Celestine Devereaux loses her fiancé, her freedom, and her name in a single night. Zagreus Vitale murders Adrian, abducts her, and forces her to sign a marriage contract by threatening her hospitalized father. Inside his cliffside mansion she fights a losing battle between grief and her body’s response to her captor.
Three facts shape the whole book:
- The claim is legal and total. The contract strips Celestine of autonomy and makes her Celestine Vitale.
- Her past is not what she was told. Her mother faked her death, and her childhood memories are missing.
- She is not a replacement. The final chapter reveals she is Selene Visconti, Zagreus’s original wife.
The book ends on a cliffhanger: Corvin Vitale abducts her, and Zagreus declares total war.

His Dark Claim Summary: The Full Story
Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot, the reveals, and the ending.
The novel opens at a high-society event where Celestine Devereaux receives a large check and expects an ordinary evening. Instead she finds her fiancé of four years, Adrian Valente, shot dead on a blood-stained carpet. Zagreus Vitale stands over the body with a jagged scar across his cheekbone and tells her he killed Adrian because Adrian was in his way.
Celestine is taken from the scene and wakes chained in a windowless concrete room inside Zagreus’s mansion. He presents her with a pre-drafted marriage contract that surrenders her legal autonomy and her finances to him.
She resists and attacks him with a shard of broken glass, and he disarms her without effort. He then reveals that her ailing father is hospitalized and implies the man’s life depends on her signature. Celestine signs and becomes Celestine Vitale.
Life in the mansion becomes a running psychological battle. Celestine mourns Adrian and vows to resist, while Zagreus uses dominance, intimidation, and calculated mind games to break down her defenses.
She experiences physical arousal despite her hatred, and the shame of that response becomes a central part of her daily life. She cannot reconcile her love for Adrian with what her body does under Zagreus’s hands.
Searching for leverage, Celestine explores the mansion and finds a hidden room behind a bookshelf holding locked boxes, ledgers, and photographs. When she confronts Zagreus, he tells her that her mother did not die of heart disease years ago. Diana Visconti faked her death and abandoned her daughter.

Zagreus later takes Celestine to an elite Syndicate gathering, where she is grouped with other captive wives, including Mishka and Nilah. Mishka explains the structure of the Syndicate and mentions “Lazarus,” a person or weapon created by Alexei Volkov and currently held by Osman Khalid.
Keeping a promise, Zagreus brings Celestine to Adrian’s grave. Overcome by grief, she collapses on the granite headstone and curses him, predicting he will die forgotten and alone.
Enraged, Zagreus forces her onto the tombstone and claims her there, making her speak his name and surrender her grief over Adrian’s body. The scene marks the point where her mourning is openly treated as something he intends to take from her.
An older woman named Isadora arrives at the mansion with her daughter, Leona. Isadora identifies herself as Celestine’s aunt and warns her that she is missing crucial childhood memories.
At a Syndicate event, a young man named Corvin, Zagreus’s estranged younger brother, confronts Celestine and repeatedly calls her “Selene.” Corvin taunts Zagreus in public and tells Celestine that Zagreus had a first wife who killed their parents, warning that history is repeating itself.
Celestine, who suffers from severe amnesia about her childhood, finds photographs of a younger, unscarred Zagreus with a pregnant woman. She also finds a diamond ring inscribed with the letter “C” and concludes she is a stand-in for a dead first wife.
During a stormy night she flees the mansion and runs into the forest surrounding the cliffside. An unseen figure covers her face with a chloroform rag, and as she loses consciousness the attacker whispers that she was better off dead, calling her sister-in-law. The kidnapper is Corvin.
Chapter 51 shifts to Zagreus’s perspective. Celestine is Selene Visconti, his original wife and the only woman he ever loved or bowed to. After a past tragedy left her with amnesia, he found her again and reclaimed her.
He had deliberately left the mansion doors unguarded during the party to bait Corvin and expose Syndicate traitors, using Celestine as a pawn.
When he realizes Corvin has taken her, he crumples a note and vows to burn down empires and wage total war to get his wife back.
