The Exes by Leodora Darlington Summary: A Dark Domestic Thriller

TL;DR: The Exes by Leodora Darlington: A Marriage Built on Secrets

Natalie has spent years building a life that looks stable from the outside.

She works as an office manager at a London craft brewery, she is married to its charming managing director, James, and the couple has just moved to Taplow to start a family.

Then a routine check of their joint savings account shows that £20,000 — her entire inheritance, and the money set aside for IVF — has disappeared.

What follows in Leodora Darlington’s The Exes is a story about memory gaps, buried letters, and the people closest to us.

  • The hook: Natalie’s IVF fund vanishes, and her husband James claims he used it to pay off his brother Will, who found letters linking Natalie to the deaths of three ex-boyfriends.
  • The twist: Natalie never killed anyone. Her younger sister Claire did — to protect her — and died the same night she killed the third man.
  • The real villain: James, who killed a former girlfriend in Corfu, stole the money to buy Will’s silence, and planned to frame Natalie for murder.
  • The theme core: sisterhood, buried guilt, and the masks people wear inside a marriage.

The Exes Book Summary: Full Story Breakdown

Spoiler warning: this section covers the plot, the twists, and the ending.

Natalie Doe works as an office manager at East London Chill, a thriving craft brewery run by her husband, James Thomas. The pair relocate to Taplow hoping for a fresh start. A diagnosis of severe endometriosis makes IVF their only route to parenthood.

When Natalie checks their savings, the £20,000 she inherited is gone. James breaks down and admits he paid his estranged, alcoholic older brother, Will.

According to James, Will found a hidden box under the floorboards containing unsent letters Natalie wrote to three former boyfriends.

Those letters describe violent thoughts and reference the deaths of all three men. James claims Will threatened to take them to the police unless he was paid and reinstated at the brewery.

Three Dead Ex-Boyfriends

The novel moves between present-day London and Natalie’s past. Her first boyfriend, Marc Baxter, was wealthy, casually racist, and publicly humiliated her at prom.

That night he tried to assault her while she was intoxicated; hours later he fell from a roof to his death.

Her university boyfriend Luca was a popular footballer with a congenital heart defect. He secretly recorded a sexual encounter with Natalie and leaked it across campus. He was later found dead in bed from a heart attack after taking MDMA.

Her third boyfriend, George, isolated her and assaulted her while she slept. During a confrontation at his house, a violent struggle ended with George stabbed to death. Natalie’s younger sister, Claire, was present.

For years Natalie believed she blacked out during moments of extreme rage. She convinced herself a violent “monster” lived inside her and killed all three men.

What Therapy Uncovers

Natalie attends sessions with Dr. Dimple Das, who presses her on her memory gaps and her estrangement from her family. Under that pressure, the truth surfaces: Natalie never killed anyone.

Claire pushed Marc off the roof after catching him attempting to assault Natalie. Claire spiked Luca’s drink with a lethal dose of MDMA to avenge the leaked video. Claire stabbed George during the fight after he shoved her into a counter.

Claire died that same night. When George shoved her, she struck her head on the corner of a marble kitchen counter. Unable to process the loss, Natalie buried the memory and used an AI messaging app trained on Claire’s old texts and voice notes to pretend her sister was still alive in Los Angeles.

James Thomas and the Real Scheme

When Natalie confronts Will about the blackmail, he denies it. Will never demanded money for the letters, and he did not send the threatening notes to her office. James fabricated the whole story.

James has a history Natalie knew nothing about. During a family holiday in Corfu, he pushed his high school girlfriend Chioma off a rock after she tried to end their relationship. Another former girlfriend, Jade Dacosta, died in circumstances officially recorded as suicide.

He took the £20,000 to buy Will’s silence about Chioma. When he found Natalie’s unsent letters, he saw an opportunity. He planted them at her office and forged a note in her handwriting, intending to push her into killing Will — or to kill her himself and stage a murder-suicide.

Dimple’s Real Identity

Natalie flees to Dimple’s home and learns her therapist’s true identity. Dimple is Joy, the secret half-sister of Natalie and Claire, born to their father and his mistress Dev.

After their mother Melissa accused Natalie of killing Claire, Joy blackmailed Natalie’s previous therapist into retiring so she could take over the case. Her goal was to observe Natalie and determine whether she was a killer.

How The Exes Ends

James realises Natalie has uncovered his past and the forged letters. He attacks her at home and tries to strangle her. Joy bursts into the room and strikes him over the head with a heavy lamp, saving Natalie’s life.

Natalie calls the police and emergency services. Weeks later, facing charges over Chioma’s death and attempted murder, James hangs himself in his living room.

In the aftermath, Natalie reconciles with her mother Melissa, bonds with Joy, and reconnects with her childhood friend Emily.

She finally accepts Claire’s death, releases her guilt, and honours the fierce love her sister carried for her. Leodora Darlington closes the novel on Natalie writing a final letter to Claire.
