Threshing Day takes place on the continent of Navarre, a kingdom at war with neighboring Poromiel for centuries. The center of its military power is Basgiath War College, and its most feared division is the Riders Quadrant.
Every first-year cadet who reaches the age of twenty must enter Threshing Valley on October 1st. The valley is a bowl-shaped terrain ringed by ancient redwoods, boulders, and steep canyon cliffs where wild dragons live.
Dragons answer to their own hierarchy, the Empyrean, not to human kings or generals. They value courage, tactical sharp-mindedness, and authenticity.
They loathe crowds and routinely incinerate groups of cadets who try to tackle the valley together.
The Riders Quadrant operates under the Codex and the Code of Conduct. On Threshing Day, ethics become hypothetical, and murder between cadets often goes unpunished beneath the thick forest canopy.
A recent history shapes the valley’s politics. Duke Fen Riorson led a Tyrrish rebellion that was defeated, and its leaders were executed. Their hundred and seven children were forced into the Riders Quadrant as punishment.
These cadets, called marked ones or separatists, carry glowing rebellion relics carved into their skin by General Melgren’s dragon. They face hostility, prejudice, and assassination attempts from Navarrian cadets and officers.
The collection opens with an instructional guide titled “Trial by Fire: Threshing Advice for Dragonkind Professors.” Professors Valin Kaori and Ellery Mynna authored it, detailing the event’s lethal stakes and warning colleagues against attachment.
Brennan Sorrengail enters the valley in 624 AU and rejects his squadmate Flynn Ennis’s safety-in-numbers approach. Near the perimeter, he meets his father, a high-ranking scribe scholar, who gives him a warm black bead bracelet for luck.
Brennan climbs a tall central tree to survey the forest. An Orange Daggertail named Marbh approaches and mocks him for hiding in the trees, challenging his desire for a predictable green or brown dragon.
Brennan leaps from the branch, sprint-runs down the limb, and locks into Marbh’s seat. After a series of dizzying spiral dives, he earns the seat and lands on the flight field as Marbh’s bonded rider.
Three years later, Mira Sorrengail enters the valley searching for a Green Clubtail named Teine. She traverses the forest with squadmate Cowan Zana before tracking Teine to a clearing.
Teine smashes a massive tree to the ground to test her composure, then slices a razor-sharp talon into Mira’s thigh. Searing with agony, Mira refuses to break or bow to fear.
She declares that as the eldest Sorrengail daughter, pressure is her playground. Teine accepts her as his first rider, and Mira holds her seat through aerobatic maneuvers despite heavy blood loss.
In 631 AU, as snow falls over Basgiath, Xaden Riorson leads the first ten marked rebel children into the Riders Quadrant. Professor Kaori warns them of the dangers at the forest’s edge.
Xaden orders his group to move in pairs and defend themselves with lethal force if necessary. Deep in the woods, he and Garrick Tavis are ambushed by Prince Alic Tauri Baran and two sycophants, Eian and Lorne.
Alic holds a jeweled blade to Garrick’s throat and taunts Xaden about his executed father and confiscated lands. Using covert hand signals, Xaden disarms Alic with a lightning-fast sword strike and slits the prince’s throat.
Garrick slays Lorne and Eian. A Blue Daggertail named Sgaeyl, mated to Tairn, watches the entire confrontation and incinerates the bodies and weapons into ash, eliminating all evidence of the royal murder.
Sgaeyl searches Xaden’s mind and sees his haunted memories and desire for vengeance against Navarre. She chooses him, beginning their bond.
Garrick treks south with marked cadet Masen after Xaden stays behind. They witness Xaden flying overhead on Sgaeyl, confirming his survival, and Masen bonds an Orange Clubtail.

A gravelly voice pulls Garrick westward to Chradh, a Brown Scorpiontail who reveals he specifically sought Garrick’s self-sacrificing nature and bloodline. Garrick scales Chradh’s foreleg, secures his seat, and flies to the flight field.
