Alchemised Summary: The Full Story

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The story begins in 1789. Helena Marino is pulled from a stasis tank in New Paladia. The city is a stark place of silver streets and Ferron steel.

The Alchemy Tower is dark, and the sky is perpetually grey. Helena’s mind is broken by stasis fevers and interrogation drugs. She cannot remember the end of the war. The Undying regime has won, and she is their prisoner.

Helena is taken to Spirefell, the iron-filigreed estate of Kaine Ferron. Kaine is the High Reeve and a general for the Undying. He is a cold man with silver eyes.

His duty is to pull lost memories from her head. This process is painful. Under the watch of a cruel doctor named Stroud, Helena is kept in isolation.

She hates Kaine for commanding dead servants and for using her capture as bait for any surviving rebels.

Slowly, the past returns. Four years earlier, Helena was an alchemy student from Etras. She served as a healer for the Order of the Eternal Flame, a Resistance led by the Holdfast family.

They were losing a brutal war against the Undying, who are led by the High Necromancer, Morrough.

The Resistance discovered that Kaine Ferron, the heir of the iron guild, wanted to spy for them. His motive was personal vengeance for his mother’s death.

Kaine had one condition. Helena Marino must be his only contact.

The Resistance strategist, Jan Crowther, saw Kaine’s obsession as a tool. He ordered Helena to use her forbidden vivimancy to manipulate Kaine’s emotions and ensure his loyalty.

Helena began meeting Kaine secretly at an abandoned outpost.

Their relationship did not go as planned. Kaine was arrogant and dangerous. But Helena discovered a complex alchemical array carved into his back.

It bound a soul-talisman inside him, which made him an Undying enforcer but was slowly killing him. Instead of manipulating him, Helena used her healing powers to repair his body.

The forced proximity turned into real devotion. Kaine became obsessively protective of her.

The war reached its climax in 1787. Luc Holdfast, the young Resistance leader, was captured.

Helena joined a rescue mission. She found Luc in the flood cathedral, but he was already lost. Morrough was actually Cetus, an ancient alchemist and the brother of Orion Holdfast.

Cetus had bound a piece of his soul inside Luc to use him as a puppet. Luc begged Helena to kill him, and she did. Before he died, Luc made her promise to protect Lila Bayard, his pregnant paladin primary.

Helena was captured when the city fell. To protect Kaine, she used her own vivimancy to lock away her memories of their relationship. The secret was hidden in her own mind.

Back in 1789, the Undying has a plan. They are forcing Helena to carry a child. The baby is a girl, and it is Kaine’s. The regime wants to use her as a vessel for Morrough.

Helena’s memories continue to resurface. She finally realizes that Kaine was the spy and that he has spent the last two years searching for her while pretending to serve Morrough.

Kaine’s cruel father, Atreus Ferron, is now a resurrected pyromancer lich.

He suspects Kaine’s loyalty. Atreus corners Helena and burns her back to force the truth from her. Helena refuses to break, protecting Kaine’s secret even as she screams.

Kaine arrives to find his father torturing her. He uses his animancy to pin Atreus down and break his bones. At that moment, a young vivimancer named Ivy Purnell arrives.

She brings Morrough’s severed right arm, which contains the phylactery that controls Kaine’s soul. Ivy’s sister, a necrothrall, had ripped it off Morrough. Kaine is finally free.

Kaine decides to stay behind to cover Helena’s escape. He puts her on his winged chimaera, Amaris, and sends her south. Behind her, Spirefell goes up in flames.

The news reports that Kaine, Atreus, and his wife Aurelia died in the blaze.

Helena flies to the Etrasian islands. She reunites with Lila Bayard, who is living in hiding with her son. Months later, Kaine joins them.

Helena gives birth to their daughter, Enid, who has Kaine’s silver eyes. The book ends with the characters scarred by war.

An ordinary life feels unreal. But Helena and Kaine choose to face the future together, holding hands.

Memorable Quotes from Alchemised

“Helena wondered sometimes if she still had eyes. The darkness surrounding her never ended.”

“But we have to win this war; we can’t make choices because we want a certain story to tell later. There’s too much at stake.”

“Don’t die, Marino. I might miss you.”

“I have warned you, if something happens to you, I will personally raze the Eternal Flame. That isn’t a threat. It is a promise. Consider your survival as much a necessity to the Resistance as Holdfast’s. If you die, I will kill every single one of them.”

“I memorised yours, too,” he said after a moment, and then sighed, looking away. “I should have known—the moment I looked into your eyes, I should have known I would never win against you.”

“I don’t think that an ordinary life will ever feel real for either of us.”

“Through wreckage, and piles of corpses, through prisons and mines and laboratories, and across a damned continent. I looked everywhere—except the one place that mattered.”

  1. The pictures of Helena are whitewashed and inaccurate. She’s a woman of color and needs to be represented that way.
