The Heir Apparent by Rebecca Armitage Summary: Royal Duty, Runaway Hearts
An Heir Who Walked Away
An avalanche in the Swiss Alps kills two heirs to the British throne — and in the Tasmanian wilderness, a princess who walked away eleven years earlier is about to be found.
The Heir Apparent by Rebecca Armitage imagines an alternate Britain ruled by the House of Villiers, a dynasty born from a royal mistress’s bloodline.
Princess Lexi Villiers traded palace life for scrubs, an emergency medicine residency, and a vineyard cottage.
Now fate has made her next in line to the crown, and she has one year to decide what her life is worth.
This Reese’s Book Club pick pairs royal intrigue and family secrets with a slow-burning romance set between London and Tasmania.

The Heir Apparent Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers)
Spoiler warning: this section retells the complete plot of the book, including the ending.
Before the Avalanche
The story begins decades earlier. In 1991, Vikki Shankar, a former flight attendant from Newcastle, marries into wealth and engineers her son Kris’s placement as boarding school suitemate to Prince Louis at Astley.
In 2009, fifteen-year-old Lexi and her suitemate Amira Shankar catch Louis and Kris secretly dancing together on The Mound. To protect Louis, the palace and Vikki arrange a cover story: Amira will pose as Louis’s girlfriend and later his wife, hiding his sexuality behind a marriage of convenience.
Worse follows in 2011. Lexi’s mother, Princess Isla, drowns off Rapallo, Italy, while Lexi sleeps on the family yacht. Her father, Prince Frederick, dispatches security guard Davide Rossi to remove Lexi from the scene and pays him for his silence.
Traumatized and appalled by the palace’s web of lies, Lexi flees to Australia in 2012 with money from her uncle James. She completes medical school in Tasmania and moves into a converted barn on the Jennings vineyard.
There she lives alongside winemaker Jack Jennings and fellow resident Finn Vanderville. For seven years, an unspoken bond grows between Lexi and Jack, though she never lets it become romance.
The Helicopter on Maria Island
On New Year’s Day 2023, Lexi is camping on Maria Island with Jack and Finn. A chartered helicopter lands at their campsite. Stewart, private secretary to Queen Eleanor, brings devastating news: an avalanche in Zermatt has crushed Prince Frederick, Prince Louis, and Kris Shankar.
Frederick dies on the mountain, and Louis dies shortly after in Singapore as Lexi is flown home. As the only surviving child of the late heir, Lexi becomes Heir Apparent to her eighty-nine-year-old grandmother, Queen Eleanor.
The Queen grants Lexi one year to accept the succession or renounce it. Refusal would pass the crown to Prince Richard, Duke of Clarence. The Heir Apparent cuts between this 2023 countdown and flashbacks to 1991, 2009, 2011, and 2012, slowly exposing the secrets the family buried.

Eleven Months Under the Crown
Lexi moves into Cumberland Palace with Amira, now a grieving widow. Private secretary Mary Williams manages her wardrobe, duties, and public image, while Prime Minister Jenny Walsh becomes an unlikely ally.
Prince Richard hires a private investigator and locates Davide Rossi. He learns Lexi was on the yacht the night her mother drowned, and he threatens to leak the scandal to tabloid editor Posey Habsburg-Mollard unless Lexi steps aside.
In August 2023, Jack and Finn visit Scotland. Lexi and Jack finally sleep together, but she then pushes him away, convinced palace life would ruin him. Jack returns to Australia heartbroken.
Telling the Truth
Refusing blackmail, Lexi builds a counter-strategy with Annabelle, Amira, Vikki, and Mary. She gives a recorded interview to Dee, a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist based in New York, beyond the reach of British injunctions.
In the interview, Lexi reveals her mother’s drowning, her father’s cover-up, Richard’s extortion, and her decision to renounce the throne. Annabelle and Amira give supporting interviews exposing Richard’s misconduct.
With help from Jenny Walsh and Mary, Lexi receives a non-royal passport in her birth name, Alexandrina Anne Barbara Mary Villiers.
She escapes Cumberland Palace hidden inside a carpet cleaner’s van and boards a flight at Heathrow.
The Ending
Lexi lands in Hobart on New Year’s Eve 2023. Uncle James picks her up and reveals that Amira called Jack weeks earlier to explain the blackmail and Lexi’s sacrifice. James drives her straight to the Jennings vineyard.
Among the pinot vines, Lexi confesses she has loved Jack from the start. He embraces her and tells her everything is going to be good. As 2024 begins, she prepares to resume her medical residency in Hobart, living at last as Dr. Lexi Villiers.

What Drives the Story
Rebecca Armitage builds the plot around five recurring concerns:
| Theme | How the Book Presents It |
|---|---|
| Duty vs. Personal Authenticity | The plot turns on a one-year deadline: accept the crown or pass it to Prince Richard. Lexi’s medical career in Tasmania stands in for the life she would give up. |
| Grief, Memory, and Trauma | The story runs from Isla’s drowning in 2011 to the avalanche deaths of Frederick, Louis, and Kris. Flashbacks show how suppressed events continue to shape Lexi’s choices. |
| Media Surveillance | Tabloids like the Daily Post track the family, and Richard threatens to sell Lexi’s secret to an editor. Her escape depends on a journalist outside British legal reach. |
| Class, Privilege, and Mobility | Vikki Shankar maneuvers her children into royal circles while Mary rises from Brixton through a scholarship. Tasmanian vineyard life runs as a counterpoint to palace hierarchy. |
| Family Secrets and Institutional Corruption | A marriage of convenience hides Louis’s sexuality, and hush money conceals a drowning. Institutions protect reputation over the people inside them. |
