Black Willow Witch Summary: A Spicy Small Town Romantasy

TL;DR: The Short Version

Chilgrave has no cell service, no internet, and no human residents. It has witches, werewolves, and a manor that decides for itself who may walk through its front door.

When dark-practitioner Millicent Vautier dies, her will hands ancestral land to Alpha Jax “Ripper” Stone and leaves Black Willow Manor to whichever Vautier witch can get inside.

Emberlyn Vautier only wants her mother’s pearl earrings from the house. Black Willow Witch by Suzanne Wright follows what happens when the house lets her in.

  • Central setup: Millicent’s will splits her estate between her estranged granddaughter and the Alpha of the Ashwood clan.
  • Central pairing: Emberlyn Vautier and Ripper Stone move from wary allies to partners who scent-mark, fight, and negotiate side by side.
  • Central mystery: Curse jars, carved sigils, and Rabid wolves point to witches inside the coven, not outside it.
  • Central climax: A masked faction storms the manor, and Emberlyn answers with goblins, lightning, and crimson rain.

The book blends small-town supernatural politics, legal disputes over a will, and a fast-burn romance set in an isolated town founded by the first witch and the first werewolf.

Black Willow Witch Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot from beginning to ending.

The book opens with a prologue. At seven years old, Emberlyn Vautier is bullied by coven children named Tyra, Sera, and Ames. She uses dark lessons from her grandmother Millicent to summon thorny vines, snakes, spiders, and insects against them.

Millicent tells her granddaughter to become the biggest and baddest witch in town so nobody bullies her again. Twenty years later, Millicent dies peacefully on a park bench.

At the funeral, High Priestess Reena reads a spelled envelope. Millicent’s children Gill and Dez, along with grandchildren Mari and Ames, expect to receive Black Willow Manor and its land. Reena has already arranged to sell that land to a werewolf construction company run by Alpha Carver.

Instead, the will distributes gag gifts to the family. Emberlyn’s friends, the twins Paisley and Kage Sanders, receive an Aztec coin collection and a Ouija board. The surrounding ancestral clan land goes to Jax “Ripper” Stone, Alpha of the Ashwood clan.

Millicent also leaves “Emberlyn” to Ripper as a sarcastic bequest. The manor itself will belong to whichever Vautier witch can get inside, and Emberlyn’s mother’s pearl earrings are stored there.

Relatives try to force their way in and the sentient defensive barrier blasts them backward.

Emberlyn approaches respectfully and offers a gift of power made of thousands of swirling moths. The house recognizes her magick, welcomes her, and opens its door.

Emberlyn moves into the manor and cleanses its lingering negative energy. She avoids the spare room and the basement. She keeps running Vautier Laundry Hub, a business that cleans bloodied werewolf clothing and sells potions.

Ripper visits to confirm she will not contest his land claim, and to ask her to recreate a full-moon elixir Millicent once made for him. Emberlyn agrees, and the two form an alliance that pairs clan protection with her magick.

While inspecting the border, they find a buried curse jar meant to poison the land. Emberlyn identifies the spellwork as amateurish.

Meanwhile, her family hires coven lawyer Tyra to contest the will on grounds of mental incapacity. At a council hearing presided over by neutral Alpha Shane, Millicent’s lawyer Clarence Robbins produces a letter of wishes and a medical signature confirming her sanity. Shane rules the will valid.

Outside her home, Emberlyn is attacked by a Rabid werewolf. Ripper and his brother Logan intervene, and note that the Rabid fled in an unusual way.

A second Rabid, a clan wolf named Lincoln who had been missing for two years, attacks her in the yard. Emberlyn puts him to sleep with a spell and finds dark magick cast onto his eyelids, holding him in an unnatural killing rage.

Deep in Bloodhill Forest, Ripper, Logan, and Kerr find dark sigils carved into trees beside piles of animal bones. The arrangement forms a trap built by a witch to lure and sleep Rabid wolves so they can be captured and weaponized.

A town hall meeting reveals a secret faction inside the coven. The group is using weaponized Rabid wolves to undermine High Priestess Reena and destabilize the town.

During this period, Emberlyn and Ripper begin a relationship, and he scent-marks her as a signal of protection and partnership. Emberlyn also supports Paisley, who chooses the Change to become a werewolf in Ripper’s clan alongside her twin brother Kage.

The rebel faction makes its move. First, they trigger a mass brawl at Yvette’s diner using a coercive voice-spelling technique, pulling Ripper and his enforcers away from the manor.

Eight robed and masked members then ambush Reena, bind her magick, and drag her to Black Willow Manor. The group includes Penelope, Ames, Bennet, Ethel, Thad, Getty, Ruben, and Reena’s husband Ward.

Drawing on borrowed dark power from a summoned deity, they break the manor’s shield and demand that Emberlyn join their inner circle or die alongside Reena. Emberlyn refuses, unmasks them, and lowers the barrier herself.

She opens the basement and releases her secret weapon: red goblins, attendants of the Blood God summoned years earlier by Millicent. Locusts, lightning, crimson rain, rats, and venomous serpents follow.

In the fight, Emberlyn snaps Bennet’s bones and kills him. She shatters Ames’s knees and breaks his neck. She kills Getty with a heart-striking wave of magick and kills Ruben with a lightning strike.

She spares Ethel and Thad, the parents of Paisley and Kage, and places them in an indefinite coma instead. When Ward tries to flee, Ripper arrives in his beastly wolf form and kills him.

With the faction destroyed, Reena’s authority is restored, though she acknowledges Emberlyn’s greater power. The captured Rabid wolves, Lincoln included, are put to sleep safely so they can be rehabilitated or returned to their families.

Ripper and Emberlyn return inside the manor. He declares his intention to mate her permanently and moves into Black Willow Manor, demons and basement goblins included.

Emberlyn accepts, and the book ends with her holding a permanent home and a partner who accepts her fully.

Quotes from Black Willow Witch

“Be the biggest, baddest witch in town so no one ever dares bully you again.”

“No one always uses magick for good, just as no one always uses it for bad. I follow my own path using my own moral compass – we all do. I’m willing to own it aloud, unlike any of you.”

“Truth is that girl has the ability to commit every magickal heinous act you can imagine. But she has a code; lines she won’t cross. Unless you push or corner her – then she has few limits. That doesn’t make her evil, it makes her ruthless.”

“She might say she’s an ally, but she’ll screw you over. She’s a goddamn psycho.” / “All the more reason for you to leave her alone, wouldn’t you say?”

“The house will have sensed what I myself strongly feel – they care nothing for it and have no intention of nurturing it with their own magick. And if that’s the case, where’s the wrong in it going to the one person who adores it?”

“They’re causing mayhem.’ ‘They’re causing pain. Anyone can do that.’ Emberlyn flicked a dismissive hand. ‘The faction isn’t worth your fear. They’re just a bunch of mediocre witches dabbling in things they don’t fully understand – they’ve proven that with how sloppy their spells are.”

“You weren’t safe with the coven; they wouldn’t accept you. You weren’t safe with Michael; he let you down. You weren’t even completely safe with Millicent; she wasn’t there for you emotionally. But, baby, I swear you’re safe with me.”
