The Alchemary Book Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers)

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the entire plot, including the ending and cliffhanger.

Amber Fallbrook wakes in her dormitory at the Alchemary on the first day of her Mastery year. She remembers her childhood in Innswood and basic alchemy from her late mother, but nothing of the past two years. Her childhood friends Wilder and Desmond Gregory visit her. Desmond, a stern Apotheosis researcher, argues she should be expelled as a hazard.

The headmistress, the Bluehelm, allows Amber to stay on probation if her marks remain above 60%. Amber discovers she was the top Transmutation student and had been secretly researching the Philosopher’s Stone. She also keeps a journal written in an unbreakable code.

Classmate Pryce Wishart tries to coerce Amber into romantic favors for tutoring. She resists, and during the confrontation she shatters a 150-year-old stained-glass window. The Bluehelm forces Pryce’s family to pay for repairs and assigns Amber to work in Desmond’s private laboratory.

In the Conservatory, Amber’s bloody finger touches a bone plaque and reveals a hidden sulfur symbol. She realizes the founder Lord Calyx encoded secrets in the architecture. Following a sequence of plaques, she creates a solvent that opens a secret compartment containing a gold ouroboros bracelet and a riddle scroll.

The Black Trial arrives. Students are poisoned with arsenic and must synthesize an antidote. Desmond had underlined key notes in Amber’s satchel. She succeeds, but when classmate Yoslyn collapses, Amber gives her the rest of her antidote. The single dose cures both women and reverses cellular damage, shocking observers.

After the trial, Amber and Desmond have a romantic encounter. Desmond gives her a contraceptive elixir and reveals that before her amnesia, Amber discovered human emotions generate micro-metals in body fluids. She had harvested sweat, tears, and blood from classmates to create her legendary beyn formula.

Amber and Yoslyn solve Calyx’s riddle. On the anniversary of Queen Avalona’s death, moonlight strikes a metal plate on the Conservatory staircase. They dissolve the plate and find a hidden keyhole.

During the White Trial, the cohort enters a glass maze that slowly fills with water. Amber creates a catalyst that coats an air bladder, but when the arena floods, her catalyst renders the entire pool breathable, saving everyone.

Amber, Wilder, and Yoslyn unlock the hidden hatch beneath the staircase. Wilder steps down first and triggers a trap. Two clay jars break, releasing fatal gas. Wilder dies protecting them. Amber collapses but survives due to her altered physiology.

Devastated and expelled for trespassing, Amber reads the final decoded journal entries with Desmond. The truth: before her amnesia, Amber created the Philosopher’s Stone as a gold-flecked silver suspension. She drank it, transmuting her own body into the living Stone. The transformation caused her total amnesia. Her Stone-infused blood was the catalyst that supercharged her Black Trial antidote and made the maze water breathable.

Amber and Desmond return to the subterranean vault to retrieve Calyx’s notes and Wilder’s body. They are confronted by “Cressa Baxter” and two golden reanimated “aurums”—including Wilder. Cressa reveals she is Iris, the original first Bluehelm and Calyx’s protégé from 150 years ago. She drank an imperfect Elixir of Life and has ruled the Alchemary under disguises ever since, creating aurums as a side effect.

Iris holds Wilder in golden suspended animation and forces a bargain: Amber and Desmond must use Calyx’s remaining Elixir and Amber’s blood to synthesize a cure for immortality and reverse the aurum state. Amber agrees to save Wilder and the victims.

The book ends on a cliffhanger.

Desmond rushes in with news that a violent mob of Toolkeepers is storming the island bridge. The mob is led by Amber’s father, Cornelius, who has been infected and transformed into an aurum.

Quotes from The Book

“Mind, Matter, Spirit.”

“It’s like walking around in a room after someone has blown out the candle. I know that if I move about, I’ll find a table or a chair or a desk, because the furnishings are still there, even if I can’t see them.”

“Alchemy seeks to pull that stone uphill. To guide nature away from entropy and toward order. To nudge everything it touches toward a higher state of being.”

“What use have I for rules, when it is results that matter?”

“You are a light shining brightly in the dark and endless cave that the craft of alchemy can so often feel like.”

“Transformation does not come easily, child, and it requires an alchemist willing to destroy base matter in order to create something greater.”

“My sun, never again shall she rise. Beautiful, but frail. Now the moon shines. When the ouroboros bit off its tail.”