All ten marked first-years survive and bond dragons. In 632 AU, Dain Aetos enters Threshing under intense pressure from his overbearing father, Colonel Aetos, who wants him to bond a reasonable green dragon.
In the trees, Dain saves second-year observer Joelle Tadita from a fatal fall. A Green Swordtail and a tomato-red Swordtail named Cath approach simultaneously, and Cath challenges Dain’s allegiance.
Dain leaps onto Cath’s back and defies his father’s instructions, prioritizing the direct bond over institutional orders. That same year, Bodhi Durran walks the valley feeling overshadowed by Xaden’s presence.
After witnessing four cadets incinerated for moving in a group, Xaden informs Bodhi that a Green Swordtail named Cuir is waiting for him. Frustrated by having his choice pre-determined, Bodhi impulsively rushes an unlisted Blue Clubtail.
The blue dragon breathes a fireball, but Cuir swoops in and catches Bodhi in midair with green talons. Cuir explains he chose Bodhi because he seeks power to end harm rather than merely achieve victory.
Marked cadet Imogen Cardulo marches into the forest filled with rage toward Navarre and is tracked by Garrick Tavis, whom she pushes away despite mutual attraction.
Glane, an Orange Daggertail previously bonded to Imogen’s grandmother, begins channeling power into her before she even mounts.
Agonizing heat surges through Imogen, but grounding techniques taught by her late mother and sister stabilize the power. She protects her friend Quinn from Glane’s test fire and mounts Glane, vowing to kill their common enemies in battle.
In 633 AU, energetic first-year Rhiannon Matthias enters the forest determined to succeed. She finds an injured cadet named Visia, whose face was melted by an orange dragon.
Feirge, a Green Daggertail, approaches and commends Rhiannon for her courage during Presentation.
Rhiannon mounts Feirge, endures a stomach-churning aerobatic flight, and lands at the flight field focused on becoming squad leader.
Sawyer Henrick, a repeat cadet terrified of failing a second time, teams up with squadmate Trina. They encounter Sliseag, a Red Swordtail, and Bregh, an Orange Clubtail.
Sliseag calls out Sawyer’s internal shame, explaining that he did not bond Sawyer the previous year simply because he was not available yet. Trina falls to her death from Bregh’s back.
Sliseag forces Sawyer to choose between wallowing in grief or climbing. Sawyer mounts Sliseag and takes flight.
Ridoc Gamlyn wanders the valley suffering from severe nausea and meets Aotrom, a twenty-year-old Brown Swordtail. Aotrom tests Ridoc’s quick wit, splashing him with water and sap before climbing a giant redwood tree.
Ridoc leaps onto Aotrom’s nose, scrambles up his neck, and secures his seat, earning the dragon’s respect as an equal. Marked cadet Liam Mairi sits calmly under a Polylepis tree carving a wooden dragon figurine.
Xaden stops by to check on Liam and mentions Violet Sorrengail’s involvement with Sgaeyl. Deigh, a Red Daggertail who knew Liam’s family line, arrives and bonds him to stand against the dark forces threatening the continent.

In 634 AU, Sloane Mairi is devastated by the death of her older brother Liam at Resson. She enters Threshing seeking death and intentionally walks into the path of an Orange Swordtail’s fire.
Dain Aetos tackles her to the ground, breaking Codex to save her life. Thoirt, a Red Daggertail and sister to Liam’s dragon Deigh, approaches and promises Sloane she will never force her to wield until she is ready.
Thoirt vows that Sloane will never be alone again. Sloane rests her forehead against Thoirt’s scales and finds a renewed will to live.
Prince Aaric, third son of King Tauri, enters the quadrant under a false name to investigate the truth behind his brother Alic’s death. He tracks Molvic, a fierce Blue Clubtail, dodging dragonfire along the way.
Aaric proves his moral conviction, asserting that unlike his father or brother, he will earn his power. Molvic accepts Aaric, completing the collection.
The collection ends with every main point-of-view character having survived the valley, cadet ambushes, and dragon trials.
