Heart of the Wolf Queen Summary

Spoilers ahead. The following recounts the plot from beginning to end, including the ending.

Part I: The Tribute Tower

Sorrow Villente makes her third attempt to escape the Tribute Tower, where King Romero IV has held her for years. She tries to pick the exit lock but is caught by royal guards.

Romero arrives with news that changes everything. Sorrow will not be sacrificed to the god Vyrus after all. He has sold her in marriage to King Matthias Elmswood of Asmar.

Sorrow believes Matthias abandoned her eight years earlier, after the riding accident that damaged her sight. She also believes he married her half-sister, Princess Enfys Thorne.

Part II: The Road to Asmar

The royal carriage is ambushed by a boar-like diafol. Sorrow secretly draws on forbidden magic to panic the horses and slips into the forest with Pablo.

Hunters aim arrows at the wolf, and Sorrow shields him with her body. The lead hunter reveals himself as Matthias Elmswood.

Matthias corrects her: he never planned to marry Enfys. He bargained for Sorrow’s hand by offering Romero a seat on Asmar’s governing council.

With Captain Asher Rossing, they stop at a village chapel for an expedited wedding. Moments after the register is signed, a lethal rogue fog engulfs the village.

Sorrow walks into the toxic mist to free Pablo, who was chained outside. She emerges unharmed, and Matthias realizes she never lost her magic.

Matthias’s twin brother, Prince Ifan, then arrives with news that the Empress of Carush has been sighted off the coast.

Part III: The Alliance Summit

Sorrow persuades Matthias to attend The Alliance Summit in Ostos rather than return home. There, Romero urges the monarchs to dissolve The Alliance and unite under his rule.

Sorrow intervenes using years of library research. She convinces Queen Amala of Ostos, Queen Sarus of Motresh, and King Cai of Trespia that she can locate untapped Vyrium mines to supply their armies.

The vote passes. Shortly afterward, King Seth of Itoras is assassinated on his journey home.

At the Palace of Solace in Asmar, Sorrow meets Princess Skye and the elder Deviant mentor Mrs. Glesni Grace. Glesni warns that Sorrow’s headaches and nosebleeds are early signs of the blight.

Sorrow begins training her primary gift and successfully connects with corvids and small creatures. Meanwhile, Romero’s ambassador Duke Danté Lommond arrives to spy.

Part IV: Dark Secrets and the Vyrium Mine

Masked assassins attack the palace, and Glesni’s wife Keya Grace is killed in the skirmish. At Keya’s funeral pyre, Glesni tells Sorrow the truth about her second gift.

Sorrow is a Deviant with necromancy, the power to raise and control the dead. She suppressed it after accidentally reanimating her mother’s corpse as a child, an incident that harmed Enfys.

Enfys arrives in Asmar with Duke Danté, secretly carrying Sorrow’s original research books while leaving false notes for Romero.

Working with Skye, Sorrow pinpoints a massive untapped Vyrium deposit at Graig Du near Shadow Lake. She and Matthias enter the cavern, confirm the vein, and finally declare their love.

Part V: Betrayal and the Beach

Duke Danté and Drufaeran soldiers ambush them at the cavern exit. Prince Ifan is revealed as a traitor who struck a deal with Romero and Danté.

Ifan shoves Sorrow off a high cliff at Graig Du. She survives with injuries, is cornered by mercenary diafol hunters, and is rescued when Pablo and Matthias find her.

Matthias, Sorrow, Asher, Skye, Enfys, and Glesni make a stand on the coastline near the Tribute Tower. A violent battle erupts on the beach.

Romero personally runs his sword through Glesni. Overcome by grief, Sorrow stops holding back her second gift.

She channels necromancy, drawing on Glesni’s lingering spirit to unleash a blast of fire that incinerates King Romero into ash.

The Ending and Cliffhanger

The Empress of Carush lands her armada on the beach just as Romero dies. She reveals her secret weapon: dark Vyrium control tattoos.

Both Prince Ifan and Matthias bear these tattoos on their backs, placing their minds under the Empress’s absolute command. Matthias is forced to turn against his loved ones.

Asher and Skye drag a heartbroken Sorrow onto a getaway boat with Enfys and Pablo. As the vessel sails, Sorrow looks back at her enchanted husband.

She vows to rebuild The Alliance, break the Empress’s control over Matthias, and reclaim her kingdom.
