fabulous Bodies Summary: The Full Story
Spoilers ahead.
Poppy Stringer lives in Palm Springs and manages 216,000 Instafeed followers while running a covert corpse-trafficking operation.
The money funds a luxury life for her five-year-old daughter, Marlo. Her best friend Noah Doyle, a Palm Springs Aerial Tramway operator receiving radiation treatment for melanoma, assists with the pickups.
After a retrieval at Yucca Valley Farewell Tributes, Poppy learns that queer icon Eddie Michaels has died at 68 after being struck by a vehicle outside a Palm Springs hotel. She posts a tearful memorial video. Shortly afterward, an anonymous caller offers five million dollars, with five hundred thousand wired upfront, to deliver Eddie’s body to Lake Arrowhead.
Poppy enters the Palm Springs medical examiner’s office through a back door left unlocked by an insider. She loads the corpse into her refrigerated box truck and drives onto the highway.
Mid-transit, the rear doors burst open, and she pulls over at the abandoned Tropitopia Café.
She finds the compartment empty, her ignition keys gone, and her handgun missing from the glove box. The cafĂ© then lights up with flickering neon, and Eddie Michaels reanimates inside, dancing to his song “A Star Like Me” in a blood-splattered sequined jumpsuit.
Poppy shoots him in the face, blowing out his eye socket and skull. Eddie pops his head back into place and says, “Don’t shoot.” The command paralyzes her instantly; Eddie can strip a victim of bodily control.
Eddie forces Poppy to chauffeur him around Palm Springs. He claims he made a satanic pact in his youth and must complete a four-stop ritual to avoid eternal damnation.
In an alley, he orders a skateboarder called Captain Danger to perform “The Splitting Headache,” a stunt that splits the young man’s head in half.
At Club Flamingo, a packed gay bar mourning Eddie’s death, ultraviolet blacklights reveal a cloud of neon pink dust drifting off Eddie’s body.
He makes the security guards delete surveillance footage, then commands them to kill each other with office supplies and a paper-cutter blade.
At a gated community, Eddie orders a sick security guard with severe nasal congestion to shoot herself. The command fails completely because her nasal passages are blocked. Poppy realizes Eddie’s mind control depends on airborne pheromones registered through the olfactory gland.
Poppy flees to a boutique motel called The T, breaks into a vintage vending machine, and snorts hot sauce to scorch her sinuses. She melts solid candle wax and jams wads of it deep into her nostrils, making herself immune. Eddie slaughters arriving police officers, while Poppy uses a computer in the motel spa to research historical records.
She finds a recurring pattern of self-inflicted flayings across centuries, all linked to four-victim groupings and late-stage skin cancer patients. At Fimi Date Farm, Eddie targets heiress Mary Fimi.
When Poppy stabs Eddie in the neck with a steak knife, he removes the blade and opens a wound in his side, revealing a shiny black entity writhing inside his abdomen. He handcuffs her to a coffee table and tells her he is her biological father.
Eddie explains that he is not human but an ancient, 1,700-year-old parasitic alien. The parasite breeds host lines across generations and jumps into genetically related offspring once its current body degrades. To fuel its metamorphosis, it consumes the metastasized skin cancer tissue of four people.
As Mary Fimi strips off her own skin to feed him, the old body cracks open. The parasite emerges as a five-foot-long armored black insect resembling a giant earwig, with sharp mandibles and four muscular tentacles.
Poppy slashes her own face with the steak knife, cutting through her cheek, forehead, and scalp to make herself an unusable host. Outraged, the parasite skitters away and declares it will “just have to start younger” before heading for Marlo.
Poppy breaks the handcuffs by fracturing the oak coffee table, retrieves Porsche keys, and races home. She fits swimming nose clips onto Marlo and Noah to shield them from the pink pheromone cloud.
The parasite attacks Noah but bites into his side, then violently retches. Poppy realizes that Noah’s experimental melanoma clinical trial cream, Aldafedrix, contains fluorouracil, which is toxic to the creature.
They drive to the Valley Station of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to retrieve Noah’s remaining cream from his locker. A pheromone-controlled guard, Kenny Hall, shoots and kills Noah, and Marlo knocks the guard unconscious with a baseball bat.
Poppy takes Noah’s keys and starts the hanging tramcar, ascending Mount San Jacinto. The parasite leaps onto the gondola roof, smashes windows, and grabs Marlo.
Poppy shoots the entity with a shotgun, but during the struggle the wax drops from her left nostril, leaving her open to Eddie’s command to stop. As the parasite moves to kill Marlo, Poppy’s love for her daughter overcomes the biological paralysis.
She uncaps the jar of Aldafedrix cream, shoves her entire arm and the open jar down the parasite’s throat, wraps her legs around it, and leaps out of the moving gondola. They crash hundreds of feet into the snowy crags below, where the cream liquifies the parasite’s innards and kills it.
Poppy loses her lower left arm, breaks her leg, and suffers severe wounds, but she crawls up the mountain path to the upper lodge. She reunites with Marlo at sunrise.
Three years later, official reports attribute the events to mass hysteria.
Poppy lives in a smaller Palm Springs home and funds her life through scheduled fashion vlogs, where her scars and prosthetic forearm serve as an inspirational beacon, plus a legal flower delivery business.
She and eight-year-old Marlo make an annual flower-delivery trek to honor the victims, ending at Noah Doyle’s grave.
