All the Little Houses Summary: Suburbia’s Darkest Secrets
All the Little Houses Summary: A Steamy Southern Noir of Secrets
A rustic family of homesteaders moves onto a farm outside Longview, East Texas, during a scorching summer in the late 1980s.
Their arrival draws the attention of the town’s oil-rich elite, who are curious about the newcomers’ handmade furniture, herbal remedies, and Bible-quoting ways.
All the Little Houses by May Cobb follows the collision between the Swift family and the wealthy Andersens across country clubs, dive bars, and a secluded teen hangout in the woods.
Affairs, bribes, and old resentments build quietly beneath the surface.
The novel is a domestic thriller told through four alternating points of view, and it leans on secrets rather than shock value to keep the tension rising.

All the Little Houses Summary: The Full Story
Spoilers ahead.
Seventeen-year-old Jane Swift and her family move from Dallas to a farm on Seven Pines Road in Longview, East Texas.
The household includes her father Ethan, a furniture maker, her mother Abigail, an herbalist, her older sister Julia, and her baby sister Molly.
Jane’s confidence and beauty win over the local teens at Miller’s Swimming Hole. This enrages Nellie Andersen, the insecure daughter of socialite Charleigh Andersen and oil heir Alexander Andersen.
Nellie crowds Jane off the highway with her red BMW while Jane is riding her horse, Cookie. The horse spooks, and Jane badly injures her leg against a fence.
Among the adults, Charleigh visits the Swift farm and is repulsed by Abigail’s homesteading manner. She is also drawn to Ethan’s rugged appeal.
Jackson Ford, Charleigh’s gay interior designer friend, meets Ethan at Sullivan’s dive bar. The two share a charged encounter in Ethan’s workshop.
Both Swift parents carry secrets. Ethan is actually a serial thief and con man who seduces wealthy clients, robs them, and blackmails them.
Abigail hosts fertility workshops for local wives while carrying on an affair with Alexander Andersen.

At the Andersens’ Fourth of July party, Nellie discovers her father having sex with Abigail in the garage. She flees into the woods.
There, Nellie finds Luke with Blair Chambers, whose shirt is turned inside out. That same night, Jackson confesses his feelings to Ethan in the woods.

Ethan turns violent, shoves Jackson into a creek, and threatens to kill him if he ever exposes their history or Ethan’s real identity.
The next day at Miller’s Swimming Hole, Blair climbs the boathouse roof for her signature dive. An unmoored metal canoe floats beneath her, and she strikes her head on the iron tip.
Blair is rushed to the hospital in a coma. When she briefly regains consciousness, she points to the letter “J” on an alphabet board.
The town assumes the letter refers to Jane or Nellie. Jane later finds a blue snorkel mask in her barn and realizes her sister Julia unmoored the canoe out of jealousy.
Abigail slaps Jane during an argument and reveals that Jane is not her biological daughter. Ethan admits that Jane’s real mother, Marissa, died in a fatal accident involving Abigail years earlier.
Jackson returns from Dallas with confirmation that Ethan is a con artist. He tells Charleigh that Ethan is a swindler and that Alexander has been sleeping with Abigail.
Charleigh refuses to accept it and lashes out at Jackson. He severs their friendship and walks away.
Teens hold a candlelight vigil for Blair at The Circles. Jane confronts Nellie and reveals that Charleigh paid Luke $5,000 to take her on their date.
Humiliated, Nellie drives to the Boat House and confronts her mother in the nearby woods. Charleigh admits the bribe, mocks her, and slaps her.
Nellie tackles Charleigh to the ground and strangles her to death. She drags the body into the lake, but it fails to sink.
Spotting Luke nearby, Nellie begs him to help move the body. As he wades toward the corpse, she runs to a payphone and calls 911.
She reports that a man is murdering a woman at the Boat House. Three patrol cars surround the lake, and police arrest Luke as he stands in the water beside Charleigh’s body.
Nellie watches from the shadows. She resolves that if Luke clears his name, she will frame her father, Alexander, for the murder next.
