Empire of the Damned Summary: Blood, Ash, and Broken Faith

SPOILER WARNING: This section recounts the full story, including the ending.

The story of Empire of the Damned is framed as a double interrogation.

Gabriel de León and his resurrected sister Celene Castia are prisoners of the Undying Empress Margot Chastain. Under the recording pen of Jean-François Chastain, they describe what happened after the massacre at San Michon Cathedral.

Gabriel has rescued Dior Lachance from the Silver Order, which tried to sacrifice her to end the Daysdeath. Dior’s blood can heal wounds or burn vampires.

Together with Celene and the duskdancer Phoebe á Dúnnsair, Gabriel flees toward Cairnhaem.

They hope the Esani elder Jènoah knows how to use Dior’s blood to bring back the sun. Along the way, Gabriel’s former apprentice Lachlan á Craeg tells them that Dún Maergenn, the capital of Ossway, has fallen to the Blood Dyvok under Nikita the Blackheart.

They also learn that Château Aveléne, home of Gabriel’s friends Aaron de Coste and Baptiste Sa-Ismael, is on fire.

At Aveléne, the companions find the estate ruined. Dyvok forces led by Kiara Dyvok and Kane Dyvok are loading children into wagon cages. After a battle, Gabriel frees the children.

He then deceives Lachlan into escorting them back to San Michon so Dior stays away from Lachlan’s strict holy vows.

Gabriel, Dior, Celene, and Phoebe press on to Cairnhaem. They find Jènoah has already committed suicide. On the citadel bridge, the Forever King’s twin daughters Alba and Aléne Voss corner them.

Phoebe is seemingly killed, Celene lets Gabriel fall into a freezing abyss, and Dior is captured by the Dyvok.

Dior is taken to Dún Maergenn. During the journey, she learns that the Untamed drink the blood of captured wealdlings called duskdancers. This blighted blood gives them near-invincible strength.

The blood is taken from Phoebe’s long-lost husband Connor, who is kept as a thrall.

At court, Dior is forced to serve Lilidh Dyvok, the Heartless. Secretly, Dior works with a maid called Worm, who is actually Reyne á Maergenn, the youngest daughter of Niamh Nineswords.

Together they use Dior’s blood to free palace thralls.

Meanwhile, Phoebe rescues Gabriel from the snowy chasm. They travel to Redwatch and then into the Moonsthrone Mountains to seek help from the Highland clans.

Gabriel and Phoebe convince the clans at the Wintermoot to break their treaty and march on Dún Maergenn.

Inside the palace, the thralled spy Isla á Cuinn betrays Dior’s conspiracy to Nikita. Nikita forces the conspirators to turn on one another in a sadistic bloodbath.

Kiara Dyvok, cast aside by Nikita, betrays him and frees Dior and Reyne.

The Highland army and Lachlan’s returning Silversaints breach the gates. Baptiste confronts his thralled lover Aaron and temporarily breaks the mind-control. Baptiste then bludgeons Nikita to ashes with a silversteel hammer.

Beneath the cathedral, Lilidh corners Dior and Reyne. They fight back with Niamh’s legendary blade bathed in Dior’s blood. Connor kills Lilidh’s wolf, but Lilidh rips out Connor’s heart.

Dior tears her own hand off a silver dagger, losing several fingers, and decapitates Lilidh.

Lilidh bursts into holy flames. The Dyvok are destroyed, but the victory is desolate. Reyne dies in Dior’s arms. Connor dies, leaving Phoebe widowed again. Dior’s body is laid in state with her left hand mangled.

Gabriel and Celene then discover the deepest secret of the Redeemer. He did not promise salvation. He created the five vampire bloodlines.

In the final twist, the dead Dior opens her eyes inside her silver-guarded marble coffin, reborn into the dark world.
