Adversary to the Villain Summary: Full Plot Breakdown

The story opens after the revelation that Evie Sage’s parents robbed her of her prophesied role as The Villain and gave it to Trystan Maverine. Trystan’s dark magic now lives inside Evie, coiling around her ankles and fingers.
Trystan finds his private study ransacked, pages of Rennedawn’s storybook burned in his hearth, and Kingsley the frog’s crown stolen. He and Evie question Marv, the front gate guard, who admits Valiant Guards coerced him into helping traitors.
Marv was pressured through gambling debts and a black-veined poison curse on his arm. When Evie accidentally triggers her magic during the questioning, she discovers hers sparkles like black diamonds in sunlight rather than Trystan’s shadowy mist.
Trystan formally names Evie his equal and accomplice instead of his subordinate. Meanwhile, Rebecka Erring receives word that fading magic has broken containment locks at the Fortis Family Fortress, freeing the Destiny Monster.
Hoping to help Evie control her power, Trystan takes her to an enchanted weeping willow wishing well in Hickory Forest. Inside the well’s pure magic, the two finally act on their long-repressed feelings.
Afterward, Evie notices her unchecked dark magic has stripped the willow of its flowers. Her fear that she destroys everything she touches returns stronger than before.
During a severe thunderstorm, the dungeon locks at Massacre Manor fail as well. A shapeshifting Silk monster escapes and former prisoners, including former Valiant Guard captains, riot against the staff.
Gideon Sage and Captain Keeley fight off attackers and share a kiss. Blade Gushiken and Becky apprehend Lord Walter Loring, whom Winnifred Erodina accidentally turns into a snail named Blossom.
The Destiny Monster appears on the manor parapet with an ultimatum: three sunsets before Hallows’ Eve, a curse will reset Rennedawn to its original timeline. In that timeline, Trystan never became The Villain and Evie never took her role.
Trystan consults Lionel, the flamboyant Curse Consultant, who explains that King Benedict needs an ancient anchor key. Benedict gambled the key away years earlier to a giant near Kaliora.
Trystan travels to the eastern border with Evie, Malcolm Maverine, and Prince Alexander Kingsley, temporarily restored from frog form by Winnifred. They meet Greta, a chef in a gingerbread house, and Fee, the giant holding the key.
Frog-Kingsley leaps in and snatches the flower-embellished white key from Fee’s palm. Before leaving, Evie’s estranged mother Nura Sage abandons Massacre Manor and reveals that a second copy of Rennedawn’s storybook exists, written in magical blue ink.
At the manor, Lyssa, Becky, Tatianna, Clare, and Blade use Lyssa’s rare starlight magic to nurture dormant guvre eggs. The eggs hatch into two baby guvres named Clarke and Cassandra.
Tatianna and Clare study a portrait of Rennedawn’s first king, Julius Benedict Martin I, who looks identical to Trystan. They notice the storybook painted on the kitchen window sill.
Prisoner Calvin Warsen reveals that guvre venom unseals the window. Combining baby guvre venom with Lyssa’s starlight magic, the group opens the second storybook.
Magical smoke projects an ancient decree: a Core Healer’s duty is to destroy Rennedawn’s sickness, shown alongside Evie’s face and name. Horrified that she is marked as the land’s disease, Evie flees to Heart Village.
She hides at her cousin Helena’s theater, and Benedict’s spy Douglas sets the Deadlands Theater on fire with Evie trapped inside. Trystan charges through the flames to pull her out.
Trystan then reveals that the magic Benedict stole from him was Core Healer magic, not dark magic. The magic inside Evie’s dagger was Trystan’s original healing magic, meant to protect her rather than execute her.
In Massacre Manor, librarian Mo reveals herself as Moira, the embodiment of Fate. She puts Clare, Blade, Alexander, Tatianna, and Becky through psychological trials built from their deepest memories and desires.
Clare witnesses the night Griffin, Nura, Renna, and Benedict transferred dark magic from baby Evie into Trystan. Alexander admits he orchestrated his own frog transformation as a boy to escape his royal duties.
Trystan and Evie recover the stained-glass window fragments buried in the Garden of Rennedawn beside Arthur Maverine’s grave. Prince Alexander then betrays them, holding a blade to Evie’s throat and taking the anchor key.
Alexander delivers the key to King Benedict, believing a reality reset is the only way to save everyone. Benedict, Destiny, and Griffin Sage, now Chancellor, corner Trystan, Evie, and Gideon in a dandelion field.
Benedict stabs Gideon with a poisoned blade and refuses a cure unless the curse incantation is spoken. Unable to let her brother die, Evie channels her dark magic into the storybook and recites the words.
The curse sweeps across the land and tears Evie and Trystan apart as they reach for each other. Two weeks later, the reset has taken hold.
Trystan is now Prince Trystan Benedict Martin, heir to Rennedawn’s throne and commander of the Valiant Guards, hunting “The Wicked Woman.” He corners a runaway carriage in Hickory Forest, and Evie Sage steps out with a dagger pointed at his nose.
Trystan’s memories of her are gone, but he feels an immediate, overwhelming attraction. Evie strings up his guards by their toes, slips the white key into his hand, and vanishes, leaving him mesmerized.
In the epilogue, set two weeks before the curse, Alexander Kingsley kills Trystan’s abusive mother, Amara Maverine, and offers employment to a newly freed Winnifred.
The installment ends on a cliffhanger.
