Ruinous Creatures Summary: Phoenix Magic and Rebellion

A Single Touch in a Valley of Magical Beasts

Polishing the dead is routine work in the valley — until a Keeper’s bare cheek touches a fossilized phoenix skull no one has seen in centuries.

In Ruinous Creatures, Jessi Cole Jackson places Adela, a thirty-three-year-old assistant matcher, at the center of that one impulsive moment and follows the shockwave outward.

The novel moves between two worlds: a warded valley where Keepers care for unicorns, dragons, and kelpies, and Insborough, a stratified city where religious Orders wear creature skulls to channel magic and collect tithes.

Told in alternating first-person chapters, it tracks the fallout of a single touch and the bond forming between Adela and a Huntress novitiate named Kian.

  • Kian is a Huntress novitiate and secret smuggler working to destroy the Orders’ magic monopoly.

Ruinous Creatures Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: the following section describes the plot, including the ending.

In an isolated valley, Keepers raise magical creatures and clean their skulls after death. Those skulls are matched to novitiates from three Orders — the Huntress, the Pupil, and the Spinner — who wear them as masks to channel magic. Adela, thirty-three, works as an assistant matcher under the blunt head matcher Bartholomew.

Adela hears whispers from dead creatures inside her head, a trait she hides. While preparing for an incoming delegation of novitiates, she finds two fossilized phoenix skulls dusted with gold on a high shelf. She lifts her protective mask and rests her bare cheek against one of them.

A violent pulse of raw magic erupts across the valley. Living creatures panic, and wild magic ripples through the ecosystem. That night, two pet dragons owned by Bartholomew go berserk.

One dragon, Gilcriss, kills and partly devours Bartholomew before the other, Enkidus, kills it. A rare kelpie named Duschwa dies of wounds far from her river. Adela understands that her impulsive act caused all of it.

The valley council, led by the elder Petra and Adela’s father Oscar, installs Adela as head matcher for the coming ceremony. She selects Beadda, the younger sister of her best friend Cecelia, as her assistant.

In the city of Insborough, Kian serves as a novitiate of the Order of the Huntress. He secretly belongs to a family of thieves and smugglers led by his Aunt Ujvala, and he joined the Order fifteen years earlier to avenge his executed parents.

His goal is to destroy the creature skulls that let the priesthood hoard wealth and control politics. High Priestess Sarai, who wears a diamond-studded unicorn skull, leads blindfolded novitiates into the valley for the matching ceremony.

On the forest trek, the rogue dragon Enkidus attacks and kills the senior priest Brother Thad. Arriving in the village, Kian sees Adela galloping out of the mist on Etana, a glowing pregnant unicorn, and is immediately captivated.

At the welcome feast, the attraction between Adela and Kian becomes mutual, and they meet in a pantry. The next day, during the matching ceremony inside the matching hut, Kian steps forward.

Sarai expects him to take the newly dead dragon’s skull, but the phoenix skull on the top shelf draws him instead. It chooses him. When Kian touches Adela’s cheek and unmasks her, the second phoenix skull snaps onto her face.

Unlike ordinary matches, the skull fuses to Adela’s cheekbones and forehead and will not come off. Three magical giant felines called cath palugs then invade the village square and attack children.

During the fight, Kian’s ex-lover Ulric, matched with the dragon skull, unleashes a torrent of dragon fire that incinerates the beasts. In the library, Cecelia studies forgotten manuscripts and learns that phoenixes always exist as balanced pairs.

One half is Destruction and the other Rebirth. Cecelia concludes that Adela and Kian share two halves of a single soul bond, and Adela realizes her magic is the destructive half.

Kian steals dragon fire from funeral pyres and burns the matching hut in a rainstorm, destroying every stored skull in the valley. In the forest, Etana goes into traumatic labor after being mauled by Enkidus.

Adela reaches the dying unicorn and uses her destruction magic to end Etana’s pain, and the phoenix skull finally drops from her face. Oscar cuts the foal from Etana’s womb, and Kian channels rebirth magic for the first time to revive the dead hybrid alicorn, named Tani.

With no skulls left, Sarai orders the delegation back to Insborough and takes Adela and Kian along. Adela is disgusted by the Order’s opulence beside the poverty of ordinary citizens.

Sarai tests Adela’s power in an abandoned lot by threatening the caged Tani. Provoked into rage, Adela vaporizes a three-story wooden building completely.

Adela then joins Kian and Aunt Ujvala in a heist that frees Tani from the temple stables and smuggles the foal back to the valley. In the valley library, Adela communes with Etana’s cleaned skull and notices a murmur that matches a sound she heard inside the Insborough temple.

Back in the city, she makes Kian lead her down a locked staircase beneath the temple. They find a vast subterranean crypt holding thousands of creature skulls hoarded over three centuries — the reason magic has been fading across the land.

Sarai ambushes them with guards, having captured Oscar and Cecelia. She gives Adela a choice: kill Kian with her destruction magic, or watch her father and friend tortured while the Orders destroy the valley.

Kian tells Adela he loves her and surrenders to her magic. In front of the assembled priesthood, Adela channels destruction into his chest and strikes him down.

As Kian’s body falls, Sarai laughs in triumph. Adela’s grief becomes fury, and she turns her destruction magic on the High Priestess, incinerating Sarai’s unicorn skull and reducing the masks of the corrupt priests to ash.

Adela orders the barriers around the crypt dropped and, using her matcher authority, invites servants, novitiates, and townspeople inside. She matches the remaining skulls to ordinary citizens who vow to use magic to serve their communities.

Moments later, Kian opens his eyes and sits up, fully restored. Because the two share a phoenix soul bond, he cannot truly die while Adela lives; destroying his body was the catalyst for his rebirth.

With Cecelia, Ulric, and their allies, Adela and Kian dismantle the Orders’ hierarchy in Insborough. They establish community governance, public health initiatives, and shared resources, then transport the remaining crypt skulls back to the valley.

Keepers and priests gather as the skulls burn on a massive pyre, releasing three centuries of trapped magic into the earth. The valley surges with new life.

Finally, Adela and Kian remove their own phoenix skulls and throw them into the flames. Two living phoenixes rise from the ashes, restoring an extinct species to the world.

Quotes from Ruinous Creatures

For those facing ruin, carrying the flame of hope.

There is joy and pain, all tangled together within me. And all through it, want.

I have at last seen the true visage of the goddess, and her name, apparently, is Adela.

Bare of wealth or warmth… With empty hands, prepared to toil for goodness… Clearheaded, with eyes that search for truth and a tongue that speaks of both justice and mercy.

If one half of the phoenix is destruction and the other is rebirth, my new fate is clear, and it’s what I’ve always feared. I am destruction, and there’s no escaping my ruin.

You’re so much more. You’re willing to do whatever is required, even if you abhor it.

Loving you is so much sweeter than any vengeance.
