Strange Sally Diamond Summary: A Dark Tale of Hidden Origins

TL;DR: The Quick Summary

When Dr. Tom Diamond dies, his daughter does exactly what he always told her to do.

She puts him out with the bins.

Sally Diamond is 42, lives alone in a bungalow off a long lane in County Roscommon, and has never quite understood how people work.

Liz Nugent’s Strange Sally Diamond begins with that single act of literal obedience and follows the chain reaction it sets off.

What looks like a grotesque crime quickly becomes something else: the unravelling of a decades-old abduction case that spans Ireland and New Zealand.

The novel tracks Sally’s attempt to live in the world while learning, piece by piece, where she came from.

  • Sally Diamond is a socially disconnected 42-year-old who takes her adoptive father’s joke about the bins literally, triggering a police investigation and a media storm.
  • Her father’s posthumous letters reveal her real identity: Mary Norton, born in captivity to a kidnapped woman named Denise Norton.
  • The narrative alternates between Sally’s present-day life in rural Ireland and the past of her biological brother, Peter Geary, who was raised by their abductor in New Zealand.
  • Key themes: captivity trauma, nature versus nurture, isolation, false identities, and media sensationalism.
  • Peter travels to Ireland, takes his share of an inheritance, and later flees to New Mexico, where he plans to repeat his father’s crimes.
  • The epilogue follows Amanda Heron, Peter’s daughter, performing a concert in Auckland in 2022.

Strange Sally Diamond Summary

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot, including the ending.

In 1966, eleven-year-old Denise Norton is kidnapped in Dublin by a dentist named Conor Geary.

He locks her in a soundproofed extension behind his house in Killiney and holds her there for fourteen years.

Denise gives birth to a son, Peter, in 1974. Once Peter is toilet-trained, Geary takes him into the main house and raises him in isolation.

Geary convinces Peter that he suffers from a fatal skin condition called “necrotic hominoid contagion.” The lie makes Peter terrified of touching anyone other than his father.

Denise later gives birth to a daughter, Mary. In 1980, a burglar overhears Denise shouting her name, and Geary panics, fleeing to London with Peter and leaving Denise and five-year-old Mary locked in the extension.

Police rescue both of them days later. Dr. Tom Diamond and his wife Dr. Jean Diamond treat the pair at St Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital, and Denise dies by suicide in 1981.

Tom and Jean adopt Mary and rename her Sally Diamond. They move to a secluded bungalow outside Carricksheedy in County Roscommon, where Tom keeps detailed secret psychiatric records on her.

Meanwhile, Geary settles in Rotorua, New Zealand, under the name James Armstrong. In 1983 he abducts fourteen-year-old Lindy Weston and locks her in a soundproofed barn.

In 1985, seventeen-year-old Peter learns the skin disease was invented and confronts his father in a car. Geary dies in the resulting crash and fire.

Peter does not release Lindy. He keeps her imprisoned for decades, and in 1996 she gives birth to a daughter, whom Peter leaves at an Auckland church.

Lindy dies of untreated appendicitis in 2012, and Peter disposes of her body before moving to Wellington, where he works in cyber security.

In November 2017, Tom Diamond dies in his bed, and Sally cremates his body in a garden incinerator barrel. A neighbour notices the smell, and the police are called.

Sally is cleared of murder, but the story becomes a national media sensation. Tom leaves three sealed letters, files, and audio tapes that reveal Sally’s origins.

An anonymous package arrives from New Zealand containing a worn teddy bear named Toby, signed only “S,” prompting Irish police and Interpol to reopen the Geary cold case.

With her psychotherapist Tina, her doctor Angela Caffrey, her Aunt Christine, and new friends in Carricksheedy, Sally begins a slow social integration.

She learns to use a smartphone, takes up yoga, sells Tom’s estate, renovates a village cottage, and takes a piano job at a local hotel.

A local accountant named Mark Butler repeatedly tries to access Tom’s psychiatric files. He is revealed to be Mark Norton, Denise’s younger brother and Sally’s biological uncle.

In September 2019, Sally receives a DNA kit from “S.” Testing confirms “S” is Peter Geary, her full biological brother, living as Steven Armstrong.

Peter visits Ireland and stays with Sally, who shares half of her inheritance from Conor Geary’s estate with him. He remains defensive about their father and refuses therapy.

When New Zealand podcaster Kate Ngata and Peter’s biological daughter Amanda begin investigating Lindy Weston’s abduction, Peter panics.

He converts his money into cryptocurrency, buys a fake identity as “Dane Truskowski,” and flees to Chicago, then to a remote track in Nutt, New Mexico.

There he builds a house and plans a soundproofed barn with shackles, intending to kidnap a woman and keep her until she submits.

During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Sally learns from police that Peter was connected to Lindy’s abduction and Amanda’s abandonment.

Shaken by the revelation, Sally retreats into self-isolation, puts her earplugs back in, resumes pretending to be deaf, and pulls out her hair in distress.

In May 2022, twenty-five-year-old Amanda Heron performs her own compositions at a sold-out Auckland Town Hall, having chosen to move past the media drama of her biological parents.

Toby the teddy bear, mailed to her by Peter, rests on the piano lid as she begins to play.
