Thorns & Fire by Helen Scheuerer Summary: Soul Bond Secrets & War
TL;DR: The Kingdom and the Bond
Wren Embervale has survived assassins and shadow wars, but her greatest trial lies in a laboratory and a throne room.
Helen Scheuerer’s Thorns & Fire, the second book in The Ashes of Thezmarr series, raises the stakes from personal survival to political chess.

A broken bond, a poisoned bodyguard, and a homeland that refuses to stay dead pull them into a conflict with monarchs and rebels alike.
- Wren must recreate a cure for a magic-suppressing poison used by the People’s Vanguard.
- Torj secretly severed their soul bond to save Wren’s life, but the bond is repairing itself.
- Wren discovers her ruined homeland, Delmira, has transformed into a fertile, coveted paradise.
- Lord Lucian Devereux blackmails Wren: marry his son or Torj dies from a slow-release poison.
- The book ends with a fake engagement and Torj swearing eternal service to Wren as queen.
The story balances a second-chance romance with a race to secure a reborn kingdom. Expect political maneuvering, class warfare, and a cliffhanger that resets the board for the final book.

Thorns & Fire Summary: The Full Story
SPOILER WARNING: This section recounts major plot events, including the ending.
The narrative opens in Tver, where Torj Elderbrock and Wilder Hawthorne track the People’s Vanguard to rescue Queen Reyna of Aveum. In an underground temple, they defeat a large rebel force.
Torj interrogates a captain using Wren’s truth serum and learns Reyna is held at a shipping yard.
During the rescue, the masked rebel leader Lord Silas escapes after throwing a box of exploding darts. Torj shields the queen and receives small pinpricks on his back.
The queen, drugged and delirious, repeats a prophecy: “Gold will turn to silver in a blaze of iron and embers, giving rise to ancient power long forgotten.”
At Drevenor Academy, Wren Embervale struggles to recreate the counter-alchemy cure for her graduation opus. Her mentor, Farissa Tremaine, helps her realize the key ingredient is a wild silvertide rose from Delmira. Cultivated roses do not work. Wren must return to her ruined homeland.
She leaves with Thea, Kipp, and Dessa. In Harenth, they are followed by a poor commoner named Paden. Wren shows him mercy, giving him coins and medicine for his sick daughter. Audra sends Torj to rejoin Wren as her protector, while Thea goes to escort Queen Reyna.
Torj and Wren’s reunion is painful. Weeks earlier, Torj broke off their relationship without explanation. In truth, their soul bond forced Wren to absorb his physical pain during an attack, nearly killing her.
To protect her, Torj severed the bond. He keeps this secret, leaving Wren to believe he abandoned her.
Traveling north, they see commoners hanged by the Vanguard. They scout the fortified settlement of Elmridge, where a rebel leader rallies the poor against magic users and Warswords.
Trapped by a mob, Torj breaks through a stone wall with his bare fists, burning his back. Wren treats his wounds, deepening their emotional conflict.
During a storm, they share a tent and wake up tangled together, but Torj restrains himself.
Delmira is not a wasteland. Wren and Dessa find lush grass, wildflowers, and a sapphire lake. They harvest silvertide roses. Torj warns that a fertile Delmira will attract power-hungry monarchs. The discovery must stay secret until Audra is informed.
Audra and Farissa task Wren and Torj with investigating a traitor at Drevenor. They attend Lord Hullet’s ball in Harenth, posing as a married couple, “Lord and Lady Hargrave.” Torj’s childhood rival, Darian Devereux, kisses Wren’s hand. Torj tackles him in jealousy.
They find Drevenor-stamped royal lineage records in Hullet’s study, confirming the leak.
Back at Drevenor, Prince Zavier Terling returns, obsessed with human transmutation to resurrect his mother. The chronicler Magnus Crane triggers Wren’s trauma about her dead friends Sam and Ida.
Her storm magic flares, and she faints. Torj removes glass shards from her stomach. They kiss, and Torj sees a glimmer of the gold soul bond thread returning.
Wren reads about magical bonds and learns that the bond repairs itself if love remains. She confronts Torj. He confesses he severed the bond because his pain was killing her. Angry but loving, they make love and restore the bond fully.
King Leiko of Tver captures Dessa. Wren confesses publicly that Delmira is reborn and that her storm magic is key. Leiko threatens invasion.
Wren summons her sister Thea, declaring Delmira needs a queen. Torj and Wilder raid an illegal Vanguard laboratory. Silas is fusing shadow magic remains with alchemy to strip magic.
They are trapped by toxic gas. Wren and Thea track them through the soul bond and rescue them. Wren presents her completed cure and heals Queen Reyna.
Kipp advises that Wren must claim the throne. A marriage alliance with Zavier is suggested.
Lord Lucian Devereux corners Wren.
Torj was poisoned by the darts at the shipping yard. He has months to live. Lucian has the antidote and demands Wren marry his son Darian. To save Torj, Wren agrees.
She publicly breaks off her relationship with Torj and announces her engagement to Darian. At dusk, she meets Torj in the gardens and reveals the blackmail.
Torj kneels, lays down his war hammer, and declares his eternal service to her as his queen.
The golden bond shines between them as the book ends.
