Taste of the Dark Summary: Billionaire Office Romance

TL;DR: A Story of Ninety Days and Two Kinds of Darkness

Eliana Hunter has ninety days of sight left.

A rare genetic condition is steadily closing her world down to a pinhole, and she decides she will not spend those days being humiliated by the man who signs her paycheck.

Her boss is Bastian Hale, a billionaire chef and hospitality mogul with a temper as sharp as his knives.

When she tries to quit, he refuses — and offers her one million dollars to stay through the launch of his flagship project.

Taste of the Dark by Nicole Fox is the first book in the Izotov Bratva duet. It moves between Chicago’s fine-dining kitchens, a fourteen-story construction site, and the shadows of a Russian crime family Bastian has spent sixteen years trying to outrun.

  • The countdown: Eliana’s blindness gives the story a literal day-by-day clock.
  • The bargain: Bastian shreds her resignation and buys ninety days of her time.
  • The secret: Bastian Hale was born Semyon Izotov and walked away from the mafia.
  • The escalation: Sabotage at Project Olympus, a hitman, and a brother who won’t take no for an answer.
  • The ending: A multi-layered cliffhanger that hands off directly to Book 2.

Taste of the Dark Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: the following section describes the plot, the ending, and the cliffhanger.

Eliana Hunter learns from Dr. Haggerty that she has Leber congenital amaurosis, a rare genetic condition that will leave her blind within ninety days.

That night she practices walking through her office in the dark and stumbles into Bastian Hale’s private office, catching him shirtless.

The next morning she brings two hundred dollars of pastries to the test kitchen staff, who are buried under Project Olympus menu drafts stamped “NGE” — Not Good Enough.

When Bastian finds the group laughing, he drops the pastry box on the floor and humiliates her in front of thirty employees.

Eliana writes a resignation letter with Yasmin’s help and delivers it. Bastian shreds it, threatens to blackball her across Chicago hospitality, and offers one million dollars to stay ninety days through the investor preview of Project Olympus.

She breaks down and tells him she is going blind. He signs her onto a modified contract.

Bastian’s real name is Semyon Izotov. At twelve he was locked in a restaurant walk-in freezer by his older brother Aleksei while Aleksei executed a bookie. He fled that life and built Hale Hospitality instead.

Aleksei reappears in his office demanding to launder dirty real estate money through the company. Bastian refuses, protecting his clean life and his younger brother Sage, who was paralyzed eight years ago in a crash while Bastian was driving.

Bastian takes Eliana to a wine tasting at Coruscant, then to Mermaid’s Purse, Dante’s basement oyster bar, where he guides her hands through shucking her first raw oysters. The attraction between them becomes harder to manage.

A two-hundred-thousand-dollar HVAC failure threatens the Project Olympus timeline. Bastian accuses Eliana in a board meeting, then she proves contractor Frank Moretti supplied bad engineering figures. Trapped in a dark elevator during a power outage, they kiss.

At the construction site Bastian saves Eliana from falling through an unfinished floor opening. They uncover widespread defects in the coolers, gas lines, and fire suppression systems.

One morning at 3:48 A.M. he takes her to the Lake Michigan shore to watch the sunrise, crossing off the first item on her sight bucket list.

Bastian rents out the Music Box Theatre so she can watch Casablanca on the big screen, and the night ends in intimacy. Later he carries her to his penthouse, where Sage reveals that the freezer story was not a game of tag.

A black sedan begins following Eliana. The hitman Petya Egorov tries to abduct her in a park; Bastian beats him unconscious and later tracks him down, breaks his fingers, and cuts off his pinky as a warning.

Eliana and Bastian agree on a “seventy-nine-day pact” to shut out the outside world. They visit the Art Institute, cook risotto, bowl with Zeke and Yasmin, and view the skyline from the fourteenth floor of Project Olympus.

Bastian confronts Aleksei at the Bratva nightclub The Caged Bird. Aleksei admits he orchestrated the sabotage of Project Olympus to force his brother into submission, and offers to restore everything overnight if Bastian proves his loyalty by killing a rival.

On the night of the investor gala, Eliana dresses in wine-dark velvet and waits. Bastian never arrives and does not answer his phone. Believing she has been used, she walks into the rain and crosses off her last bucket-list item while her vision blurs into dark dots.

She tracks his phone to an alley behind an Irish bar and finds Bastian kneeling over a dead body in a bloody tuxedo, holding a chef’s knife, sawing off the man’s pinky. He turns and says, “I did this for you.”

She flees to Yasmin’s apartment and finds the door open, the rooms trashed, Zeke bleeding on the floor, and Brandon strangling Yasmin in the bedroom.

At the same moment Bastian looks up at the skyline and sees every light of Project Olympus glowing. Aleksei steps out of the shadows, opens his arms, and says, “Brother, you did well… Welcome home, Semyon.”

Bastian steps into his brother’s embrace, leaving Eliana behind. Taste of the Dark ends on that cliffhanger and continues in Taste of the Light.
