Introduction
Three months after Roslyn Larsen told her husband she wanted a divorce, she asks him to pretend they are still happily married.

Sunk in Love by Heather McBreen follows the estranged couple as they share a cramped stateroom, smile through family dinners, and try to keep a year of grief and silence from surfacing in front of everyone they love.
Roslyn, a romance novelist, has not written a word since her mother died.
Liam has his own reasons for keeping the peace. What begins as a performance becomes harder to walk away from.

Sunk in Love Summary
Spoiler warning: the section below recounts the story from beginning to end, including the ending.
Roslyn Larsen is a thirty-one-year-old romance novelist living in Seattle. She dropped out of medical school years ago, a choice that left her as the odd one out in a family of doctors. Her mother, Maggie, was the one person who never made her feel like a disappointment.
Nine years before the main story, Roslyn meets Liam at a dive bar on a double date. He is a British medical student finishing his rotations, earnest and steady where she is guarded.
Her fear of commitment comes from watching her mother cycle through chaotic relationships.
Liam wears her down with patience rather than pressure. They move in together while he completes his residency and a master’s in clinical research, and two years into dating he proposes spontaneously in her grandparents’ kitchen.
The early years of the marriage are passionate and supportive. Underneath, Liam carries trauma from an abusive childhood in England and from watching his mother, Dianne, endure it. When conflict arises, he shuts down and buries himself in work.
When Maggie dies in a car accident a year before the cruise, Roslyn is consumed by grief and stops writing entirely. Liam, unable to sit with her pain, retreats further into his job. Three months before the trip, Roslyn tells him the marriage is over, and he packs a bag and leaves without arguing.
Then Grammy and Gramps announce a ten-day Hawaiian cruise to renew their vows, and they specifically ask Liam to officiate. Roslyn meets him at a Seattle coffee shop and proposes they pretend to still be married for the duration of the trip. He agrees.
Aboard the ship, the small stateroom and shared family schedule erode their distance. A tumble on the plane and a muddy fall during a Maui jungle hike reopen physical awareness between them. Liam admits he applied for a research fellowship in London because staying in Seattle without her was unbearable.
Roslyn tells him how abandoned she felt after her mother died. Divorce papers accidentally end up in her sister Bella’s stateroom, and after that the boundary between performance and reality collapses. They begin meeting secretly around the ship while keeping up the act in front of her family.
During a beach day on Maui, Roslyn breaks down over the complicated memory of her mother, and Liam stays with her. The moment reopens something in her, and she starts writing her new novel.
On Day 8, Liam officiates the vow renewal on the back deck. He speaks about Maggie’s hundred-year-old silver bracelet and about love as continuous effort rather than a single fall. Afterward, Roslyn confronts him about why he never fought for the marriage.
What follows is a tearful confession on both sides. Liam says that watching her grieve made him feel as helpless as he did as a child watching his mother suffer, and he convinced himself she was better off without him. Roslyn tells him she never wanted space or a divorce, only for him to fight.
They reconcile that night. The next morning, Liam gets word that Dianne has finally left his abusive father and is in a hospital in England, and he must fly to London immediately.
He asks Roslyn to come with him and to abandon the divorce entirely. Frightened by the speed of it and wary of repeating old patterns, she hesitates and says they need to be careful. Hurt, Liam leaves for the airport alone.
Roslyn then comes clean to her family about the fake marriage and the divorce. Instead of judgment, her siblings Jonah and Bella offer support and reveal struggles of their own. She realizes that choosing love requires risk, and she leaves the ship in a swimsuit cover-up and flip-flops, taking an Uber to the Honolulu airport.
She catches Liam at his departure gate and tells him she wants to fight for the marriage, mess included, and go to London with him. He embraces her, and they agree to rebuild without secrets.
Two months later, at Christmas in Seattle, they are living together again. Dianne and Liam’s sister Felicity have relocated to Seattle and are celebrating with the Larsen family.
Liam proposes a second time in front of their families with a new ring.

Quotes from Sunk in Love
“Heartbreak wasn’t the worst thing that could happen to a person because it meant you’d been hopeful, and being hopeful is the bravest thing we can be.”
“Forever isn’t long enough when it’s with someone you love”
“Sure, heartbreak is awful, but isn’t the risk what makes it meaningful? The possibility that it doesn’t work, but you want it badly enough to find out?”
“I want you to know that just because we’re ending things doesn’t mean I don’t still care about you.”
“Relationships are like the bracelet… when you work hard and take care of them, they’ll last. The easiest part of loving someone is the falling, and everything after that takes hard work.”
“I want our story just the way it is. I want this life we’ve built and torn down and will build again. I want the good and the bad… No editing.”
“You’re my home. Wherever you are is where I want to be.”
