A Court This Cruel and Lovely Summary: Full Spoilers

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the ending.

In A Court This Cruel and Lovely, Stacia Stark introduces Prisca, a twenty-two-winter-old woman in Eprotha. She has managed to hide a rare ability to manipulate time, but one public slip forces her to run for her life.

Her adoptive mother pushes her off a cliff into a freezing river to escape the king’s guards.

After washing ashore, Prisca kills a bounty hunter and crosses into Mistrun. She tries to steal from a camp belonging to Lorian and his companions.

When Lorian realizes she can freeze time, he offers food, shelter, clothes, and training in exchange for her help sneaking through the gates of Lesdryn.

The journey reveals that Lorian’s men have unusual magic and contact with fae. In Lesdryn, Prisca reunites with her adoptive brother Tibris and joins the rebels. She discovers her best friend Asinia is imprisoned in the castle dungeons and risks entering the castle as a servant.

Inside the castle, Prisca learns the hybrid prisoners are poisoned with crushed fae iron. She wins the queen’s favor by saving her from fae fire, though a rebel maid named Wila is executed for starting the incident. At a royal dinner, Prisca sees Lorian disguised as a foreign prince.

Lorian wants an ancient amulet from the king’s chambers. Prisca agrees to find it in exchange for medicine to save Asinia. Meanwhile, the seamstress Telean reveals that Prisca was born Nelayra in the hybrid city of Crawyth, and that the prisoner Demos is her biological older brother.

During the welcome ball, Prisca freezes time while the rebels free 309 hybrids.

At the city gates, King Sabium and his forces corner them. Prisca throws the amulet to Lorian, and his glamour drops: he is the fae Bloodthirsty Prince who was blamed for Crawyth’s destruction.

Lorian unleashes lightning and forces Sabium to flee.

Demos is shot, and Lorian agrees to save him only if Prisca goes with him to his fae kingdom. Prisca accepts, vowing to make him pay for the lies and the destruction of her homeland.
