Cut Off from Sky and Earth Summary
Spoiler Warning: This section reveals major plot points and the ending.
Twenty-one years ago in Windy Rock, Maine, eighteen-year-old Lexi Lincoln was stabbed by Tate Weakes during a nor’easter. Her attacker’s father, Tom Weakes, had been watching outside her window. Tom later jumped to his death. Lexi survived with amnesia and scars, eventually changing her name to Alex Liu.
Tate’s mother, Tara, fled with her younger son Tristan to Arizona. She remarried Jon Rose, who adopted Tristan. Tate stayed behind and later reappeared in Tempe, Arizona, fourteen years ago.
He tried to recruit sixteen-year-old Tristan into violence. When Tristan refused, Tate stabbed college student Dana Rowland to death during a dust storm. Tristan anonymously reported Tate, who vanished.
Seven years ago in Hope Falls, Ohio, college student Emily Fulton gave her restaurant shift to her roommate Cassie Baughman. Cassie slept in Emily’s bed.
Tate Weakes broke through the window, intending to kill red-haired Emily, but murdered Cassie instead. Emily found the body at 4:51 AM and later received a note reading “IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOU.”
Tristan, realizing Emily was the intended target, moved to Hope Falls to protect her. He posed as his brother “Tate” in therapy with Dr. Wilde. He then engineered a meeting with Emily. They fell in love and married, both hiding critical secrets.
In the present, Emily struggles with writer’s block on her novel The Tower. Tristan suggests a retreat at a North Carolina cabin owned by “Alex.”
Meanwhile, a red-haired ballet dancer named Giselle Ward is stabbed in Little Sweetwater. Tristan, a forensic scientist, realizes the murder was a distraction.
He drives Emily to the cabin and meets Alex. Emily mentions Tristan grew up in Windy Rock. Both Alex and Tristan panic but say nothing. Tristan returns to Pennsylvania.
At the crime lab, Tristan is suspended because his DNA was found on Giselle’s body. He is framed.
His mother calls to say Dr. Wilde reported “Tate Weakes” is dead. Then Tristan is arrested for the murders of Giselle and Tate.
In interrogation, he realizes Dr. Wilde treated both him and the real Tate. Dr. Wilde became obsessed with Tate’s killings, murdered Tate, framed Tristan, and went to North Carolina to kill Emily and Alex.
At the farm, a blizzard cuts off power and communication. An intruder gaslights Emily and Alex, leaving an axe, footprints, and a sandalwood-scented blanket.
They realize they are targets of the same threat. They flee to the attic. Alex falls two stories trying to retrieve a phone and breaks bones. Dr. Wilde breaks in and confronts Emily, planning to stage her death as suicide.
Alex drags herself to a gun safe and fires a shot into the ceiling. Startled, Dr. Wilde pauses. Emily grabs a shard of glass and stabs him in the neck. He dies. Police arrive. Emily finds Alex, and they hold hands as first responders enter.
One month later, Alex sells the farm to Emily and leaves with her husband Robert.
Three months later, Emily hosts a book launch for The Tower, now a bestseller. Dr. Wilde’s records exonerate Tristan.
Emily tells Tristan she still loves him but needs time and space to live independently. He promises to wait. Emily returns to her guests, standing on her own.
