An Arcane Study of Stars Summary: Dark Academia Romance

What Happens When Desire Becomes Magic

Cygnus University sits beneath the Cygnus Rift in the Realm of Knowledge, a cathedral of scholarship where human desire is refined into magic and every discipline answers to its own god.

Getting there takes more than talent.

For twenty-three-year-old Claudia Jolicoeur, it takes a bargain with something ancient, clawed, and hungry.

An Arcane Study of Stars by Sydney J. Shields follows Claudia from a rain-soaked northern English town to that occult campus, where she studies a denounced discipline and conceals the terms of the deal that carried her through the door.

Scholars compete for ascension, a century of murdered celestial witches goes unsolved, and a rival named Cassius MacLeod refuses to leave her alone.

What Claudia learns about the stars shapes everything she is willing to trade for them.

TL;DR: The Quick Summary

A gothic academic fantasy about a bargain, a forbidden subject, and the price of rewriting fate.

  • The setup: Claudia gains entry to Cygnus University through a deal with Dorian Ship, a monstrous figure who appears in her nightmares and claims to be a trapped scholar.
  • The bargain: He builds her a Doorway into the school. In exchange, she must learn the language of the stars and break the cage holding him.
  • The campus: Five magical disciplines, five patron gods, and one abandoned subject — Astrologia, denounced a century ago when its god vanished.
  • The complications: A bitter rivalry with Cassius MacLeod, a hidden diary from a dead student, and a serial killer targeting celestial witches.
  • The truth: Dorian Ship is not a scholar. He is Sidarphion, the God of Stars and Nightmares, and his bargain has killed before.
  • Central themes: ambition as fuel, rhetoric as weaponry, grief as obsession, and whether destiny can be rewritten in blood.

An Arcane Study of Stars Summary

Spoiler warning: this section covers the plot from beginning to end, including the ending.

Part I: The God of Stars and Nightmares

Claudia Jolicoeur lives in Kulden, a cold northern town where her father’s gambling debts have stripped the family of its standing. Her mother, Elise Roe, died ten years earlier after predicting her own death by reading the stars.

Claudia buys a thin black book from the Wanderer’s Wonders bookshop and applies to Cygnus University under Astrologia. High Sage Gieffroy Triche rejects her, writing that Astrologia was denounced a century ago when the star god Sidarphion abandoned the school.

On the eve of a betrothal she does not want, Claudia drinks on the roof and falls into a nightmare. A silver-haired, clawed creature calling himself Dorian Ship bites her neck and tastes her glowing starry blood.

He offers a bargain: he will open a Doorway into Cygnus if she learns the forbidden language of stars and sets him free.

Claudia steps through the blood-and-fire Doorway and arrives blood-soaked and mocked by the student body. Triche admits her late into Rhetoric, pairing her with the smug top scholar Cassius MacLeod.

She befriends a Scientia student named Alistair Salone, known as Bones, and finds diary entries left by Odette Dufort, a star pupil recently dead.

The diary describes a serial killer who has hunted celestial witches for a century. Claudia blackmails her Rhetoric professor, Lamour, a hidden celestial witch, into teaching her forbidden celestial magic in the locked observatory.

Part II: Star-Crossed

Claudia’s rivalry with Cassius turns intimate through ritualized academic power play that the school calls luxos. She uncovers his family papers on Dracoemagyl, or Gray, the unascended sixth god destroyed by Sidarphion.

Cassius’s bloodline carries a curse of silence that blocks him from communing directly with Malevimus, the God of Wit and Secrets. Claudia weaponizes that knowledge in a formal debate on whether gods can punish one another, defeating him publicly.

At a university ball, Claudia casts a celestial divination on Cassius’s arm in the observatory. The stars tell her he is destined to die. Triche catches them, suspends Cassius’s apprenticeship, and places them both in detention. Claudia lies to Lamour to hide her magic.

During her bonding ritual in the chapel, Malevimus warns her directly: Dorian lies.

Part III: Dreams and Tragedies

Claudia finishes Odette’s diary and understands the truth. Dorian Ship is Sidarphion, and his earlier bargain with Odette required Cassius’s death. When Odette resisted, the bargain killed her.

Claudia studies Odette’s final notes and identifies a hybrid discipline called stellinguistic magic, which merges Rhetoric with Astrologia. She and Lamour agree to meet in the observatory at midnight to unbind Sidarphion from his celestial trap.

Claudia arrives to find Lamour hanging over a blood-drawn pentagram with his throat cut. High Sage Triche stands over him holding the grimoire.

Triche reveals he is the serial killer, having murdered celestial witches for a century to consume their blood and magic and replace Sidarphion as a god. He poisons Claudia with a celestial spell of Crater and Virgo that slowly turns her blood and soul to stone, then locks her in to die.

Part IV: Death and Flowers

Bleeding against the wall, Claudia chants her first true stellinguistic spell, sending her snake Bishop to find help. Alistair, Cassius, Angel, and Marcherie arrive, along with Odette Dufort, who is alive and has been hiding in the school’s secret corridors.

The six scholars lure Triche to Starlake, a body of pure dream essence, and cast a joint spell combining Cassiopeia and Eridanus to drown him. As the lake rises, Triche slashes Cassius’s throat, killing him instantly.

Claudia carves twenty-three cuts of the Dracoemagyl constellation into her own skin, burning it out completely. The sky cracks open and Sidarphion falls in white fire, crashing into Starlake and obliterating Triche.

Sidarphion emerges in divine form and offers Claudia a final bargain: he will restore Cassius’s life if she gives herself to him every night in the Realm of Nightmares. She accepts. Cassius breathes again and the star-curse lifts from his eye.

In the epilogue, sunlight returns to Cygnus. Each night, Claudia descends past an obsidian throne and takes her seat beside Sidarphion as the dark queen of stars and nightmares.

Quotes

“Truth ceases to exist when it is not believed.”

“Understand that the magic we teach at Cygnus is nothing more than pure human desire refined into power. Celestial, linguistic, musical, mathematical, and floramantic magic—those are all mediums for channeling hedonistic urges. Desire is what makes a witch.”

“It is the rival, not the lover, that elicits our strongest passions.”

“If ignorance is bliss, intelligence is madness. Claudia will choose the latter every time.”

“Distinguish between desire and desperation: The former honors the true self, the latter flees from it. One is power, and the other is fear.”

“He gets you during the day. I get you at night.”
