Harmless Women Summary: A Feminist Thriller on the Run
Harmless Women by Rebecca Sharpe: A Heist That Goes Wrong
A cyber-thief in Geneva targets a burned-out wealth manager in Bristol. The plan is clean: sedate her, drain her accounts, alter her face, and vanish.
But Harmless Women by Rebecca Sharpe turns that premise into something messier.
A body appears in a bedroom.
A cleaner screams.
Two women who should be enemies end up hiking 150 miles across England together, with police, a tabloid frenzy, and a grieving mother closing in.
The novel blends psychological suspense, dark comedy, and feminist crime fiction, with South Asian folk mythology threaded through its pages.

Harmless Women Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the plot, including the ending.
Part One: The Heist and the Body
Avalon Dale runs her operation out of Geneva. She picks targets she considers corrupt and strips them of their money, then alters their appearance to slow down investigators.
Her next mark is Primrose Meath, a 30-year-old wealth manager at ICJ Capital in Bristol. Prim works seventy-hour weeks to fund her househusband Ruben’s lifestyle and her father’s Alzheimer’s care.
Then Prim finds explicit messages on Ruben’s phone. She confronts him, throws her phone at him, and drives off toward what she thinks is a yoga retreat.
The directions lead her to a crumbling cottage in Gloucestershire instead. Avalon sedates her, drains her accounts, remortgages the house, and moves the money into Middle Eastern and Swiss accounts.
She also pays off Prim’s father’s care home years in advance. To buy time before police connect the theft to a missing woman, she shaves Prim’s head and injects fillers into her cheeks, lips, and chin.
Avalon then drives to Prim’s Clifton Wood townhouse to destroy digital records. In an upstairs bedroom, she finds Ruben’s body face-down on the carpet.
When Prim threw her phone, he lost his balance and fell backward onto a nail protruding from the wall. The wound was fatal.
The cleaner, Cara, walks in, sees the corpse, and screams that “Mrs. Meath” killed her husband. Avalon flees, and police begin searching for a bald woman in a white Fiesta.
Prim wakes in the cottage and sees her altered face in the mirror. Remembering Ruben bleeding, she runs into the woods instead of calling police.
Avalon spots officers at Bristol Airport looking for a shaven-headed woman. She realizes her cover is gone and tracks Prim through the countryside.
When they meet, Prim learns her fortune is gone. But Prim is holding Avalon’s backpack, which contains her fake passports.
Two women travelling together attract less attention than one. They form a pragmatic alliance and hike east toward Suffolk to leave England by boat.
Meanwhile, in Glasswater, Suffolk, 60-year-old Bianca Lucetta returns from a foreign mortuary with private investigator Paulson. A decomposed female corpse is not her missing daughter Mira.
Bianca has not slept properly in years. She hallucinates the Churel, a vengeful female spirit from South Asian folklore, and becomes fixated on news about the fleeing women.
Part Two: The Trek and the Murder of Florian
Avalon and Prim cover over 150 miles through the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Cambridgeshire. They sleep under a plastic tarp, wash in cold public restrooms, and share what food they have.
News reports reveal that Ruben survived. He was hospitalized, recovered, and told media that Prim was kidnapped by a mystery woman, casting himself as the victim.
Prim also learns that part of the stolen money secured her father’s care home placement. In Northamptonshire, the women are stalked by Florian Smith, a 24-year-old predator and son of an MP.
Florian corners Prim near a wood, ties her limbs, and holds a knife to her throat. Avalon surrenders herself to him, offering her body to pull the blade away from Prim’s neck.
While Florian binds Avalon’s wrists with his belt, Prim frees herself. She grabs a heavy rock and strikes his head until he stops moving.

Part Three: The Coast and the Final Confrontation
Florian’s death triggers a national manhunt led by his mother, MP Laureline Smith. Avalon and Prim steal bicycles in Olney and ride toward the Suffolk coast.
Two cyclists intercept them on a country road — Achoja, a prison warden, and his sister, a police officer. Instead of arresting them, the siblings help.
Social media has exposed Florian as a serial rapist whose mother covered up his crimes. The hashtag #SelfDefenseNotMurder has turned the fugitives into folk heroes.
The siblings hand over padded shorts, barrier cream, and pedal clips, then ride the stolen bikes south toward Kent as a decoy.
Near the Suffolk border, Prim collapses from exhaustion and an infected knife wound. A driver named Gerel picks them up and takes them to a boatshed on the Glasswater coast.
Gerel provides antibiotics, bandages, and food. The boatshed belongs to Mira Lucetta, and the boat is named Sweet Lady.
Bianca’s breakdown reaches its peak. Hallucinating that the Churel is ordering her to save Prim, she searches the boatshed with a tranquilizer gun.
She sedates Avalon, binds her with duct tape, and drags the feverish Prim to her house. There she locks Prim in Mira’s old bedroom to make her a “new daughter.”
Avalon tears off the tape and charges to Bianca’s house. A retired GP named Brian Donall spots Prim at an upstairs window and calls the police.
Avalon confronts Bianca, who points a revolver at her. Bianca is then overwhelmed by visions of the Churel reflecting her role in enabling her husband Amos’s abuse.
She suffers a fatal cardiac collapse in the hallway as sirens approach. Gerel arrives, unlocks Prim, and tells police that Bianca died of natural causes.
Gerel claims she was the shaved-headed woman seen in the window. She hands Prim an unused British passport belonging to Mira.
Avalon and Prim launch Sweet Lady into the North Sea and sail toward the Netherlands. They intend to find Mira once they reach Europe.
