Hazelthorn by CG Drews Summary: A Descent into Gothic Horror

Introduction

Behind the locked doors of a decaying mansion, a boy named Evander has spent years sedated and confined.

He believes he is ill, fragile, and recovering from a childhood attack. That belief shatters over the course of one strange night.

The Rage of Hazelthorn by C. G. Drews follows Evander as he steps outside his room and into a family legacy built on blood.

This book suits readers who enjoy young adult gothic horror with queer romance and body horror.

It will also connect with those interested in stories about family secrets, isolation, and botanical or ecological horror.

The reading experience is claustrophobic and feverish.

Sensory details around food, fabric, plants, and wounds are frequent. Romance exists alongside fear, betrayal, and physical harm.

TL;DR: A Boy, a Garden, and a Fortune Built on Blood

Evander lives locked in the north wing of Hazelthorn Estate, sedated and isolated by his guardian.

When his door is left unlocked, he discovers a house full of greedy relatives, a garden that crystallizes human blood into rubies, and a lawyer hiding the real will.

His search for answers leads to a horrifying truth: Evander is not human. He is a plant-based creature grown by the garden and harvested for years. The novel builds toward a violent, botanical reckoning as Evander embraces what he is and chooses who he loves.

Key subjects include family greed, medical abuse, queer rage, and monstrous self-acceptance.

The Rage of Hazelthorn Summary: Full Story Spoilers

Spoiler warning: This section recounts major events and the ending.

Seventeen-year-old Evander has lived in the north wing of Hazelthorn Estate for as long as he can remember. His guardian, Byron Lennox-Hall, keeps him heavily sedated and away from the world.

One evening, Evander finds his bedroom door unlocked. He wanders downstairs and sees Laurie Lennox-Hall, the boy he remembers trying to bury him alive seven years earlier.

Evander then finds Byron in the conservatory. Byron warns him never to enter the gardens and collapses, choking to death on black froth filled with leaves.

Carrington the butler locks Evander back in his room for three days. When Laurie finally frees him, a young attorney named Benedict Dawes reads the will. Evander inherits everything, including 1.1 billion dollars. Laurie receives nothing.

Relatives arrive for the funeral. Oleander, Bane, and Azalea all want control of the estate. Evander begins investigating Byron’s death and the strange plants around the property.

A flashback reveals that Laurie tried to hide a bleeding ten-year-old Evander in a shallow grave. Evander bit through Laurie’s wrist, tearing his tendons. Byron knocked Evander out with a shovel.

Evander discovers a rawhide journal called the Hazelthorn Field Guide. It lists impossible toxic plants. He also finds a red door in the garden wall, painted in blood, that beats like a heart.

Carrington returns as a plant-infested corpse and attacks Evander. Laurie and Evander survive, and Evander kills the reanimated butler with a rock. He nearly drowns in a stagnant pool but is pulled out by a vine.

The truth arrives in pieces. Evander’s parents are a photograph cut from a magazine. His name came from Laurie’s imaginary friend. His chest is packed with soil and vines.

Oleander and Bane sedate Evander and vivisect him. They harvest his wooden ribs, which grow back. Laurie breaks him out, and they find the real will in Byron’s attic office. Laurie is the true heir.

During an episode, Evander attacks Laurie and bites him. He discovers his severed hand regenerates with bark and leaves. He poisons the family with Heart Rot at the funeral wake.

Evander runs to the garden and digs up Laurie’s dead body. The garden restores Laurie and destroys the mansion. Roots kill Dawes.

Laurie and Evander choose to stay together in the ruins, locked inside with the garden forever.
