Bad Bishop Summary: The Full Story
Warning: Contains Major Spoilers.
The story begins with extreme violence.
Tiernan Callaghan, an enforcer for the Irish Callaghan clan, is captured by the New York Camorra. He is beaten and his left eye is gouged out by Achilles Ferrante as revenge for a past killing. As he leaves the estate, holding a skull, he sees Lila Ferrante by a fountain.
Tiernan is brutal. He dunks her head in freezing water and forces her to hold his severed eyeball. He wants to terrorize her family.
Lila seems intellectually disabled, but this is an act.
Lila is highly intelligent but hard of hearing. Her mother, Chiara, made her fake a cognitive delay to protect her from being sold into marriage. Two weeks after the fountain incident, Lila tries to find a moment of peace at a wedding.
She goes into the woods and is drugged and brutally raped by an unknown attacker. Eight weeks later, she discovers she is pregnant. Her dying father, Don Vello Ferrante, refuses an abortion to avoid public shame.
He forces Lila to marry Tiernan Callaghan. The marriage is a strategic alliance. Tiernan accepts because he gets territory and military support against the Russian Bratva. They marry on Crimson Key, but the wedding night is violent.
Lila shoots him and stabs him. Tiernan realizes she is not disabled. He proposes a ceasefire. They move into his cold apartment above a tavern in Hunts Point. They mostly avoid each other at first.
Tiernan’s twin sister, Tierney, becomes close to Lila. She gives Lila the Wi-Fi password. This allows Lila to research assistive devices for the deaf, making her realize what her mother hid from her.
During this time, Tiernan finds Lila’s sketch of Tate Blackthorn. He suspects Tate is the father or Lila is a spy. He takes her to an OB-GYN appointment. The doctor reveals Lila is thirteen weeks pregnant, which is before the wedding.
Tiernan forces the doctor to falsify the timeline. They share a passionate kiss at a shooting range. A sudden car crash changes everything. It was orchestrated by Fintan’s loan sharks to kill Lila’s baby.
Tiernan finally confesses his love for her after the crash. While recovering, Chiara tells Lila the truth: Vello is not her biological father. Her real father was a Swedish painter named Hugo, whom Vello murdered.
Tiernan flies to Las Vegas with Luca and Achilles to attack the Bratva. He confronts Igor’s son, Alexei. Alexei reveals that Fintan was the mole selling secrets to the Bratva all along. The truth about the rapist is still hidden though.
Later, a blackmailer demands cash. Lila breaks her promise to stay safe and goes to the port. She confronts a sniper on the roof and shoots him dead. The sniper is a poor waiter, Roger Carsodo, who was just a patsy hired by the real rapist.
When Lila gives birth to her son, Gennaro “Nero,” the truth comes out. The baby’s dark red hair confirms the horrific reality. Tiernan realizes his own older brother, Fintan, was the one who raped Lila.
Fintan had kept her bloodied tiara and hired the sniper. Tiernan tracks Fintan down, shoots him in the spine, castrates him, and kills him. The Bratva take the blame for the death.
The book ends seven weeks later. Lila receives a cochlear implant. In her epilogue, she reveals she had recovered the memory of her assault weeks earlier. She knew Fintan was the rapist but chose to keep the secret to protect her marriage to Tiernan.
