Kaz Brekker is snatched off the street and brought before merchant Jan Van Eck, who offers a fortune to break into the Ice Court—a Fjerdan fortress no one has ever breached.

The target is Bo Yul-Bayur, the creator of jurda parem, a drug that lets Grisha like Heartrenders control dozens of minds at once before the user dies.

Kaz builds a crew. Inej Ghafa, the Wraith, is the spy who can vanish into shadows. Jesper Fahey is a Zemeni sharpshooter with a gambling habit and a hidden Grisha talent.

Nina Zenik, a Ravkan Heartrender, is the key to keeping Matthias Helvar under control. Matthias, a former Fjerdan witchhunter, is broken out of Hellgate prison because only he knows the Ice Court’s inner workings. To save the crew, Nina takes a dose of jurda parem herself. Her power explodes, forcing the soldiers to turn on each other, but the drug leaves her permanently altered.
