Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales Summary: The Full Story
Warning: Spoilers ahead. This section recounts the main events from beginning to end, including the ending.
On December 29, 1910, Emily and Wendell step through a faerie door on the Greek coastline. They enter the Silva Lupi, also called Where the Trees Have Eyes.
Wendell is actually Prince Liath, the rightful king, and he returns to reclaim his throne from his treacherous stepmother, Queen Arna.
Lord Taran, Wendell’s ancient uncle, immediately challenges him to a duel. Wendell is disarmed during the fight. Emily throws him her enchanted cloak, which contains a sewn fragment of the Veil. The sight terrifies Taran, who yields.
The group marches to the castle, but the transition is short. Queen Arna is in hiding, and she has infected the roots of the kingdom with a rotting magical corruption. Any common fae who touch it die or transform into wraiths. Lord Wherry and several guards become mindless translucent figures during an excursion to an infected yew grove.
Wendell’s blood temporarily purges the corruption. Emily realizes the structural law of folklore demands the reigning monarch’s death as the only permanent antidote.
Determined to save Wendell, she flees to Trinity College in Dublin. She works with Farris Rose and Ariadne to reconstruct a fragmentary tale called “King Macan’s Bees.”
The tale provides three geographic clues tied to Arna’s habits. A butter faerie supplies green, silver-striped island snail shells. Arna’s brownie hairdresser gives double-barbed thorns from lakeweed. An ancient boggart in the Gap of Wick trades white sailcloth with silver stitching for a banquet of iced pears.
Emily and Wendell boat onto Lake Silverlily and declare their marriage under old faerie traditions. The green snails bypass an invisible barrier, and they land on Queen Anne’s Isle. Inside a ruined keep, Arna commits suicide with a steel dagger.
This forces Wendell to drive the blade into his own chest to lift the spreading curse.
Devastated, Emily studies her grandfather Edgar Wilde’s journal. She learns that the Lady in the Crimson Cloak is the faerie who bewitched Edgar decades ago. The Lady reveals a “door to Death,” a spiritual limbo where faerie souls linger.
The oĂche sidhe housekeeper steps into the shadow cast by Wendell’s corpse. Shadow the Black Hound uses his deathly scent to navigate the shadow door. Together, the housekeeper and Shadow guide Wendell’s spirit back to the living world.
Wendell resurrects, but Arna’s spirit follows him back into a weakened body. Wendell banishes Arna by pushing her into a rift in the Veil.
Emily then realizes the “Smith variant” of the Macan tale predicts the second king will go mad from paranoia. To prevent this, she travels to Ljosland and tricks the Hidden King into opening the Veil.
She rescues Arna from ash-dwelling monsters and returns her to the living world.
Back in the Silva Lupi, Emily offers Arna mercy. She settles the former queen in a humble lakeside cottage under watchful spy-eyes. Wendell heals Shadow’s arthritis with a magical Word of power.
The couple returns to Cambridge to continue their academic lives, bound to the faerie realm they now rule.
Throughout the narrative, Heather Fawcett weaves Emily’s journal entries and footnotes into the action.
The third book in the Emily Wilde series closes with a new reign and an open horizon for future scientific discovery.
