TL;DR: The Essential Briefing
Lyra Silvertongue searches for her lost dæmon, Pantalaimon, in the ruins of a deserted city.
There, she uses a sharp needle to free a stolen dæmon from a cage. This act sets her on a path through Aleppo and Baku to a red building in the Karamakan desert.
The Magisterium plans to destroy a portal there, led by Lyra’s uncle, Marcel Delamare. Lyra, Malcolm Polstead, witches, and gryphons converge on the desert.
A thermobaric bomb shatters the portal. Lyra uses her needle to cut through a stationary fragment and pulls Pantalaimon back into her arms, finally reuniting with her dæmon.

She uses it to cut through the cage’s steel mesh. Jamal escapes, but Lyra loses the golden case of her alethiometer to the fleeing Scythian.

There, he is reunited with Pan. Queen Shahrnavāz makes him repair Lyra’s smashed alethiometer. Malcolm beats the gold case into a circlet, keeping the internal mechanisms safe.
In Aleppo, Lyra uses her needle to rescue Ionides from a Magisterial prison. They escape to Baku on a bus. Mustafa Bey is assassinated, causing riots.
Lyra, Ionides, and his former lover Leila Pervani escape Baku on a fishing boat. Meanwhile, a gryphon named Gulya kills the sorcerer Sorush and grows to her full size.
Lyra, Malcolm, Asta, and Pan are reunited on the coast.
At the ruined Tashbulak research station, Pan meets scientist Brynmor Strauss.
Strauss has returned from the red building sick with a plague that affects dæmons. The main characters converge at the red building in the Karamakan desert.
Olivier Bonneville, who has learned he is Lyra’s half-brother, kills Delamare to stop the war. A thermobaric bomb shatters the portal into fragments.
Colonel Schreiber is killed. Malcolm and Lyra are thrown down by the blast. Asta tells Lyra that Pan is calling from the other side. Lyra uses her needle to find a stationary fragment.
