Killian, her betrothed, has fled and is revealed to be the vessel for Alistair Brightbane. He uses Meryn’s magic to broadcast a telepathic message, framing her as a usurper and inciting rebellion among the Bonded.
Meryn addresses the gathered Bonded in the arena to prove her legitimacy. A violent skirmish breaks out, during which the ancient Dire Blade is shattered.
In a moment of uncontrolled fury, Meryn unleashes a new “shadebending” power, accidentally killing a dozen Bonded. This event horrifies her and deepens the political instability.
As Meryn prepares for a hasty coronation, tragedy strikes. Her best friend, Izabel, is killed by poisoned emberwine intended for Meryn.
Meryn’s grief triggers an explosion of shadow magic. She executes the Councilor of Sturmfrost and his family for the plot.
The situation worsens when the entire Phylax pack defects to Killian. The kingdom’s borders are left vulnerable to invasion.
Meryn travels to the war front at Weisenstat. On the battlefield, she and Stark discover a “shadow-spun link” that merges their minds and creates a devastating wave of destruction.
A ceasefire is offered by General Ruby Navarro. Meryn discovers her father, Fredrich, is still alive as a Siphon.
In the Astreonan capital, King Lucien reveals the war is a five-century-long family feud with his brother Alistair. Meryn learns about the “Goddess Tears,” seven powerful opals.
Lucien proposes marriage to unite their nations. Meryn refuses, remaining devoted to Stark despite his belief that he is a monster.
