Blood Bound Summary: Cursed Covenant by Ellis Hunter

Blood Bound: A Duel Where Both Heirs Must Live or Die

Two kingdoms share one dying source of magic, and an ancient contract decides who controls it. Every generation, the firstborn heir of the witch queendom of Arturea must fight the firstborn heir of dragon-ruled Vatra to the death.

Blood Bound by Ellis Hunter opens with that obligation already in motion. Witch princess Astrid Nachstern sails south expecting to face a prince. Instead, she meets Skylar, a street performer with no idea she carries royal blood.

The novel follows both women as a magical tether forces them to survive together while the countdown to their mandated duel runs out.

Readers of romantic fantasy who prefer slow-burn tension, political intrigue, and dragon lore will find familiar ground here.

The book suits those drawn to dual perspectives, morally complicated courts, and heroines bound to each other against their will.

TL;DR: Blood, Bonds, and a Duel to the Death

  • The setup: An unbreakable Covenant forces Arturea’s firstborn heir to duel Vatra’s firstborn heir for control of the Heart, the continent’s only magic source.
  • The twist: Vatra’s true firstborn is not Prince Zryan but Skylar, an orphaned blade-juggler and the king’s illegitimate daughter.
  • The tether: A Blood Binding links Astrid and Skylar’s lives, so neither can die before the duel without killing the other.
  • The secrets: Someone is draining conscripted magic users to power the kingdom, and the Heart itself is failing.
  • The core themes: Bound fate, systemic exploitation, grief, duty versus choice, and found family.
  • The ending: No death, a soulmate bond, and a portal into an unknown world.

Blood Bound Summary

Spoiler warning: the following section covers the full plot, including the ending.

Astrid Nachstern is twenty-four and the only heir of Arturea, a frozen northern realm slowly dying from a magical blight. In the Isfjell mountains she survives an assassination attempt that leaves her arm broken and her spellcasting blocked by trauma.

Her father died shielding her years earlier, and that memory still stops her from casting in combat. Her bodyguard and closest friend Jessa, along with Jessa’s fox familiar Quincy, keeps her alive through the attack.

Arturea is bound by the Covenant, signed five centuries ago, which requires its firstborn heir to duel Vatra’s firstborn heir to the death. The winner’s kingdom controls the Heart, the continent’s sole source of ambient magic.

Astrid, her mother Queen Gwen, Jessa, and her snow-panther familiar Bastet cross the Asur Sea to Vatra. There they enter Talrok and the royal fortress known as The Rok.

Far from the palace, Skylar earns her living as a blade-juggler in a traveling troupe run by Aldric, a manipulative Illusionist. She has spent her life believing she is Bloodless, raised by a mother who warned her to hide her nature.

That mother was murdered by royal Dreki soldiers fifteen years before. When Skylar’s companion Cam, a grade-one Projector, vanishes, she searches for him and is betrayed by Aldric, who sells her to royal agents.

At a welcoming banquet, Queen Gwen drags in a captured, bound Skylar and reveals the truth. Skylar is King Zachary’s illegitimate firstborn, born of a brief affair, and a blood spell confirms her de Veras lineage.

Under the Covenant, legitimacy does not matter. Skylar becomes Vatra’s rightful champion, and Prince Zryan is stripped of his standing as heir.

To stop either side from murdering the opposing heir early, the Custodian performs the Blood Binding. Astrid and Skylar’s blood is merged, linking their deaths so that harm to one mirrors in the other.

Over six weeks, both women train and navigate court politics. Skylar is drilled by Axel, a noble Reader and Influencer assigned to guard her, and endures brutal sessions with royal Blooded fighters.

On the dragon island of Isla Draka, Skylar suffers a violent magical explosion on the cliffs. Axel realizes what she is: an Exhauster, a rare and feared order that absorbs life force and ambient magic.

Exhausters are traditionally hunted or enslaved, as the chained royal executioner Ezra demonstrates. Meanwhile, Astrid sneaks into the royal library and the King’s private office.

Using the blood-tether to bypass the King’s wards, Skylar helps Astrid reach the Blooded Register. Inside, they confirm Cam was conscripted under a designation called “Champion.”

Romantic entanglements develop in parallel. Astrid and Zryan share a magnetic pull and discover he secretly works with rebels rescuing conscripted citizens.

Skylar and Axel lower their defenses and find a shared history of childhood loss. Neither bond is simple, and both carry political risk.

At the Masked Ball, an assassin attacks with a guided metal spear. Jessa acts as Astrid’s decoy and is fatally impaled alongside Quincy.

Grief unlocks Astrid’s dormant power, and Bastet transforms from a small black cat into a horse-sized winged panther. Skylar exhausts a second spear in midair and chases the killer to the cliffs.

There, Astrid amplifies Skylar’s power so she can drain the assassin’s life. Before dying, he admits he was hired from inside the castle.

After Jessa’s funeral, Astrid performs a blood-locator spell with Cam’s ring. The ring floats straight upward, meaning Cam is already dead.

Skylar rides Zryan’s silver ice dragon Mjolnir into the clouds to mourn. The two women then track conscription carriages to a subterranean cavern system.

Inside, they find hundreds of conscripted Blooded trapped in tree-bark cocoons. Their magic and life force are being drained to power Vatra’s Vitalas grid because the Heart is failing.

At the dragon egg plinth, Skylar touches an ancient bronze egg and her internal fire cracks it open. Kaida, a rare Fire Elemental dragon, hatches, marking Skylar as the prophesied Chosen Heir.

On the day of the duel, the Blood Binding is removed and both women are sealed inside an arena cage. They are ordered to fight until “two become one.”

Skylar, wanting Astrid to live and rule, deliberately provokes her. As their blood hits the arena floor, the mate mark of the golden rising sun and silver panther wing flares on both foreheads.

They are not romantic partners but magical soulmates, two halves of one essence. Because two have become one, the cage shatters without either woman dying.

Queen Ottilie’s guards and a royal Flame Thrower attack. Astrid casts Forsvare, rebounding the fire, and Queen Gwen’s Ulvene forces clash with King Zachary’s soldiers.

Astrid, Skylar, Zryan, and Bastet retreat into the Heart’s inner sanctum, where they find Zryan chained between marble pillars. Ottilie arrives with her elite guard.

She is a Prime Nullifier and the true mastermind behind the assassinations and the draining of the Blooded. She explains that the original Heart was stolen centuries ago by the founders Aeloria and Nyx, who were secretly soulmates.

The Heart was taken into a parallel world, and Skylar’s silver hairpin, passed down from her mother, is actually an ancient world-slashing wand. Ottilie intends to use it to open a portal and retrieve the real Heart.

When Axel threatens Astrid’s life to keep Skylar compliant, Skylar stabs him through the throat with the hairpin, killing him. Zryan breaks his chains and Mjolnir smashes through the glass dome above.

Mid-battle, a shadow-wielding dragon rider seizes Skylar and the wand. The stranger slices a glowing rift into the sky and pulls Skylar and Zryan through it.

Astrid refuses to abandon her soulmate. She picks up a second silver wand left behind, channels her Amplifying magic, and slashes the rift open again.

Astrid and Bastet leap through, landing in a dense tropical jungle beneath two moons. The novel ends with her determined to find Skylar and Zryan in an unknown world.
