The Last Time We Drowned Summary
Warning: This section contains major spoilers for the entire book, including the ending.
Charlie Engels arrives in Islamorada, Florida, with almost no money and a mountain of debt. She meets Viv Rockland at a café, and Viv hires her on the spot to manage bookish content for the Empress brand.
Charlie’s past is heavy. In college, she and her best friend Sage Tartnet spent years developing stories together. Charlie created the concept for a dark mermaid myth titled The Last Time We Drowned.
Sage secretly wrote Charlie’s plot, sold it as A Song of Scales and Salt, and became a bestselling author. She blocked Charlie completely. Soon after, Sage drowned in Lake Michigan.
Aboard Empress, Charlie meets makeup artist Fiona, nutritionist Rachel, fitness influencer Ashley, and former pro surfer Piper. Viv explains that Charlie is replacing an influencer named Elena who supposedly quit.
Almost immediately, Charlie sees visions of a bloated, waterlogged woman. The figure appears in the ocean, in fogged mirrors, and in dark corners of the yacht.
While exploring the lower crew quarters, Charlie finds a hidden phone with a bloody fingerprint. Notifications reveal it belongs to the missing Elena.
Piper free-dives to the ocean floor and hands Charlie a gold cuff bracelet. Charlie later identifies it on Elena’s social media posts.
Tensions escalate when Viv secretly records Charlie tearfully admitting how Sage stole her book idea. Without consent, Viv edits and posts “Charlie’s Truth” to Instagram, and it goes viral.
Meanwhile, Charlie discovers that Ashley is secretly having an affair with Carl Mumford, Fiona’s boyfriend. A Category 2 hurricane strikes the Keys, locking everyone aboard.
When Trey Bardi and Carl try to use the yacht’s hidden bridge to contact the Coast Guard, they find the controls intentionally smashed. That night, Carl collapses and dies in the living room.
Charlie identifies the cause as secondary drowning. Fluid built up in his lungs hours after he accidentally inhaled water during a swim race with Trey.
Piper, drunk and sobbing, confesses to Charlie that she smashed the bridge controls. She called the Coast Guard to cancel rescue efforts because “we don’t deserve to be saved.”
Piper gives Charlie her phone passcode and then leaps off the roof deck into the storm. She drowns in the rough sea.
Using Piper’s passcode, Charlie unlocks a hidden 20-minute video. The recording exposes the truth about Elena.
Weeks earlier, Elena tried to quit Empress to leave with Trey. Viv, Piper, Fiona, Rachel, and Ashley physically restrained her. In the scuffle, Elena fell onto a butcher knife held by Viv.
To avoid prison, Viv convinced the terrified girls to cover it up. Piper was forced to finish Elena off with the knife before dumping her weighted body in the sea.
Before Viv catches her, Charlie secretly texts the murder video to Sage’s old phone number, which sits in Charlie’s Milwaukee apartment. Viv corners Charlie in Piper’s room with a handgun.
Charlie reveals what she did. Under pressure, she also confesses her own secret: on the day Sage died, Charlie secretly unscrewed the shackle connecting the anchor to Sage’s pontoon boat.
When Sage jumped into Lake Michigan while drunk, her unanchored boat drifted away. She drowned. Viv forces Charlie at gunpoint onto the yacht’s tender boat into the storm.
The tender strikes a submerged reef and capsizes. Thrown into the dark ocean, Charlie refuses to succumb to guilt. She swims through the storm using wooden dock pilings to guide herself to Ligia Island’s beach.

The next day, the storm breaks. The Coast Guard and police arrive after Trey uses a radio in the island beach house.
Elena’s decomposing body is recovered from a sandbank. Viv and Piper are presumed dead at sea. Charlie conceals her role in Sage’s death and leaves the blame on Viv and Trey.
In the aftermath, Charlie partners with Ashley to write an investigative tell-all book called @EmpressExposed. The project exposes Trey Bardi and Royal Yachts, and Charlie secures a major publishing deal.
She finally steps into her own identity as an author, leaving behind the guilt that haunted her throughout Saratoga Schaefer’s novel.
