Warning Signs Summary: Tracy Sierra’s Chilling Thriller

Warning Signs: A Ski Trip Turned Trap

A twelve-year-old boy straps on his skis for a backcountry trip with his father. The destination is a remote Colorado hut above eleven thousand feet, reachable only by climbing through deep winter snow.

Also waiting at that hut are wealthy investors, a hired mountain guide, and a deal that has to close. Tracy Sierra’s Warning Signs places Zach Fisher inside that group, where the greatest danger is not the avalanche terrain or the cold.

The novel follows a single weekend in the Elk Mountains, moving between present-day survival and memories of the mother who taught Zach how to read a mountain.

What he learned from her becomes the difference between living and dying.

TL;DR: The Short Version

Zach Fisher is twelve, recently motherless, and trained in backcountry safety by a mother who volunteered for Mountain Rescue. His father, Bram, is charming, financially desperate, and running a fraudulent property-tech company.

Bram brings Zach to an isolated hut to impress investors. Before the trip ends, a man dies in an avalanche, a woman’s body is found in the debris, and Zach learns from a secretly recorded conversation that his father murdered his mother and plans to kill him next.

What follows is a night escape into a blizzard, a pursuit through abandoned mining country, and a confrontation at the mouth of a hidden mine shaft. Zach carries the recording that will expose everything.

Warning Signs Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

One Year Earlier

Zach remembers a backcountry trip with his mother, Grace, a former Mountain Rescue volunteer. She teaches him to dig snow pits, measure slope angles with ski poles, and read snowpack layers.

She also drills him on transceiver searches and repeats one lesson above all others: the bravest choice in the backcountry is walking away from what you want. Grace tells him that animals act on instinct, but people choose to cause harm.

The Ascent to Pantheon Hut

A year after Grace’s death, Bram Fisher takes Zach to the Pantheon Hut, a two-story off-grid lodge above eleven thousand feet. Bram needs backing from billionaire Arlo Oliver and ranching heir Dave Dowling for his failing company, Ajax Property Tech.

On the trail, Zach finds a dead bull elk scoured to bare bone with unnatural precision. Bram dismisses it as bird scavenging and turns it into a campfire story.

At the hut, Bram’s assistant Ginny George is missing, though she had promised to arrive early. Bram lies that she set up the hut and left.

The group includes Shane Oliver, stunt skier Jon Hensley, Dave Dowling, Dave’s sixteen-year-old son Russ, investor Pike Whitlock, and Steve, the guide. While sweeping near the woodstove, Zach finds a diamond earring tangled in dried blood and scalp hair.

Outside, Zach and Russ build a snow shelter and spot long claw-crowned prints and a dark shape moving through the trees. That night in the outhouse, Zach hears dragging in the snow and a howl.

The Avalanche on Mount Mariah

Despite a level-two avalanche warning and fresh snowfall, the men insist on skiing Mariah Bowl. Steve recommends a lower tree-line route; Bram and Shane overrule him.

Shane and Jon drop in first, then Zach, who skis a clean line. Jon and Shane push the group toward a steeper, unvetted section. When Russ skis down, the snowpack collapses with a deep whumph, and a slab avalanche sweeps him downhill.

Zach wedges himself between two pines and deploys his airbag, which a branch spears. He survives at the slide’s edge, switches his beacon to search mode, follows the signal, and digs Russ out, clearing his airway.

A second, larger avalanche releases from the upper ridge. Searching the debris, the group finds Shane’s body near the surface, his neck broken.

They then uncover Ginny’s body. Her midsection has been violently scavenged, exposing crushed ribs. Zach sees a diamond earring in her right ear, matching the blood-crusted earring from the hut floorboard.

Zach says nothing as the men assume a predator scavenged her after she got lost. They carry Russ back to the hut, leaving Shane and Ginny behind.

The Recording

That night, Bram secretly dissolves sleeping pills from Jon’s pack into the drinks of Dave, Russ, and Pike. Zach avoids his water.

Zach hides Russ’s phone near the couches set to record audio, then goes upstairs while Bram and Pike drink below. The recording reveals everything.

Pike arrived at the hut early and confronted Ginny after she ended their relationship and called Ajax a scam. He strangled her, tore out an earring and scalp hair in the struggle, dumped her body on Mount Mariah, drove her car away, and texted Bram from her phone.

Bram’s history is worse. In Florida, he burned his house to kill his first wife, Serena, and their eight-year-old disabled son, Abraham Jr., for insurance money.

A year ago, Bram drowned Grace in the bathtub after she discovered his fraud and demanded a separation. He then took double-payout life insurance trusts on Grace for Zach and Bonnie, managed by Grace’s sister, Aunt Felicity.

On the recording, Bram tells Pike he intends to kill Zach on this trip, frame it as an avalanche accident, claim Zach’s share of the trust, and blackmail Pike.

The Escape into the Storm

Knowing his father will act at daylight, Zach gathers gear, takes the phone, and slips out of Pantheon Hut at 5:38 a.m. into the storm.

Skiing toward town, he reaches the wide treeless meadow he and Grace once tested. With sub-zero temperatures and no cell reception, he judges the crossing suicidal and turns back toward an abandoned 1881 miner’s cabin near Mount Mariah.

Bram and Pike follow. Zach uses a Gray Rabbit maneuver, leaping off the trail behind a granite boulder and hiding his tracks in the snow.

From cover, he watches Pike turn on Bram. Realizing Bram has no money and plans to expose him, Pike locks him in a chokehold. The men brawl until Bram strikes Pike’s head with a heavy gray object, sending him down a wooded ravine.

The Cabin and the Mine

Zach clears the cabin’s snow-choked chimney, starts a fire in the potbelly stove, and crawls into a sleeping bag. During the night, Bram finds him and cinches the top of the bag closed with a silicone ski strap, then tries to burn the cabin using lighter fluid and a wool blanket.

The damp blanket smothers the fire instead. Zach works the zipper open tooth by tooth and escapes.

At dawn, Zach skis toward the clearing holding the memorial sign for “The Swede.” Bram corners him there, mocking Grace and claiming rules never applied to successful men.

Zach confronts him about Serena, Abraham Jr., and Grace. Bram lunges, and his leg plunges into the snow-covered mouth of the abandoned vertical mine shaft.

Bram demands Zach hand over his skis or sleeping bag. Zach refuses, knowing Bram tried to burn him alive and would target Bonnie next. The snow collapses, and Bram falls into the shaft to his death.

Then the creature emerges from the trees: a wolverine that had been scavenging the elk and Ginny’s remains. Zach speaks to it calmly, telling it he is a person named Zach and that Bram is gone. The wolverine pads back into the forest.

In the distance, a Mountain Rescue helicopter crosses the valley. Zach stands with the recorded evidence that will clear his mother’s name, expose Bram’s crimes, and protect his sister.
