Between Tides & Thunder Summary: Enemies to Lovers Romantasy

TL;DR: A Frozen Kingdom, A Forced Betrothal, An Unlikely Escort

Two kingdoms have bled each other dry for decades. The ceasefire hinges on a single marriage, and Princess Mayah of Tundrayn is the price.

Between Tides & Thunder by Leena Kazak follows a royal healer who crosses into enemy territory escorted by the very commander blamed for thousands of her people’s deaths.

What begins as a political errand becomes a month-long trek through rebel-held wilderness, thunderstorms, and shared grief. Mayah carries a secret she has never told anyone. Zevayr carries his own.

Kazak builds a frozen, resource-starved world where nonwielders fight and die for kingdoms that deny them basic dignity. The novel’s central question is direct: what happens when the person you were raised to hate is the only one who understands you?

  • Premise: A Tundrayni princess is promised to the Crown Prince of Arbinj to seal a fragile peace, but his feared half-brother arrives as proxy and ends up marrying her instead.
  • The journey: An ambush destroys the escort convoy, forcing Mayah and Zevayr to walk to the capital together across war-torn land.
  • The betrayal: Mayah is secretly working for her father’s plot to poison the Arbinji royal family, even as her feelings for Zevayr deepen.
  • The twist: King Tormik is a hidden stormwielder who murdered Mayah’s mother and manufactured her lifelong fear of storms.
  • The ending: Mayah kills her father, saves Zevayr’s life, and rules both realms alongside him as reforming monarchs.
  • Core themes: class oppression, inherited trauma, parental deception, and healing across enemy lines.

Between Tides & Thunder Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot, the reveals, and the ending.

Part I: The Betrothal and the Wilderness Journey

Princess Mayah works as a royal healer in Tundrayn, a frozen territory where fish are scarce and nonwielders starve on the front lines.

She lost her nonwielder mother Meerah at six years old, and her childhood friends Sura and Tumaas were sent to the border and reported dead.

With the treasury collapsing and rebel attacks rising, King Tormik arranges a treaty sealed by Mayah’s marriage to Crown Prince Faramir of Arbinj. At the betrothal ceremony, Faramir never appears.

Instead, Prince Zevayr arrives as proxy. He is the “Dark Commander,” a master stormwielder, and the man responsible for thousands of Tundrayni casualties. He places the ring on her finger himself.

Shortly after the convoy departs, a rebel bomb destroys the carriage and kills Zevayr’s soldiers. Mayah, terrified of thunder since childhood, faints. Zevayr pulls her out and the two are left with no escort.

They spend roughly a month walking to Arbinj through rebel-controlled wilderness. Mayah learns that Zevayr is not a mindless monster but a grieving warrior who lost his friend Lev and his nonwielder adoptive mother Tairna.

Zevayr learns about Sura and Tumaas, and about the night an Arbinji stormwielder killed Mayah’s mother. During natural storms, he holds her and grounds her until the fear passes.

Along the route, they help nonwielders in need, including a boy named Georg and his mother, for whom Zevayr summons rain to fill a dry well.

Part II: The Palace Marriage and the Secret Coup

At the Arbinji capital of Faerahzar, King Varad rewrites the contract out of spite. Mayah must marry Zevayr, not Faramir. The wedding takes place in the palace gardens.

As the new princess, Mayah heals patients in the palace infirmary and compares Arbinji’s luxury against the suffering of its nonwielders, who are traded and worked like property.

She is also still loyal to her father’s plan. In the underground palace tunnels, she meets Daak, Captain of the Tundrayni Guard, her former instructor and former lover.

Daak supplies her with toxinnia poison and wormbark oil to wipe out the Arbinji royal family at the Equinox Festival. Her growing love for Zevayr makes her hesitate.

Zevayr leaves for the border to handle rebel incursions. He returns early, finds Mayah meeting Daak in the tunnels, and uncovers the assassination plot.

Heartbroken, he executes Daak in front of her and takes her prisoner back to the border.

Part III: The Truth Revealed and the Rebellion

On the road, an Arbinji earthwielder named Sulon tries to assault Mayah. Zevayr kills Sulon and his men to stop him.

At the Tundrayni border outpost, General Sorka’s forces capture and bind Zevayr in iron chains. King Tormik arrives to confront him personally.

During the confrontation, lightning strikes out of a cloudless sky. The bolt exposes the truth: Tormik is a secret stormwielder.

Mayah understands then that her father murdered Meerah two decades earlier to hide his forbidden dual power, and that he engineered the monthly thunderstorms of her childhood to break her spirit.

She uses her own hidden waterwielding ability, unlocked through ice manipulation, to pick Zevayr’s locks. Together, her water and his lightning cut through Tormik’s forces, and the king flees.

In Rebel Territory, Mayah and Zevayr reach the Rebellion’s main base. There she finds Tairna alive and leading the Rebellion, and Sura and Tumaas alive and fighting.

Tairna confirms Tormik’s crimes and lays out a plan to depose both tyrant kings. Mayah and Zevayr reconcile and confess their love for each other.

Part IV: The Climax and the Epilogue

Arbinji forces attack the Rebellion base, and Tormik arrives seeking Mayah personally. During the battle, he hurls an ice spear at her.

Zevayr throws himself in front of the strike and takes it through the chest. Mayah uses her healing and waterwielding to extract the spear and regenerate his heart and lungs.

Reinvigorated, she channels her full power and kills Tormik. In the same conflict, King Varad is overthrown by the Rebellion.

Three months later, Mayah and Zevayr rule Arbinj as king and queen. They reform laws to protect nonwielders, establish wielder exchanges, and build peace.

They travel to Tundrayn, where General Sorka and the Tundrayni council submit to Queen Mayah and King Zevayr. Twin ice thrones are presented in the Great Hall, and the two realms are united.
